The Sky will get reinforcements in the form of Hohnson, Reese’s old college teammate. Johnson is a dogged defender who will inject much-needed athleticism into a Chicago side bereft of it. Her stock dipped slightly in her senior season. But Johnson remains an alluring prospect. She should be able to feed Reese and Kamilla Cardoso with a healthy portion of entry passes in 2026 and beyond.”

Johnson played 141 games (139 starts) with the LSU Tigers over the course of four years. She averaged 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 29.2 minutes per game. Pairing Johnson with one of her former teammate in Angel Reese would be a massive positive. Johnson’s ability to improve her 3-point shooting each season while being a tough defender makes her an easy selection.

With two new teams entering the WNBA in the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire, there is an expansion draft taking place. Chicago has a lot of free agents heading into the offseason, but they made sure to keep their players away from the expansion draft. Let’s take a closer look at how they were able to make sure their players will not be selected.

The Chicago Sky made two trades to protect their players from the expansion draft

Chicago made it clear that they want to have the ability to keep their team together. The front office made a pair of trades making sure this is a possibility. They traded away the 2026 second-round pick (pick 26) via the New York Liberty to the Tempo and their own 2026 second-round pick (pick 17) in exchange for the rights that those teams will not select a player from the Sky in the expansion draft. In addition, Portland also sent its own 2026 second-round pick (pick 21).

As part of the WNBA expansion draft, Portland and Toronto can select players from other teams to add to their roster. Teams can protect up to five players, giving the two teams a list of unprotected players. The two teams select which players they want to fill a roster. If a player is an unrestricted free agent, they can still be selected, and the expansion team will have the ability to work a contract and offer a supermax deal with them.

For Chicago, they valued keeping their roster together rather than having to protect five players. Now, they do not need to worry about this as neither team can select a Sky player. Chicago now holds the following picks in the 2026 WNBA Draft after these moves:

• No. 5 overall (first round)
• No. 21 overall (second round)
• No. 32 overall (third round)

Chicago has four players under contract, meaning it will have a lot of decisions to make regarding their roster. Sabreena Merchant of The Athletic wrote a 2026 WNBA mock draft. She has the Sky taking UCLA guard Kiki Rice with the fifth pick. Below is what Merchant said about the Sky selecting Rice:

“Perhaps my focus on what Kiki Rice isn’t (a pure point guard) has obscured much of what she does well. The Big Ten tournament was laid bare exactly why Rice is so valuable: she puts pressure on the rim, she’s a willing playmaker and she is genuinely disruptive to opposing ballhandlers. That combination of defense and secondary offensive skills – plus she has good size – should result in a long pro career for Rice. The Sky need a point guard, especially one who knows how to make life easier for bigs, and Rice fits the bill.”

Rice has been having a career season with the Bruins in college basketball as they compete for the NCAA Championship. She is averaging 15.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals while having a 50.0/37.6/89.8 shooting split. Rice could be a welcome addition to the Chicago backcourt.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been balling out for Team USA this WNBA offseason. In her first-ever experience with the USA senior national team, Clark is leading the squad in scoring and assists.

Clark is coming off an injury that limited her to only 13 games in the last WNBA season. She has not played organized basketball for nearly eight months. Clark’s last game was against the Connecticut Sun in July.

Despite that, Clark was still called up to represent Team USA. The sharpshooting guard has been playing well in the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament. So far, Team USA has won three games, with two more left on its schedule.

In her last three games, Clark has been averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 assists. She is also shooting an efficient 62.5% from the field and 53.8% from three. In Clark’s Team USA debut, she scored 17 points and had 12 assists.

However, in their game against Puerto Rico, she was in a bit of a slump. Clark only scored eight points. She was also inefficient, shooting 33% from the field and only 20% from three. On top of that, she drew a lot of flak. A video from the game showed Clark apparently ignoring Angel Reese’s high-five attempt.

This drew a lot of attention online, criticizing Clark’s behavior towards her Team USA teammate.

“Why is she ignoring her @grok? Do they have beef,” a user commented.

“Hella disrespectful and that does look intentional sadly,” a viewer added.

“How would you tell me she didn’t see that hand?” a comment said along with a funny meme.

“That’s a character flaw on her, dont matter if you dont like someone or not, when you represent the Star and stripes you band together. She obviously still salty about not winning the natty,” a reaction read.

“I get it.  But you’re currently on the same team.  Clark needs to take the high road, be the good person regardless…doing so invalidates all of the prior shade Reese has thrown at you.  Don’t be like her, that gives Reese credibility in the eyes of those who want to doubt you,” another said.

“I can’t see CC leaving her teammate hanging like that. But I admit, it’s not a good look,” a supporter declared.

The rivalry between Clark and Reese goes way back to their collegiate basketball days. It extended when they turned pro. Despite that, both stars are now considered the “face of the league.”

