The Chicago Cubs have some exciting young talent throughout their pipeline to help supplement the veteran players on the roster. The goal is to have quality prospects that either can elevate to the majors or be used in trades. The Cubs have some young prospects who can be impactful for the 2026 season. Let’s take a look at who one outlet considers to be the organization’s top prospect heading into the 2026 season.
Bleacher Report considers designated hitter Moises Ballesteros the Chicago Cubs’ top prospect

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter curated a list of the top 100 prospects heading into the 2026 season. Every outlet seemingly has its own prospect rankings, but Reuter tells us the criteria for his prospect rankings and what he looks for. With the rankings he factors in three things: future potential, present tools, and eligibility. The Cubs have two names on this top 100 list, but we’re focused on the top player. At the 34th spot, Chicago’s designated hitter Moises Ballesteros is on the list as the team’s top prospect. Below is a snippet where Reuter mentions Ballesteros:
“Moises Ballesteros has a clear path to the regular DH job for the Cubs this year, and he earned it by hitting .333/.435/.564 with four extra-base hits in 14 games as a September call-up. He profiles as an offense-only version of Alejandro Kirk, with a bit more playable power.”
Ballesteros has already been informed he will begin the season in the majors, likely as an everyday designated hitter. This is the highest propsect ranking he finds himself on as below are his rankings from other websites:
- Baseball America: 36
- MLB: 55
- Baseball Prospectus: 80
Balllesteros had an excellent Spring Training as he finished 11 of 33 with a .965 OPS, two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs scored. He will be one of three left-handed hitters in the projected lineup, so he creates balance as well. It will be interesting to see how Ballesteros is able to handle MLB pitching on an everyday basis.
