According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Bears will not receive the two third-round compensatory draft picks that are given from the NFL.

This is reportedly because the NFL league office does not consider the Falcons GM job a “primary football executive job” according to Jones.

Jones states that the NFL considers the Falcons GM job a “secondary position” due to Cunningham reporting directly to Ryan, the head of football operations.

“The general manager role in Atlanta is like most other GM gigs across the league with one exception: this job is not what the league office considers the “primary football executive” position. Cunningham is considered a secondary football executive who reports to Ryan, the PFE as designated by the team and league office.”

It was also reported by Jones that the Bears front office knew they would not receive these draft picks for a while, but allowed Cunningham to still interview for the job.

For the past few years, the NFL has given teams compensatory draft picks if a minority front office member or coach took roles at general manager or as a head coach.

Unfortunately for the Bears, they have somehow managed to lose out on two draft picks thanks to the NFL.

It seemed that the Chicago Bears finally solved their issue at left tackle with 2025 rookie Ozzy Trapilo. After replacing Theo Benedet during the middle of the 2025 season, Trapilo held his own and did an excellent job in both pass protection and run blocking.

Trapilo was an unsung hero for the Bears during their incredible 2025 season. Unfortunately during the final drive of the wildcard game against the Packers, Trapilo suffered a severe injury. The Bears’ left tackle tore his patellar tendon in the final minutes of the team’s first playoff game since 2020.

Trapilo was then placed on injured reserve and did not play in last week’s heartbreaking loss against the Los Angeles Rams.

Unfortunately, it seems that Trapilo will not be back on the field for a long time.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles was asked about Trapilo’s injury timetable during Wednesday’s end of season press conference.

According to Jason Lieser, the Bears’ GM has no specific timetable for when Trapilo could return. Poles said he believes that it would be deep into the 2026 season.

It looks like Trapilo will miss majority of the 2026 season. Patellar tendon injuries take longer than a lot of injuries to recover, and this is such a brutal blow to a Bears offensive line that has exceeded so many expectations.

What could the Bears do at left tackle for the 2026 season?

Poles and head coach Ben Johnson will now have to come up with a decision for left tackle in 2026.

The most logical route is by signing a solid veteran player that can hold his own during the 2026 season until Trapilo is ready to go.

The team could also give Theo Benedet and Braxton Jones another shot to start, however both lost out on starting during the 2025 season. Jones initially was the week 1 starter at left tackle, but struggled badly. Benedet then came in and played somewhat better. However Benedet was not good enough at pass protection.

The team could also move Joe Thuney to left tackle moving forward and give Jonah McFadden a shot to start at left guard. Thuney moved from left guard to tackle during the divisional loss to fill in for Trapilo. McFadden did an impressive job for his first start at left guard.

While Thuney played well at tackle, he’s arguably the best guard in the entire NFL and plays at a much higher level when at guard.

The Bears will likely come up with a game plan for left tackle once free agency opens up in March.

This was without a doubt, one of if not the greatest throw I have ever seen in my entire life. Only a select few quarterbacks could make a throw like that. The throw was so good that Pro Football Focus has given the Bears’ QB a top grade for it.

The fourth down conversion was the highest graded play by any quarterback from the entire first round of the playoffs. To top it off, PFF gave Williams seven “big time throws” which is the third most in a playoff game since they started grading quarterbacks.

Regarding the offense, quarterback Caleb Williams is going to have to overcome some major adversity. The team will be without top receivers Rome Odunze and Luther Burden.

This leaves DJ Moore as the Bears’ only primary receiver. Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay will likely see the field often and must step up in a huge way. However, the team still has a powerhouse of a running back room and two very good tight ends that can make plays.

The Bears’ offense must get Swift and Monangai going early. A Packers defense without Micah Parsons should be a major advantage. If Ben Johnson can feed his running backs, it’ll open up the play action game and could make the quarterback’s life much easier.

For the passing game, Colston Loveland has to get the ball. Loveland has solidified himself as a top target for Caleb Williams and has proven he can be a force in the offense. DJ Moore also needs to have a game like he did against Cleveland last week.