Now that they’re teammates for Team USA, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie praised their partnership for the national team. Either way, both Reese and Clark will be the future of the WNBA and the USA National Team.

ESPN’s Michael Voepel wrote a one-round 2026 WNBA mock draft as we get closer to a potential CBA agreement. In the draft, he has the Sky drafting shooting guard Flau’jae Johnson out of LSU. Below is what he wrote about the pick:

“Johnson’s scoring average is down from last season (13.8 PPG compared with 18.6), but a lot of that has to do with LSU having so much strong guard play and spreading around the offense. One key stat is up this season for Johnson: She is shooting a career-best 43.9% from behind the arc. Her energy and effectiveness on defense are big positives as well.”

Johnson will have at least some chemistry if she is drafted here, as she was teammates with forward Angel Reese at LSU. The only guard under contract currently for Chicago is Hailey Van Lith, so there is certainly a need for backcourt help. With a majority of the WNBA All-Stars from last season already free agents once the lockout officially ends, this is a way to get some outstanding talent under contract.

Johnson has played 138 games in four years with LSU and is averaging 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.9 blocks with a 46.5/37.5/74.7 shooting split in 29.3 minutes per game. It would be an intriguing fit for Chicago if they could land Johnson with the fifth pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

As the name suggests, the AR1 Navy Halo boasts of a moody Vector Navy with a white exterior and accented with Peri Blue. Its release is part of Reebok’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection.

Reese continues to work with Reebok in debuting new colorways for AR1 with a visit to Australia. Reebok will be the official footwear partner for Australia’s Women’s National Basketball League in its 2027 season.

The WNBA star is part of a group that has bid for a 10th license in the WNBL. The bid would make her a part-owner of a franchise based in Brisbane.  

After debuting the AR1’s first three colorways in September 2025, Reese dropped various other colorways based on her Maryland roots. Apart from reebok.com, the AR1 Navy Halo can also be purchased at Dick’s Sporting Goods retailers. The retail price is pegged at $130.

The 23-year-old was named an All-Star for a second consecutive year behind averages of 14.7 points on 45.8% shooting, a WNBA-best 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals in 31.6 minutes per contest.

Despite Reese’s strong play, Chicago still finished with a 10-34 record. They ranked last among the 13 WNBA teams, tied with Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.

It was Reese’s first season with head coach Tyler Marsh. The 38-year-old was named as the Sky’s head coach ahead of the 2025 season. He was the successor of WNBA Hall of Famer Teresa Weatherspoon, who was fired after just one year with the Sky.

Weatherspoon was Reese’s head coach when the latter first entered the league. The two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year played a pivotal role in Reese’s development as a rookie. The two form a closed bond during their one season together. So much so that Reese was devastated when she learned about Weatherspoon’s exit.

There was a shortage of action between the two big-name stars last season, though, with Clark missing a significant part of the season due to injury.

Last season, both Sky-Fever matchups in Chicago were upgraded to United Center. For some reason, the team decided not to move one out of the two games this season.

The Aug. 8 matchup between Chicago and Indiana will be played at United Center. The rematch on Aug. 23, however, will take place at Wintrust Arena. It is unclear why the Sky made this decision.

A representative from the Fever issued a statement on the matter at hand.

“We can’t speak to what other teams may do in terms of venue changes,” a Fever spokesperson told Front Office Sports.

Apart from the Sky, a few other teams in the league also decided against moving their home games against the Fever to bigger arenas. This is despite the fact that the Fever generated some of the largest crowds for their games last season — both at home and on the road.

As the Fever’s statement said, however, they have no control over how opposing teams make their decision on game venues. Either way, Clark and Co. will come to town with the intention of securing a road win.

United Center has a capacity of over 20,000 for basketball games, which is double the capacity of Wintrust Arena.

The Sky have just two games scheduled at United Center in 2026. Apart from the Fever game on Aug. 8, Chicago will also host Aja Wilson and the Aces at United Center on June 28.

The Fever swept the season series against Chicago last season, 5-0. Reese and the rest of the Sky are eager to get some revenge.

Per the Associated Press, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was shot and killed by a federal immigration officer, prompting immediate protests.

Via the AP:

“The officer who shot Pretti is an eight-year Border Patrol veteran, federal officials said.

“The Minnesota National Guard has been activated by Gov. Tim Walz and is assisting local police amid growing protests. Guard troops are going to both the shooting site and a federal building where officials have squared off with protesters daily.”

The incident on Saturday sparked more outrage in Minneapolis. Earlier this month, 37-year-old Renee Good was killed after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed her in a vehicle.

On her X account, Reese posted a four-word message, saying she was praying for the United States.

The Chicago Sky have hired a new defensive assistant coach to join Tyler Marsh’s staff as the organization works to reshape its direction and respond to Angel Reese’s frustrations. Reese, one of the league’s brightest young players, has not held back in her criticism of the team’s recent choices. Following a second straight year without a playoff berth, the 23-year-old voiced her disappointment over the franchise’s limited effort to build a stronger, more competitive roster.

