There are two things that every NFL general manager needs to get right before all else: head coach and quarterback. It certainly seems now, after years of rebuilding, that Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has done just that. He, of course, found the Bears franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams. Last year, he brought in the coveted Ben Johnson, who helped turn the team around in a short while.
After finishing 11-6 in 2025 and winning the NFC North, the future certainly looks bright in Chicago for the first time in a long time. But bright futures come at a cost, and a time is coming when the Bears will need to pay Williams his due.
Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles is preparing to pay Caleb Williams on a contract extension

Williams, who has completed two seasons as the Bears starting quarterback, is well on his way to being the best player at his position in franchise history.
And even though he will not hit free agency any time soon, Poles is getting ready to make his star quarterback a very lucrative offer:
“I hope eventually to have a quarterback situation, too, where we’ve got to pay a young quarterback. We’re getting closer and closer to clarity on that side of things.
“I want to be clear: Anyone that’s watched the league long enough knows that for quarterback play, it’s consistency. Can you stack years on top of each other? We still have steps to go. I don’t want to make it like he’s already [there]. He knows he’s got work to do.
“But if all of that falls into place, we have to understand how that changes our formula as we move forward. That’s a great thing to be on that path. I feel like we have a long-term quarterback solution. It makes me excited.”
This extension, as exciting as an idea that it may be, is not going to come for a few more years. Williams will play the next two seasons as the last standard years on his rookie contract, and then the Bears will have him play on his fifth-year option.
That is, if he continues to play well and improve from year to year.
Once that happens, the fifth-year option, then Poles will give Williams the lucrative contract extension that he referenced above.