With how loaded the NFC is, the Bears need to take care of business. The Bears still have three more very tough opponents to close out the season as well. They will get a shot at revenge against Green Bay next week, then a primetime showdown against the 9-4 San Francisco 49ers, and will close it out in an anticipated rematch with the Detroit Lions.

That being said, Cleveland will still be a challenge. Their defense led by Myles Garrett is among one of the better defenses in the NFL. With the cold weather coming, it could be a very tough game.

With the additions of Jackson, Joe Thuney, and Drew Dalman, the Bears’ offensive line has seen one of the most remarkable turnarounds I’ve ever seen. All three offseason additions along with Wright are having Pro Bowl caliber seasons.

The Bears have also seemed to resolve the issue at left tackle. Rookie Ozzy Trapilo made his first start against Pittsburgh two weeks ago and has thrived in the role since. Trapilo has held his own against two very good defenses and has played better than both Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet.

Nashon Wright continues to be a hero on the defense

Defensive back Nashon Wright has done a phenomenal job holding his own while filling in for an injured Jaylon Johnson. The veteran defensive back currently has the second most interceptions in the NFL, behind teammate Kevin Byard.

Wright was given major praise from head coach Ben Johnson prior to Friday’s game, and rightfully so.

The defensive back made arguably the most important play of the entire game. In a crucial third and short play during the late third quarter, the Bears were able to stop Philadelphia on the infamous “tush push”.

One of the biggest reasons Johnson came to Chicago was the playmakers that were already on the team. This includes Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze, who were drafted the season prior. Under Ben Johnson, the Bears’ first-round picks from 2024 have improved in massive ways.

CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilison has now given the Bears two A grades for last year’s selections of Williams and Odunze.

According to Brad Biggs, Johnson was upgraded to a full participant in practice on Thursday.

A returning Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon will be major boosts to a secondary that has struggled. TJ Edwards could return from surgery on a fractured hand as early as Sunday against Pittsburgh. He will also be a major boost to the defense.

As for the offense, Caleb Williams needs to be a more consistent, despite his massive improvement. Ben Johnson has created a top ten offense in just his first year as Bears head coach. If Williams can play like he does in the fourth quarter all around, this offense has the makings to be even more explosive. The possibilities for this team continues to grow every single week.

Despite the offense not reaching its full potential, the Bears’ offense is among the top in the NFL.

For the first time in Marc Trestman’s first season as head coach in 2013, the Bears’ offense are in multiple top ten categories.

The offense are currently fourth in the NFL in total yards per game. They also are second in the league in rushing yards.

After a struggling start to the season, the run game has been a pivotal part of the offense. D’Andre Swift is on the verge of having a career year. Rookie Kyle Monangai has also proven he deserves plenty of carries in this offense. This could potentially be Johnson’s version of what he had in Detroit with Gibbs and Montgomery.

The passing game hasn’t been perfect, however the Bears still rank 13th in passing yards per game. Caleb Williams still has a chance to reach 4,000 passing yards, despite underperforming on Sunday.

It’s honestly unbelievable to see such a turnaround from an offense that was near the bottom of the barrel for the last five to six years. Johnson has proved he should clearly be the running for NFL coach of the year,

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bears’ practice squad kicker will be heading to the team he defeated earlier in the season.

The Commanders have signed kicker Jake Moody off of the Bears practice squad, per source.

Moody spent the 2024 season with the San Fransisco 49ers. He was then cut by the 49ers following week one.

Moody was then brought onto the Bears’ practice squad following Cairo Santos’ early season struggles. Moody then played for the Bears against Washington. The second-year kicker made all of his kicks including the game winner.

This leaves the Bears with Santos as the only kicker on the team. Despite the struggles, Ben Johnson has remained confident in his kicker. Santos went on to kick a 48 yard game winner against Minnesota on Sunday.

Due to Williams’ leading several impressive comebacks this season, teammates and coaches now call him the “Iceman”. Due to the threat of his Mahomes-like scrambles out of the pocket and throws on the run, Williams imposes a huge threat to opposing defenses.