The organization took a hard stance on Reese’s criticism, handing her a half-game suspension near the end of the season. When she later skipped her exit interview, it added even more uncertainty to her future, sparking talk that she might explore other options if the Sky do not take clear steps toward building a more competitive roster.

While the move does not deliver the star teammate Reese likely wants, the Sky did bring in Latricia Trammell as an assistant. Trammell arrives with eight years of coaching experience, including a two-season run as the Dallas Wings’ head coach from 2023 to 2024.

In her first season leading the Wings in 2023, Trammell guided Dallas to 22 wins, the franchise’s highest total since relocating in 2016.

Even with her defensive pedigree, Trammell guided a Dallas team that consistently produced on offense. During the 2023 season, the Wings climbed to third in points per game and third in offensive rating, proving she can shape an efficient attack while still anchoring a sturdy defense.

Trammell’s arrival might give Reese a reason to feel encouraged, but her earlier remarks make it clear that one hire will not be enough. Reese wants the Sky to build a roster capable of competing at the top of the league, and she will keep pushing for additional upgrades before she fully buys in.

“I’m not settling for the same s— we did this year. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me,” Reese said in a previous interview.

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese just completed her second season in the WNBA as questions linger about the future of the team this season. Despite the struggles the team had, Reese had another good year and she will be facing another busy offseason ahead.

That includes making some history early on this offseason.

Angel Reese to walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

On Thursday, Reese took to social media to reveal she will be the first pro athlete to walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this October. Reese shared images of her stunning in lingerie that she will model during the show on October 15th.

The 23-year-old also announced a global partnership with the iconic brand. The two will work on collaborations moving forward.

The show was revived in 2023 and will air its third addition since then on October 15th in New York City. KAROL G, Madison Beer, Missy Elliott and TWICE will headline the show as performers.

Angel Reese has expressed interest in modeling before

While Reese still has a lot of basketball left in her career, she isn’t shy from sharing future plans. That includes showing an interest in modeling.

And she’s racked up another endorsement deal in the process as The Athletic points out:

Reese, who has previously said she would love to model in addition to her athletic endeavors, announced her intent to enter the WNBA Draft with a Vogue photo shoot. She made headlines when she attended the 2024 Met Gala, then played in a Sky preseason game 24 hours later. She returned to the Met Gala in 2025, this time as a member of the host committee.

Juicy and Victoria’s Secret join a growing list of brands connected to the 2024 WNBA Draft’s No. 7 pick. Brands Reese has deals and collaborations with include: Reebok, Barbie, Topps, Beats by Dre, Tampax, Amazon, and PlayStation. In September, Reese joined co-founders Alex Morgan, Sue Bird, Simone Manuel, and Chloe Kim as members of the ownership group of the women’s sports media and content company TOGETHXR.

Reese continues to get involved in endeavors outside of basketball with this just being the latest case.

Angel Reese believes the front office let the Chicago Sky down this season. She has a demand before her third season in the WNBA.

The Sky have had a lackluster season, sitting at bottom place in the Eastern Conference with a 9-30 record. Only the Dallas Wings have a worse record, but that’s because they’ve played two more games than Chicago.

Per Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Reese voiced her displeasure with the roster the front office put together in the offseason, accusing general manager Jeff Pagliocca of settling.

A non-negotiable for Angel Reese

“I’m not settling for the same (expletive) we did this year,” Reese said. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me.

“I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason. So it’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.”

The Chicago Sky’s plans did not work out in 2025

The Sky added veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot and traded for two-time All-Star Ariel Atkins in the offseason. Vanersloot suffered a season-ending ACL injury in June. Reese has missed time this season with a back injury.

The injuries and limitations of a young team learning first-year head coach Tyler Marsh’s system have led to a poor product on the court. The record is an embarrassment to Reese, who has won a national championship at LSU and won a championship with Rose BC in the United league this year.

The Sky look like a team that is far away from being a contender despite Reese’s promising stats. She’s averaging 14.6 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.

Reese doesn’t think Vandersloot, 36, will be the same player after her ACL injury. She wants someone younger to replace Vandersloot. She also wants the team to compete harder, like the Golden State Valkyries.

Reese threatened to go elsewhere

Reese suggested she’d leave Chicago if the team didn’t fill out the roster properly.

“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want,” Reese said. “I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”

Despite a rough start to the season filled with setbacks and major adjustments, the Chicago Sky are taking steps forward as a team.

With the All-Star break approaching, the Sky are currently 6-13, 10th in the WNBA standings out of 13 teams. Being led by a first-time head coach, Tyler Marsh, has presented its fair share of challenges in ensuring the pieces jell in a way that maximizes one of the young core pieces, Angel Reese.

