The Chicago Bears are losing some key leaders from the team that won the NFC North in 2025.

Center Drew Dalman’s retirement came as a surprise. Dalman and wide receiver DJ Moore are two big losses on the offensive side of the ball.
The Bears lost four safeties and cornerback Nashon Wright on the defensive side of the ball, in addition to linebacker Temaine Edmunds. Kevin Byard III was a team captain in 2024 and 2025, and he left to sign with the New England Patriots after earning All-Pro honors last season.
During an interview with NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Byard opened up Wednesday on what he thinks of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. Byard thinks he’s the most talented quarterback he’s played with.
“I’ve been around some really good quarterbacks, and he’s the most talented quarterback I’ve ever played with,” Byard said, via a transcription by Sports Illustrated. “He’s probably the most talented quarterback I’ve seen with my own eyes as far as the arm talent. The escapability outside the pocket.
“When he moves on the run, he’s more accurate than he is when he isn’t (moving). I expect him to be one of the top two or three quarterbacks in the league for a long time. I think he’s got some Super Bowls in his sights, as well.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Byard thinks of Williams when he plays with Drake Maye next season. Maye finished second in the NFL MVP race last season, but struggled in the AFC championship and Super Bowl.
Williams showed tremendous growth during the second half of last season, and was a force for Chicago in the playoffs. The Bears appear to be making his growth in Year 3 a priority based on the offseason moves they’ve made so far.
It’s a shame the Bears couldn’t bring Byard back for the 2026 campaign, when the team is expected to compete for a Super Bowl.