While the second-round draft pick caught all three of his targets for 51 yards. Many fans and media analysts have questioned why Zaccheaus is seeing the field over Burden. Burden has proved on multiple occasions that he should be involved more in the offense.

Williams hit Rome Odunze for a quick touchdown on the first of the two drives. On the second, he took it himself for a 17 yard touchdown run to give the Bears the win.

The box score and stats do not show how well Williams played. He had a few Mahomes like throws and had some very impressive scrambles outside the pocket.

The player that was open on that play was Olamide Zaccheaus, who dropped four catches including a wide open touchdown earlier in the game.

The radio hosts stated that “there are times when that kid looks like he has no idea what he’s doing” and proceeded to say that Dart is the better quarterback out of the two.

While Dart did play very well against a struggling Bears defense, to slam Williams like that when he clearly played well is just unnecessary.

To simply put it, the Bears’ quarterback put the team on his back and carried the offense when needed the most. Down 10 in the fourth quarter, Williams led two touchdown drives to give the Bears another improbable comeback.

Williams threw for a touchdown to Rome Odunze to cut the Giants’ lead to three points. The next drive he put the offense on his back with a great deep throw to rookie Luther Burden followed by an impressive 17 yard touchdown run to give the Bears the lead with 1:47 left on the clock.

The Bears’ QB had 144 total yards in the final two drives of the game. He put on an absolutely clutch performance.

If it wasn’t for the Bears’ receiving core having multiple key drops, Williams would’ve had over 300 yards and another touchdown pass. Williams being able to take control of the game even when his weapons were struggling is a massive sign of growth.

The Bears’ receiving core struggled badly during the game. Specifically, Olamide Zaccheaus had multiple key drops including dropping a wide open touchdown catch on a near perfect throw.

One of the bright spots of the offense was rookie Luther Burden getting more involved. The second-round pick caught all three targets he had for 51 yards including the 27 yard reception late in the fourth quarter, putting the Bears in range to take the lead.

Burden has shown that he deserves more snaps in the offense. It’s clear he can be a major problem against defenses. Head coach Ben Johnson needs to get him involved more moving forward. Burden should take over the slot receiver role over Zaccheaus.

CJ Gardner-Johnson is bringing an immediate impact to the Bears defense

The veteran defensive back has been arguably one of the most important players on the defense after only playing two games for Dennis Allen’s defense.

Johnson had an impressive two sacks and nine total tackles against the Giants. The veteran back has shown he can be solid in the secondary but can make impressive plays for the pass rush when needed.

The Bears’ defense are still a major concern, but having Gardner-Johnson is a key upgrade. The team still should look into adding an additional back prior to the schedule getting tougher, due to it being unknown when Kyler Gordon or Jaylon Johnson will return.

Kicker Cairo Santos was inaccurate yet again, missing a 47 yard field goal thankfully to be bailed out due to a hold call. Santos then missed another kick to end the first half.

To top it off, the kickoff and return teams continued to struggle badly. The special teams unit had constant holding and block in the back penalties throughout the game. Kick returner Devin Duvernay has rarely gone past the 25 yard line on nearly every return as well.

The Bears have been flat out terrible on kickoff coverage all year. Two weeks ago during the loss to the Ravens, the team gave up an average of 30 yards per return. This has led to Bears fans calling for the job of special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.

The most important part of Williams’ performance was he simply did enough to give the Bears the win. The quarterback has the tools to succeed, and he did his job in Week 9.

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobelski has given the Bears quarterback an A grade for how he played this past week.

Sobelski gave Williams this grade simply for doing what he needed to do against one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

”Caleb Williams did a bit of everything Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. More importantly, he was at his best when his team needed him the most.”

Not only Bleacher Report gave the second-year QB a high grade, Pro Football Focus did as well. PFF gave the Bears QB a grade of 91.5. Williams was the second highest graded quarterback among all quarterbacks that played in Week 9.

Likely, the Bears did not make any progress on a deal due to the asking price being way too much or the other team being simply uninterested in trading their top players. It was previously reported that the team tried to trade for Jermaine Johnson of the New York Jets, but did not go through with it due to the asking price being too high.