Social Media backlash

Angel Reese faced major online criticism after a rough start to the season. As the critics were out in full force, they used the term “Mebounds” to describe and make fun of her rebounding style.

Reese’s early-season woes gave the critics credence. In the first seven games, Reese averaged 9.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists to 3.7 turnovers, shooting inefficiently at 30.8% from the floor and 70% from the free-throw line on 4.2 per game while having a 22.1% usage rate.

In the postgame presser, Ariel Atkins addressed the unnecessary criticism Reese receives outside of basketball.

Founding rhythm in Tyler Marsh’s system

Instead of giving in to the critics, Angel Reese has blocked the noise, regained her confidence, and found her rhythm in Tyler Marsh’s system after a rough start to the season.

Here’s Angel Reese taking accountability on her early-season woes.

“I struggled in the first 8, 9 games…obviously it happens and I was very hard on myself…tough conversations with people who kept it real with me…I’m being a point guard, a four, a five…and guarding all five positions too. I trust my work…I have read conversations with Lisa, I talk to Spoon every single day.”

While getting acclimated in a new system with a new coach and early adjustments were needed, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese has been playing her best basketball of the 2025 WNBA season in the recent stretch of games.

Over her last 12 games, Reese is averaging 15.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists to 3.5 turnovers, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 48.1% from the floor and 82.8% from the free-throw line on 5.3 attempts per game.

This includes her first career triple-double in a win over the Connecticut Suns and her best performance of the season —posting a stat-line of 24 points (on 10/19 shooting from the floor), 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three stocks, in a win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

Additionally, Marsh dove deeper into Reese’s impact on the team, seamlessly stepping into her role.

“Angel was incredible tonight. Obviously missing KC, she had to do a little bit more. You can’t say enough. It’s little things she does as well that don’t get the notice,” said Marsh.”She’s found a way which speaks to her maturity growing into this position and system.”

Developing as a Facilitator: Since Courtney Vandersloot unfortunately went down with a season-ending torn ACL.

Marsh has utilized Reese more as a point forward, allowing her to initiate offense and be more of a facilitator. By operating from the high post, elbow, and on the perimeter, she has created more opportunities for both herself and her teammates.

Playing with Space & Pace: The most significant scheme shifts and what Marsh’s system aims to be—creating spacing on the court, which allows Reese to drive and operate both in the post and on the perimeter, which allows her to create for both herself and her teammates.

Spinning back to blocking out the noise and having the mental fortitude to overcome the harshness of social media and early-season woes in a new system with a new coach is a special trait in itself.

Perfect example, instead of being affected by the “Mebounds” term, Reese embraced the online criticism and turned it into a trademark for her brand.

Through this recent stretch, Reese made history by recording six consecutive games of 15+ rebounds, surpassing her previous record of five straight games with 15+ rebounds.

Reese also joined A’ja Wilson, Jonquel Jones, and Lisa Leslie as the only players to post three consecutive games with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds. All are MVP winners.

Angel Reese let her emotions boil over toward the end of the Chicago Sky‘s 81-79 loss to the Washington Mystics in front of 9,350 fans at EagleBank Arena. Reese’s 22 points, 15 rebounds, and four assists were not enough to keep Chicago from falling to 5-13 on Tuesday.

With 29.9 seconds remaining and the Sky tied 79-79, Reese was seen slapping the clipboard out of an assistant coach’s hand. The context of Reese’s behavior was not known at the time, but the second-year WNBA player has been frustrated with league referees in recent days.

Following the game, Reese went on social media to clear up what happened. She used stars to block out the word, but appeared to claim the refs were upsetting her, and said her coach would not let her apologize for the incident.

Reese did get the free-throw line more in Tuesday’s contest. She went 12-of-15 on free throw attempts. Chicago had 25 free throw attempts to the Mystics’ 31.

The Sky dont’t have much time to feel sorry about their two-game losing streak. Chicago will host the Mystics on Thursday.

The Sky won two out of their final three games in June but are winless in July and are tied with the Wings for the league’s second-worst record. They have a three-game lead on the WNBA’s worst Connecticut Sun.

Angel Reese couldn’t hide her frustration following the Chicago Sky‘s 80-75 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday night in front of 8,810 fans at Target Center. The Sky entered the contest with some momentum, winning two of their final three games to end June.

Chicago was shorthanded against Minnesota, with Courtney Vandersloot out for the season with an ACL injury. The Sky have been without second-year center Kamilla Cardoso, who has not played with the Sky since June 24, as she joined Brazil for the FIBA AmeriCup.

A big miss for the Chicago Sky

Cardoso earned silver as Brazil lost 92-84 to the United States on Sunday night in the championship round of the tournament.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, the Sky were unsure this weekend whether Cardoso would join the team for their contest on the road against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday or in Chicago on Wednesday when they face the Dallas Wings.

