The Chicago Bears won another thrilling last-minute contest on Sunday, as they score 14 points in the final four minutes of the game to beat the New York Giants by a score of 24-20. Chicago’s offense was led by quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw for a touchdown and ran for the game-winning score with less than two minutes left. The victory marks the fourth time this year, and the fifth time in Williams’ last ten games he has led the Bears’ offense on a game-winning drive, confirming that the second-year star has become a very unique type of signal-caller.

Caleb Williams has become a win because of quarterback in the NFL

Since the final week of the 2024 season, five of Chicago’s seven wins have come due in part to Caleb Williams engineering a game-winning touchdown or field goal drive, scoring on his offense’s final possession in the games. Williams has led the Bears’ offense to scoring drives against the Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, Cincinnati Bengals, and now the New York Giants. Even more impressive about leading the comeback wins, is that Sunday’s comeback victory over the giants was the first time Chicago’s second-year signal-caller had recorded a come-from-behind win at home via offensive scores.

In his short year and a half career, Caleb Williams has begun to establish that he is the type of quarterback that a team wins because and that if a contest is close at the end, a team has high probability to pull out a victory. Very few NFL teams are fortunate to have a starting quarterback who allows his team to have a chance to win a game if it is within a certain number of points. The come from behind win over the Giants also marked the first time Williams led the Bears on a comeback from two score in the fourth quarter.

Throughout the 2025 season, Williams has led a different type of game-winning drive in the four games that Chicago has won in the final minute of the game. Against the Raiders in Week 4, the Bears’ quarterback dissected the opposing offense with several mid-level throws mixed with a few rushing plays, culminating with a D’Andre Swift three-yard touchdown run. One week later, Williams set up kicker Jake Moody’s game-winning field goal as time expired, by relying heavily on Chicago’s rushing offense, and wisely not audibling to a pass play or changing the specific run design pre-snap.

Caleb Williams' utilized his mobility to help lead Chicago to 14 points in their final two offensive possessions.

The last two weeks have seen Williams respond to immense adversity created and brought on by the Bears’ themselves, as the defense struggled in the team’s last two games. Against the Bengals, Chicago’s quarterback responded with a 58-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Colston Loveland with less than 30 seconds left in the game, right after their defense had blown a 14-point lead within one minute’s time.  Against the Giants, outside of Caleb Williams, the Bears’ passing offense struggled as the team’s pass-catchers recorded six dropped passes, resulting in the ten points through most of the game.

With the struggles of the pass-catchers, Williams leading the offense to back-to-back touchdown drives was even more impressive given the poor weather conditions. The cold, windy, and wet conditions played a role in the dropped passes, yet Caleb Williams managed to utilize his mobility to free up the most sure-handed receivers like Luther Burden or deciding to gain yards by scrambling. On the two offensive scoring drive, Chicago’s quarterback scrambled for a 29-yard gain and a 17-yard touchdown run to win the game, as he realized that his mobility would be the most reliable way to score, especially with the conditions that had hampered the offense earlier.

Caleb Williams’ clutch aura could have a huge mental benefit moving forward

Caleb Williams’ ability to demonstrate grace and collectiveness in adverse situations, especially when Chicago is in need of a game-winning drive, changes a multitude of aspects moving forward. Williams being reliable and capable of leading a game-winning drive regardless of the situation, provides an immense confidence boost to not just the offense, but to the defense too. A key example is Sunday’s contest against the Giants, as right after the offense scored to make the game 20-17, the Bears’ defense forced a three-and-out against New York’s offense, which included two sacks.

If the Bears’ team as a whole is provided confidence and hope that their second-year quarterback is always able to give them a chance to win a game, especially if it is close at the end, the confidence boost for everyone is significantly valuable. Williams being able to be that reliable takes pressure off of his fellow pass-catchers ensuring them that they could be difference makers without the focus solely being on them. Additionally, the defense will be motivated to play harder and more focused, as they know their effort won’t go unappreciated by Caleb Williams.

Caleb Williams' ability to lead game-winning drives could cause mental gaffes for opposing defenders.

On the flipside, Caleb Williams ability to execute game-winning drives with confidence and ease could have a massive negative effect on opposing teams. Williams being able to score on Chicago’s offensive possession might cause opposing offenses to make mistakes feeling the need to throw the ball and score points instead of looking control the ball and clock by running the ball. Furthermore, opposing defenses could play scared with individual defenders making mental mistakes due to the sheer presence of the Bears’ quarterback and the potential of the signal-caller to take advantage of any mistakes made by the defense.

Williams’ comeback capabilities are what the Bears’ franchise and fanbase has yearned for decades, as they finally have a quarterback that can win in any situation, but more importantly always gives the team a chance to win. On multiple occasions in just his second season in the NFL, Caleb Williams has led multiple game-winning drives in a variety of different ways. If Chicago’s signal-caller keeps up this level of play, especially in crucial moments at the end of games, there will be a growing call for Most Valuable Player considerations.