While I agree the Bears did the right thing by not giving up a second-round pick for an injury-prone Johnson, they should have added another pass rusher, even if it was just another rotational piece.

However, this gives rising Austin Booker a massive opportunity to prove himself. The second-year defensive end made his season debut during Week 9’s victory. Booker sacked Joe Flacco, forcing a fumble on the opening play of the fourth quarter against the Bengals. Booker also had a very impressive training camp over the summer.

It’s the simple layups that Williams needs to continue hitting in every single game. After an abysmal performance against the Baltimore Ravens, the Bears’ offense was able to come up with a miracle and win a thriller over the Cincinnati Bengals.

It still wasn’t perfect. The offensive line, particularly Theo Benedet struggled badly. Rome Odunze had zero receptions. The team also shot themselves in the foot with some bad penalties.

However, when the offense delivered when they needed it the most. Williams had a great bounce-back game, throwing for 280 yards and three touchdowns. DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus were finally able to get going and came in clutch when needed. We also finally saw a break through performance from Colston Loveland who caught two touchdowns including the incredible game winner.

If this is any other Bears team with a previous coaching staff, there is no doubt they lose that game. Ben Johnson proved once again that he is the right coach for this franchise.

After watching so many seasons of terrible Bears offenses, this is just so great to see. If they can clean up the dumb penalties and fixable mistakes, the potential will be even higher.

The bigger challenge for Dennis Allen and the Bears’ defense is the amount of weapons that the Bengals have on offense. Star wide receivers Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins are near impossible to cover. Cincinnati also has a great running back in Chase Brown.

While trash talking is common in all sports, you gotta live up to the expectations and play well in order to continue jawing at other players. It’s obviously clear that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams needs to improve. Through the first seven games of the season, Williams simply has not lived up to the standard of being a number-one overall pick.

Does Williams need to be better? Yes. Clearly. For example, the intentional grounding at the end of the second quarter against Baltimore. It cost the Bears some crucial yards. He’s also had throws that have been short of the sticks, costing the Bears first downs.

However, it’s still much better than the previous quarterbacks we’ve seen like Justin Fields and Mitch Trubisky. Williams is on pace to throw the most single-season passing yards in franchise history. If he can turn it around with some consistent football, he will have a chance to be the first Bears quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards.

Williams has still been making impressive throws throughout the season, including some Mahomes-like plays. However, he needs to simply just be more consistent.

Ben Johnson is clearly the right coach for him, and I’m still very confident they both can turn this around.

Austin Booker will return to the Chicago Bears for Week 9

Adam Jahns of CHGO confirmed the news in a post via X, on Monday.

Bears coach Ben Johnson said that DE Austin Booker will be activated from IR.

The defensive end has yet to play a game this regular season following a knee injury in the preseason. Booker was in the middle of a very impressive preseason before going down.

Booker didn’t do much during the 2024 regular season but he went off and impressed many earlier this summer. The defensive end had a three sack game against the Dolphins in the preseason opener.

Chicago clearly still needs help on the defensive line

Chicago enters Week 9 of the season needing much more depth at pass rusher. Rookie Shemar Turner is out for the season with a torn ACL, Dominque Robinson is also currently out with a high ankle sprain.

With how bad the defensive line has played and with how injured it is, Booker is a needed boost to the team. However, it is clear that GM Ryan Poles must make a move to add depth to the unit before it gets worse.

If the Bears want to be serious about having a chance at the playoffs, Poles needs to find some ways to improve this roster fast.

The Chicago Bears are going to be without some major players during Sunday’s Week 8 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Chicago will be without their two top cornerbacks, Kyler Gordon and Tyrique Stevenson. It seemed that this could be a prime opportunity for Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson to return.

But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it has been confirmed that the former NFL MVP will be out for another week.

In a post on X, the NFL insider revealed that the former NFL MVP will miss his third straight game on Sunday. Jackson did not practice with the starters this past Friday and ran the scout team instead.

Jackson returned to practice this past Monday in a limited capacity and practiced in full on Friday. It seemed likely that the star quarterback would return on Sunday, but now that is not the case. Baltimore elevated quarterback Tyler Huntley from the practice squad.