Cardoso’s absence has been hard on the Sky, and she might have made the difference in a five-point loss to a 17-2 Lynx team.

Angel Reese: We did the best with “what we had”

Following the game, Reese told reporters that she was frustrated with the WNBA referees while she and the team were doing the best they could with “what we had,” seeming to refer to the absence of Vandersloot and Cardoso, two starters for Chicago.

“It’s tough when you talk to officials and I ask them, ‘Hey, (why) we only shot two free throws. We only missed a free throw…’ She tells me it’s not her job,” Reese told the media during her press conference. “So I know it’s frustrating, because I know how hard we’re battling inside, and I think that we came down and fought as hard as we could with what we had.

“And I just want, I just know we continue to grow in this. And I think it’s a leaping step for us, and obviously we know obviously we know we can compete with the best, but that has to be fixed, and I don’t give a (expletive) if I get a fine, because that (expletive) cheap. And I am tired of the shit because I’ve been nice and I’ve been humble with it, but I am tired of the (expletive).”

During the FIBA AmeriCup, Reese has posted positive messages for her Sky teammate. Still, it’s understandable to feel frustrated by not having Cardoso on the floor during WNBA games.

Reese, now a two-time All-Star, fought hard against Minnesota. She finished with 16 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists, finishing at a plus-2 on the court.

Cardoso is averaging 12.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game this season. Her replacement, Elizabeth Williams, finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. She was a minus-four on the court.

Angel Reese’s attitude with the WNBA went noticeably south from earlier Sunday when the second-year Chicago Sky forward was named as a reserve All-Star.

Reese went scorched earth on the WNBA and officials following the Sky’s 80-75 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in front of 8,810 fans at Target Center on Sunday night. The loss dropped the Sky to 5-12 on the season.

Reese had an issue with the way referees Angelica Suffren, Miniam Maru, and Clare Aubry called the game. The Sky shot just eight free throw attempts the entire night, making seven of them. The Lynx went 14-of-17 from the line.

Reese went 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She finished with 16 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists in the loss, continuing her hot streak in recent weeks.

Following the game, Reese blasted the WNBA and the refs calling the game for not calling more fouls in the Sky’s favor.

Reese had a monster performance in the Sky’s 92-85 win over the LA Sparks on Sunday in front of 13,523 fans at crypto.com Arena. She scored 24 points and recorded 16 rebounds, prompting some fans to question if she was catching Caitlin Clark, as the Indiana Fever star has struggled shooting amid her groin injury.

Following news that earned the POTW award, Reese posted a message invoking God for helping her through the early-season difficulties.

Reese has been playing well as of late. The second-year WNBA player is averaging 11.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game this season. She’s recorded 59 points and 51 rebounds in her last three games.

Reese’s recent assurance comes while Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark has had issues amid a groin injury. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft scored just six points in her last outing and has recorded 36 points, 12 rebounds, and 28 assists in her last three games.

Some fans on social media noticed Reese is beginning to play better and might be close to challenging Clark’s dominance as the best player in the 2024 class on the court.

The Chicago Sky 2025 season is off to a rough start, beginning the season with a 4-10 record, falling to the bottom three standings in the league, due to trying to establish their identity, commit to a new style of play and the integration of first-year head coach Tyler Marsh, which has been a struggle.

Add in the string of injuries, including a significant blow to the team, as franchise legend Courtney Vandersloot recently tore her ACL and is out for the remainder of the season. It’s easy to see why many Sky fans are hitting the panic button—14 games into the season.

The transition of Tyler Marsh off to a rough start

After replacing Teresa Weatherspoon over the offseason, first-time head coach Tyler Marsh stepped into a franchise in transition with a vision for this team’s style of play—to play with space and pace.

Hence, the construction of the roster, being vastly different—with the offseason acquisitions of Ariel Atkins, Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, Rebecca Allen, Hailey Van Lith, and Maddy Westbeld.

Yet, a quarter into the season, the Sky have lacked cohesion and rhythm on offense, along with consistency issues on the defensive end—ranking towards the bottom of key statisticial metrics—12th in offensive rating (97.2), defensive rating (110.3), and points per game (77.9), 8th in field goal percentage (42.3%), 11th in three-point percentage (30.4%), and last in points allowed (88.2) and turnovers per game (17.8), resulting in a lack of offensive production.

However, in recent games, the Sky have shown offensive flashes—shooting the three-ball more efficiently and operating more in fast-break situations and second-chance opportunities. However, the lack of offensive execution and consistency will be an area of development as Marsh will focus on the long-term picture as he builds a culture.

Here’s Tyler Marsh’s outlook on the progress of forming an identity and establishing a culture:

“I think it’s about establishing identity. It’s really all of our first year together, so it’s a clean slate. Establishing a culture, a mindset, and an identity of who we want to be — not just for this year but for the future — that’s how we’ll gauge our growth,” said Marsh.

