The Chicago Bears are looking to find ways of improving their 53-man roster during the free agency period. While not all improvements are created equal, getting a veteran to join the team will add leadership and experience to the team. Let’s take a look at who the Bears have signed and what it means for the rest of the team going forward.
The Chicago Bears have signed veteran QB Case Keenum in free agency

The Bears have made a move to add some experience to the quarterback room as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the team has signed free agent quarterback Case Keenum to a two-year, $5.5 million contract. This deal has the chance to maximize to $8 million during the life of the contract. Keenum has been a veteran quarterback that has lived as a backup and in a mentorship role for teams since his starting days are behind him.
Throughout his career, he has played in 80 games for the Houston Texans, St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and Buffalo Bills. Keenum has completed 62.3% of his passes for 15,175 yards with 79 passing touchdowns to 51 interceptions.
With rumors surrounding teams being interested in backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, this gives the Bears someone who already understands the Ben Johnson playbook and allows them to shop Bagent if they choose to. Does this move immediately make Chicago a better team? No. However, Keenum has seen a lot of things throughout his NFL career that can help Caleb Williams mature in his third season.
This contract can allow Keenum to become the quarterback as the backup and make sure things do not go haywire if Williams goes down with an injury. It will be intriguing to see how this move factors into what Chicago does for the remainder of the free agency period after the team has already made a few signings.