Huntley is expected to be the starter for the Ravens instead of Cooper Rush. Rush started the two games Jackson missed, but struggled greatly.

This could be one of the biggest breaks of the season for the Bears. It seemed Baltimore had a major advantage over the Bears since it was confirmed Gordon and Stevenson would be out for Sunday’s game.

With a depleted secondary, this is a great opportunity now for the defense to step up and continue dominating. A win over the Ravens and an improved record to 5-2 could be huge for Chicago going into the second half of the season.

While it hasn’t been pretty, the Bears are simply finding ways to win, unlike in seasons past. The defense has begun to find its footing and leads the NFL in takeaways. Offensively, the run game has finally started to get going. D’Andre Swift has been a force to be reckoned with, rushing for over 100 yards and getting a touchdown in the last two games. Quarterback Caleb Williams had a rough outing in Week 7’s win over the Saints; however, he has still shown improvement compared to last season.

The Chicago Bears are slowly emerging as a potential wild-card team. If they can keep stacking wins and playing consistent football, we might get some meaningful football come December. Due to the four-game turnaround, the Bears are surging up high in the NFL’s latest power rankings.

According to NFL.com’s latest power rankings, the Chicago Bears have moved up to the 14th-ranked team in the NFL. Ben Johnson’s team has moved up four spots from last week after Sunday’s 26-14 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Eric Edholm from NFL.com mentioned the emergence of D’Andre Swift and rookie running back Kyle Monangai as reasons the team has moved up. He also mentioned that even though Williams has been struggling at quarterback, they are still finding ways to win games.

“That’s now 15 takeaways in the past four games for the Bears and, perhaps not coincidently, four straight wins to completely turn the season around. Another pleasant development has been the emergence of the run game. D’Andre Swift kept it rolling against the Saints, and rookie Kyle Monangai had his best effort to date. The next packet of games (at Ravens, at Bengals, vs. Giants) looked a bit easier a few weeks ago, but these are still ones you can envision Chicago winning. Caleb Williams didn’t have a banner showing Sunday, and the snapping from Drew Dalman was a problem, but the Bears are playing well enough now to come up a little short in one or two facets and still win.”

 The Bears still have much room to improve

The Bears have the potential to be even better than what they currently are, and that starts with the passing game. While Caleb Williams has shown many flashes of greatness, he has still been inconsistent. During Week 7’s win, Williams did not play his best. He missed multiple layup throws and was running around too much. The pass protection has been better, but still at times has struggled, particularly at left tackle. Theo Benedet missed some blocks that led to Williams running for his life a couple of times.

Chicago also needs to clean up the penalties. The Bears shoot themselves in the foot many times in the red zone due to false start penalties. This has to be cleaned up going into Baltimore on Sunday.

Thankfully, the Bears have a great head coach and great coaching staff that the players clearly want to play for and win for. It’s clearly showing how good the coaching staff has been throughout the last four wins. If the Bears had a different coaching staff, they would not have a 4-2 record.

Theo Benedet has been the left tackle for the Chicago Bears since replacing Braxton Jones during Week 4’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders. The undrafted Canadian has impressed many since becoming the starter, especially with run blocking. The Bears’ offensive line has seemed to be much better since Darnell Wright returned at right tackle and since Jones was benched in favor of Benedet.

However, Benedet did not exceed expectations during Week 7’s victory over the New Orleans Saints. The left tackle struggled early and throughout the game. On one of the first pass plays of the game, Benedet got brought down by Chase Young. That missed block nearly led to an interception for Caleb Williams and led to a Bears punt. Benedet struggled heavily in pass protection and had some bad false starts as well.

During Monday’s press conference, Ben Johnson labeled Benedet’s play as “inconsistent.”

Johnson brought up the false starts and pass-protection struggles when asked about Benedet.

“It’s inconsistent, to say the least. You know, he had a couple false starts mixed in there. Run-game wise, he did some good things in terms of moving guys, but probably wasn’t as clean as it could be. And then in pass pro, I think Chase Young got after him just a little bit more than he had liked as well.”

The Bears head coach was then asked if Benedet has a longer leash. Johnson expressed his confidence in the undrafted left tackle, stating, “he’s going to get better with the more reps he gets”.