Unlocking Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso

Through the rough start, the growth of second-year players Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso continues to be the most pivotal factor for the Sky’s success moving forward.

Reese is averaging 11.3 points and is currently leading the WNBA in rebounds at 11.9 per game. Despite early-season offensive efficiency woes, the critics have certainly made it known. Over the past several games, in the absence of Vandersloot, the Sky have put more responsibility on Reese.

Playing more point-forward, being utilized more as a facilitator, starting fast breaks and going coast-to-coast, and attacking defenders off the dribble from the perimeter have resulted in her best performances of the season.

Reese’s shooting mechanics and efficiency need improvement, but she is only scratching the surface of what she could be as a player.

There has been an emphasis on involving Cardoso in more offensive action and making sure she is actively engaged. Cardoso is averaging 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds on 56% shooting from the floor.

Already set a new career-high 27 points in a win over the Los Angeles Sparks. At 6’7, Cardoso has the physical tools to be a two-way force.

Manufacturing consistency on a nightly basis, especially from a mental approach, is what coach Tyler Marsh is working on connecting with Cardoso.

Tyler Marsh’s system continues to stress versatility and has pushed Cardoso and Reese to expand their games.

The Sky prioritized adding more floor spacing on the perimeter to allow the second-year frontcourt to showcase more of their game by having more space to operate.

Van Lith not only faces a tall task in adjusting to the WNBA’s speed and physicality, but she also faces an increased burden of running the offense.

Here’s what Tyler Marsh had to say about Hailey Van Lith’s development and impact early on in her rookie year:

“I think the biggest thing is that we trust her. We trust her as a staff, her teammates trust her. She provides valuable minutes. She’s been a sponge… when it comes to learning and gaining experience from her teammates and from our staff, and she works extremely hard… which everyone knows is in her DNA”.

The development of Van Lith becomes a bigger priority as the Sky hopes to achieve long-term success.

The Sky faces a grueling and compact schedule over the next few weeks. With Vandersloot out, Cardoso leaving temporary to play for Team Brazil in the AmeriCup, and everyone trying to accumulate themselves in Tyler Marsh’s system—to find their footing, more burden will be placed on Atkins and the frontcourt to right the ship.

As of Saturday, Angel Reese ranked No. 13 in fan voting for a spot in the upcoming WNBA All-Star game on July 19 with 173,363 votes. The second-year forward made the game as a rookie and has been using her ginormous platform on social media to promote her campaign.

Entering the Chicago Sky‘s contest on Saturday against the Phoenix Mercury, Reese had a strong claim to make the contest, boasting a double-double of points and rebounds per game this season at 11 points and 11.7 rebounds. Her numbers took a dive following the Sky’s lopsided 107-86 loss to Phoenix in front of 7,291 fans at Wintrust Arena.

Reese made her only field goal attempt of the game, a three-pointer. She finished with nine points thanks to going 6-of-6 from the free throw line, but added two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. To her credit, Reese had no turnovers in 21 minutes on the floor, but she finished as a minus-25 on the court, the worst plus/minus of any player in the game.

Chicago Sky fans aren’t sure Angel Reese is an All-Star player

Fans on social media questioned if Reese was deserving of an All-Star appearance based on her play recently.

“Reese spent more time and focus on social media than at practice or the game. She’s worrying about her votes for all star game,” wrote a fan.

“Reese is All Star caliber?,” questioned a fan.

“Reese is down by 27 with a +\- of -25 and she wants you to vote for her to be an All Star,” posted another.

Two days after recording her first career triple-double, Angel Reese put up a double-double in the Chicago Sky‘s 79-72 loss to the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night in front of 7,579 fans at Wintrust Arena. Reese went 7-of-13 shooting for 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

But the real story for Reese and the Sky was the turnover battle. The second-year power forward gave up seven turnovers, meaning she had two more turnovers than assists against the Mystics.

Chicago as a whole surrendered 40 points off 22 turnovers. Washington had 16 turnovers.

Angel Reese called the Chicago Sky’s performance “unacceptable”

Following the game, Reese told the media that giving up 40 points off turnovers was “unacceptable.”

“40 points off 25 turnovers is literally unacceptable,” Reese said before owning up to her seven-turnover performance.

“Seven turnovers for me just can’t happen,” Reese said. “I’m trying to relieve my guards. I got to be better.”

Turnovers have been a problem for the Reese and the Sky all season. Reese has been the main culprit, averaging a team-high 3.9 turnovers per contest and leading the league in turnovers with 43.

Following Sunday’s win over the Connecticut Sun, Reese said she was still figuring out how to be a more efficient passer in head coach Tyler Marsh’s system. She believes bigs can have the most beautiful passes.

