Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton looked distraught Friday afternoon in Cleveland when he walked off the field in the second inning of his start against the Guardians, suffering from what was described as \u201cforearm discomfort.\u201d Moments earlier, he had indicated to the dugout that things didn\u2019t feel right, physically.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to be smart about it,\u201d Horton said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve been in this spot before and I\u2019ve taken the other route where I keep going, and it ends up being worse. So, I just tried to make a mature decision and end it there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old was expected to do big things this year after a breakthrough rookie season in 2025 that saw him perform as, arguably, the best pitcher in all of baseball after the All-Star break.<\/p>\n

Manager Craig Counsell told media after the game that Horton to will get imaging to see the extent of the injury and will also be placed on the 15-day IL as he\u2019s being assessed.<\/p>\n

Who could take Horton\u2019s spot?<\/h2>\n

Now, however, the talk must turn to the future. Specifically, how to fill the young arm\u2019s spot in a Cubs rotation that needs the kind of impact starter Horton was expected to be.<\/p>\n

Veteran Colin Rea was brought in to replace Horton on Friday and it\u2019s thought that he\u2019ll likely be the full-time replacement until the team knows what\u2019s in their injured pitcher\u2019s immediate future. Last season, Rea was solid as the team\u2019s full-time rotation fill-in, posting a 10-7 record with a 4.33 ERA in 27 starts.<\/p>\n

Chicago also has Ben Brown and Javier Assad as possible rotation fill-ins.<\/p>\n

Then, of course, ace Justin Steele is slated to return some time before mid-season.<\/p>\n

But if Horton is lost for any extended period of time, the Cubs may have no choice but to reach out and try to pick up somebody outside of the organization.<\/p>\n

Some people already have an idea of who that outside pickup should be\u2014Lucas Giolito.<\/p>\n

Lucas Giolito to the rescue?<\/h2>\n

In the Friday night edition of MLB Tonight<\/a>, the host brought up that exact possibility:<\/p>\n

\u201cI keep reminding myself that Lucas Giolito is still sitting out there without a team,\u201d he said, following the segment talking about Horton\u2019s injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe might be a Cub,\u201d replied analyst Harold Reynolds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jacob Zanolla of Bleacher Nation<\/a> also brought up the Giolito possibility:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cubs could look to someone outside of the organization, and there does happen to be one (relatively) legitimate arm still available: Lucas Giolito.<\/p>\n

Giolito, 31, made 25 starts for the Red Sox last season, pitching to a 3.41 ERA over 145.0 IP. But while that seems encouraging, a quick peek under the hood reveals the more troubling peripherals that are probably conspiring to keep him a free agent this long: 5.01 xERA, 4.17 FIP. But in terms of emergency fill-in options, you could do a whole lot worse than Giolito.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last season with the Red Sox, the 31-year-old Giolito had a good year, stats-wise. But, as Zanolla mentions, maybe the raw numbers don\u2019t tell the full story of what\u2019s under the 9-year veteran\u2019s hood. There has to be a reason, after all, why he\u2019s still unsigned when starting pitching is such an MLB-wide priority.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen whether he\u2019d even be much of an upgrade over the pitchers the Cubs already have lined up as fill-ins.<\/p>\n

But he\u2019s somebody definitely worth looking into for a Cubs rotation already showcasing some weakness just days into the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