“I mean, we need all of our guys to perform at a high level for us to move the ball, score points on offense, win games as a team, and so the evaluation process always goes on. If there’s someone that’s not pulling his weight, then we got to make a decision there. But, no, I think he’s going to continue to get better with the more reps that he gets. And, you know, that wasn’t a slouch that he was going against yesterday on most of those snaps and I think he’s going to continue to get better.”

It’s clear the Bears head coach has confidence in his starting left tackle. Benedet has shown many great things since becoming the starter. Once he cleans up the penalties and blocking issues, he will get much better.

Fields has thrown under 50 passing yards in back-to-back games. Fields was benched in favor of veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor during the Jets’ 13-6 loss to the Panthers. The former first-round draft pick was signed to a 2-year 40 million contract with the Jets this past offseason, replacing Aaron Rodgers.

During his three years in Chicago, Fields showed flashes of potential but failed to live up to his potential. The former Bear struggled with his passing accuracy, taking sacks, and missing open throws. Fields has unfortunately dealt with multiple years of bad coaching and bad offensive line play; however, he has had many chances to turn his career around.

With the owner of the Jets having zero faith in his quarterback, it seems that Fields’ time as a starting quarterback could be all but over.

After a brutal start to the 2025 season, Dennis Allen might have brought back the monsters of the midway. Through the Chicago Bears’ four game winning streak, the defense has seen a major turnaround. Through the four games, the defense has gotten at least three takeaways. With a depleted pass rush, the Bears have started to finally get to the quarterback. During Sunday’s victory over the Saints, the Bears sacked Spencer Rattler four times and picked him off three times as well.

Due to the dominating performance, head coach Ben Johnson gave the Bears’ defensive coordinator the game ball following Sunday’s win. Allen called another terrific game for the Bears’ defense. With a secondary that is without Jaylon Johnson, they were still able to get three interceptions and came close to having a couple more.

Following the Bears’ embarassing 30 point loss to the Detroit Lions, the defense has ranked high in multiple categories. They currently rank third in the entire NFL in total yards allowed, fifth in passing yards allowed, and eighth in points allowed. Another huge upside of the defense is they have improved greatly in stopping the run. The Bears were able to stop the run game in both wins over the Commander and Saints. Allen’s defense only allowed 44 rushing yards during Sunday’s win over the Saints.

Chicago now leads the NFL with 16 takeaways on the year. Saftey Kevin Byard leads the NFL with four interceptions on the season. The veteran has been a major boost to the defense, especially with Jaylon Johnson being out. Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker staying healthy and making consistent plays has been major for the team. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is also having a great season, leading all NFL linebackers in interceptions.

The Bears need to build off this momentum and continue dominating on defense. If Lamar Jackson is cleared to play for Baltimore, it’ll be a tough test for Allen and the defense. If they can come out of week 8 with a win, they could very well be a playoff contender in the NFC.

The Chicago Bears are on fire. Ben Johnson’s Bears have won their fourth straight game, marking their first four-game win streak since the 2018 season. Chicago defeated the New Orleans Saints 26-14 mainly thanks to their defense and running game. They currently are in third place in the NFC North, tied with the Detroit Lions. To stay in the race for the NFC North and the NFC playoff picture, they must keep stacking wins up before the schedule gets tougher come late November/December.

Baltimore has dealt with a very rough season, however they can still be a dangerous team. Pro Bowl quarterback Lamar Jackson is expected to play on Sunday, returning from his injury. Linebacker and former Bear Roquan Smith has returned to practice for the Ravens as well. Derrick Henry is obviously still one of the best running backs in football, and they have multiple other playmakers on both sides of the ball.

The Bears have to come out firing on all cyilinders on Sunday. The defense needs to continue taking the football away. Dennis Allen’s defense has gotten at least three takeaways in the last four games and leads the NFL in takeaways. The offense will need to continue dominating the run game with D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monagai. However, Caleb Williams needs to improve his play at quarterback.

If the Bears can win this game and improve to 5-2, they could very well become a contender in the NFC playoff picture.