A tough weekend schedule is coming

Unfortunately, bad passes and poor play cost Chicago a chance to win a much-needed game against a sub-.500 Mystics team. The Sky needed to win Tuesday’s game to inch closer to becoming a .500 team and to show consistency.

At 3-8, the Sky have two challenging games scheduled for this weekend. They’ll host the (8-4) Phoenix Mercury on Saturday before traveling to play the (8-4) Atlanta Dream on Sunday.

The Chicago Sky have one of the most important games of the season coming up on Tuesday. Fresh off a 78-66 win over the Connecticut Sun, the Sky have an opportunity to show consistency by beating a 4-7 Washington Mystics team at Wintrust Arena.

At 3-7, everyone on the Sky, from general manager Jeff Pagliocca to head coach Tyler Marsh to players on the roster, knows they underperformed to begin the season.

Following Chicago’s win on Sunday, Angel Reese said she “didn’t understand” the role that Marsh decided for her in training camp. Reese said she’s still figuring that out in mid-June.

Chicago Sky rookie Hailey Van Lith has been put in bad situations

Reese doesn’t appear to be the only player who feels that they were underprepared for the season. Rookie point guard Hailey Van Lith said she was put in situations that the TCU standout was not ready to handle.

“I think I’ve had opportunities that I haven’t necessarily been ready for this year,” Van Lith told the media postgame on Sunday after leading the Sky in scoring with 16 points against the Sun. “It’s all a journey. Those times that I wasn’t ready…I watched the film and I learned from it.

“I had people on the team, like Angel, (Courtney Vandersoot), Rachel Banham, who are continually talking to me and telling me that when it comes again, we want you to try again. Never lose that edge.”

Van Lith had to change from being someone who used to create plays with her dribble to creating opportunities for the team via the triple catch threat.

HVL wanted more minutes

The Sky have also put Van Lith in a hard situation this year, giving the No. 11 pick limited minutes at point guard until Sunday, when she played 24 minutes against Connecticut.

“Sometimes you just have that feeling,” Van Lith said. “I’ve been in a good flow state this week. I figured if I came out and played well, (Marsh) might give me some more minutes.”

Clearly, Van Lith thinks she’s ready for opportunities on the court, but she’s concerned about what she’s being asked to do, and how many minutes she’s being asked to do it in. It’s been hard for her to get in rhythm playing 4-10 minutes a game.

Marsh didn’t have the Sky ready to play in the early season. It was known the team needed time to jell in a new system, but the process hasn’t been as smooth as anyone would like.

Now, the Sky must consistently play like they have against the league’s worst two teams, or a bigger problem could be coming for Marsh.

The Chicago Sky made big adjustments to their offense and roster before the season, the first under head coach Tyler Marsh. The Sky brought in Marsh to develop young talents Angel Reese and Kamila Cardoso, who spent their rookie season in an offense that was based on the whims of Chennedy Carter.

Whether the Sky would be better off with Carter on the team is a fair question after 10 games. Chicago is 3-7, with their only wins coming against the 2-8 Connecticut Sun and the 1-11 Dallas Wings.

Beginning in the preseason, one point of emphasis Marsh had for Reese was for her to play outside the post as a point forward. She hasn’t played that position well, averaging more turnovers per game (3.6) than assists (3.5).

On Sunday, Reese recorded her first career triple-double, scoring 11 points on 28% shooting while adding 13 rebounds and 11 assists.

Angel Reese “didn’t understand” Tyler Marsh’s request

During her postgame press conference, Reese explained how she’s working to become a better passer, something Marsh wants to excel at in his offense. Reese said she “didn’t understand” her role in his offense at the beginning of the season and is trying to figure it out before Game 11.

“I’ve kinda been a passer all my career,” Reese said. “Like, I came out of high school as the number one wing and trying to get back to that and being super versatile. Tyler made that emphasis early on in the season. I didn’t understand it, and I really was confused and trying to figure it out. I’m still figuring it out. But I have patience, obviously.

“Tonight, it came out big. I think bigs have the best passes. So I’m just super excited. To add it with a win, it feels really good.”

The Chicago Sky need Reese to play better

Marsh’s strategy worked against the second-worst team in the WNBA, but Reese and the Sky need to play consistently good against better teams on the schedule if they want to make a push for the postseason.

Reese’s admission is one not often given by athletes about their coaches. But it seems Reese had issues transitioning in Marsh’s offense, and that could be a reason for her and Chicago’s slow start to the season.

Hopefully, Reese and Marsh get on the same page, because Chicago’s best chance of winning games comes when Reese is having her best games.

The Chicago Sky are not where general manager Jeff Pagliocca thought they’d be after 10 games. The Sky are 3-7, with their only wins coming against WNBA bottom feeders, the Dallas Wings and Connecticut Sun. The Wings and Sun have a combined 3-19 record.

Last week, Pagliocca made a few telling criticisms of the team before and after their 85-66 loss to the New York Liberty on Tuesday. Pagliocca said Reese needed to show better production on the court and that the team was showing him that they needed to make serious changes, even before losing Courtney Vandersloot for the season.

