The Chicago Blackhawks continued to build momentum in the early stages of the 2025–26 NHL season with a convincing 7–3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at the United Center. Led by Connor Bedard’s first career NHL hat trick, Chicago showcased the chemistry of its young core and reminded fans that the rebuilding phase might finally be nearing its end.

With the win, the Blackhawks improved to 5-3-2 on the season and climbed to eighth place in the Western Conference. The victory also marked their third win in the past four games, a clear sign that the team is beginning to find consistency.

Connor Bedard has been at the center of the Blackhawks’ resurgence since the season began, and Tuesday night was another shining example of why he’s considered one of the NHL’s brightest young stars. The 20-year-old forward recorded his first career NHL hat trick in front of a roaring home crowd, pushing Chicago to victory after a tense middle frame.

Chicago jumped out to a 4–0 lead early in the second period, but the Senators clawed back with three unanswered goals to make it a one-goal game. Just when it seemed like momentum was shifting toward Ottawa, Bedard stepped up once again. Early in the third period, he found the back of the net for the third time of the night, restoring Chicago’s two-goal cushion and sealing the game’s turning point.

The hat trick came in Bedard’s 160th career NHL game, marking not only a personal milestone but also a historic moment in Blackhawks history. He became just the seventh player in franchise history to score 50 goals before turning 21, joining an elite list of names that includes legends like Patrick Kane and Jeremy Roenick.

Following the game, Bedard reflected on the emotional moment and the fan support that made it even more special.
“I think our whole team celebrates each other in moments like that,” Bedard said. “And then, kind of the fans’ reaction was awesome. We have so much support. Obviously, you want to get a hatty anywhere, but to get one at home is nice. That support is unbelievable.”

The home crowd showered the ice with hats after his third goal, which was a memorable moment for both Bedard and Blackhawks fans, who have waited for glimpses of their team’s future to shine this brightly.

Young core driving Chicago Blackhawks’ rebuild

It’s not just Connor Bedard making noise in Chicago. The Blackhawks’ youthful core is finally starting to gel, giving the franchise hope for a new era of success. Frank Nazar, another rising forward, has developed strong on-ice chemistry with Bedard, and the duo has been electric through the first 10 games of the season, combining for 23 points.

Head coach Jeff Blashill has emphasized patience and development throughout the rebuilding process, and it’s paying off. The team’s offensive production is becoming more balanced, and their ability to recover from defensive lapses — such as Ottawa’s three-goal surge in the second period, shows maturity beyond their years.

Bedard acknowledged that the ups and downs are part of the journey for both him and the team. “Look at (the game against) Anaheim, I don’t know how many shots I had, probably 10 or something, none goes in,” Bedard said. “Tonight, it’s every one. That’s how hockey is. Sometimes it’s going in, sometimes it’s not. I think for me kind of trying (to) stick with it, keep shooting, not get too high, not get too low. That’s our whole group. It’s nice to see them go in for sure, but you’re going to have ups and downs.”

That mindset, staying even-keeled through the highs and lows, is what separates great players from good ones. Bedard’s growth in both his skill and mentality is becoming increasingly evident, and his leadership is rubbing off on the rest of the young Blackhawks roster.

Looking ahead and building on the momentum

After their impressive win, the Chicago Blackhawks now embark on a challenging six-game road trip beginning Thursday in Winnipeg against the Jets. The trip will be an important test of their early-season chemistry and resilience.

With Bedard leading the offense and young players like Nazar stepping up, the Blackhawks are beginning to look like a team capable of competing every night. Their rebuilding journey is far from over, but the signs of progress are undeniable.

As the 2025–26 season continues, one thing is clear, Connor Bedard is not only the face of the franchise but also the spark driving Chicago’s return to relevance. His hat trick against Ottawa wasn’t just a personal achievement, it was a glimpse into a promising future for the Blackhawks and their fans.
