The Notre Dame Fighting Irish may have missed the postseason, but they are still making headlines. At the beginning of the NCAA Tournament, one of their former players has made a career change. Instead of playing men’s basketball, they are looking at the gridiron to be part of the NFL. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what we know about this signing.
The Indianapolis Colts signed Carson Towt to become a tight end

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Indianapolis Colts are signing Notre Dame forward Carson Towt. Their thought process is to transition him to a tight end for their team. This is a bit of a rarity as Towt has no prior football experience in high school or college, but the Colts have done this before. One of their other tight ends, Mo Alie-Cox, had no experience after playing at VCU before signing with the team.
Towt played for the Fighting Irish men’s basketball team in the 2025 season while averaging 5.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Prior to that, he spent four years at Northern Arizona. Towt is listed at 6-foot-8, 250 pounds, so he certainly has the size to play in the NFL. This is something that will be intriguing as an undrafted free agent from last year’s class is now going to be with the Colts.
This signing does not guarantee that Towt will make the roster or even be part of the practice squad. However, this is a low-risk signing for Indy that signed a player with some name recognition from South Bend. It will be interesting to see how he does and if he will ever suit up for the Colts.