Reese earned her first career triple-double on Sunday, showing that the Sky need to continue building around her skill set as a facilitator and rebounder.

The Chicago Sky are looking at taking a drastic action

Per Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Pagliocca is considering taking the drastic step of forgoing free agency and the trade market to pluck players from Europe when their time in the EuroBasket tournament is over.

“If (Moriah) Jefferson can’t get healthy, the Sky likely will waive a contract to look for a perimeter player who can help team defense and facilitation while also producing some 3-point shooting,” Poe wrote. “But this could take time, especially because Pagliocca also is considering the potential of courting European players who will be available after the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket.

“The conclusion of this tournament later this month will free up a wide range of players who are currently unsigned in the WNBA, giving the Sky a wider talent pool to pitch. And by that time, the prorated version of most midlevel contracts would fit under the Sky’s remaining salary cap.”

The Sky have a chance to become contenders with help

Pagliocca is hoping the Sky are in a much different position by the start of July. Following Chicago’s 78-66 win over the Sun on Sunday, the team has six games remaining in June. Of those six games, only the Phoenix Mercury and Atlanta Dream have winning records.

If the Sky can start playing consistently winning basketball, some help from Europe could help Reese and the young roster become a playoff threat this summer.

The Connecticut Sun didn’t need to give Angel Reese more ammunition, but the Chicago Sky star finished Sunday’s game with an exclamation point for her career following an intense moment in the third quarter.

The Sky entered Sunday’s contest having suffered three-straight blowouts tallying a combined 64 points. On Saturday, Reese’s rival, Caitlin Clark went off for 32 points in a 102-88 upset of the previously undefeated (and defending champion) New York Liberty on Saturday.

On Sunday, Reese showed her strength on offense, facilitating strong passes to teammates and grabbing defensive boards in a 78-66 win over the Sun in front of 8,451 fans at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Chicago Sky-Connecticut Sun had a heated moment

In the third quarter, Sun guard Bria Hartley grabbed Reese’s left ponytail when the second-year forward went up for a rebound. Reese confronted Hartley and wound up shoving Olivia Nelson-Ododa when the Connecticut forward stepped in.

Reese made a statement on the floor after the incident, recording 11 points on 2-of-7 shooting. Despite her poor shooting on Sunday, Reese’s point total was aided by a 7-for-7 effort on free throws. She added 13 rebounds, 11 assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Angel Reese had a career day

On Tuesday night, Reese became the fastest WNBA player in history to earn 30 double-doubles. On Sunday, Reese earned her first career triple-double, and it came via a victory that improved Chicago’s record to 3-7. The Sun dropped to 2-8.

The Sky have an off day on Monday before they host the Washington Mystics on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CDT. Reese and the Sky will try and create some momentum this week (and month) going against sub .500 teams in the WNBA.

The Chicago Sky battled hard in the first half of their contest against the Atlanta Dream, taking a 39-38 lead into halftime. A fourth-quarter collapse led to a nightmare finish in an 88-70 loss to the Dream in front of 3,296 fans at Gateway Center.

After earning their first two wins of the season against the Dallas Wings, the Sky have been blown out by a combined 64 points in losses to the Indiana Fever, New York Liberty, and Dream since June 7.

On Tuesday, Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca called out Angel Reese’s production, saying the second-year forward needed to score more consistently. She led Chicago with 17 points against the Liberty, but went 4-of-10 shooting for 12 points with nine rebounds, three assists, one steal, and three turnovers on Friday night.

Reese was a minus-14 on the court against the Fever.

The Chicago Sky are making Jeff Pagliocca worried

Per an interview with Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, after his comments about Reese went viral, Pagliocca voiced an update on his concerns about the Sky’s recent blowouts, saying that they should “embarrass” people into playing harder. He thinks the season-ending injury to Courtney Vandersloot will force a change in the locker room.

Amid a 2-7 start, Pagliocca is worried about his job with the Sky. He knows his job and head coach Tyler Marsh’s job are under fire while the team is losing games.

“We’re going to get killed until we start winning games,” Pagliocca said. “Tyler will get killed, I’ll get killed. We’re used to it. … And I’m going to be way more angry and disappointed than (ownership) ever could be. They shouldn’t be happy — they should be disgusted like I am — but we still have to solve the problem.

“We will not stop. We are working hard. Players are staying longer. They’re recognizing they need to be looking in the mirror. … There’s only (35) games left. How patient can you be?”

Angel Reese and the Sky have a favorable schedule upcoming

The Sky have a very winnable schedule upcoming that Reese and the team need to show they can play competitive basketball. Chicago will travel to play the 2-7 Connecticut Sun at 11 a.m. CST on Sunday berofe hosting the 4-7 Washington Mystics on Tuesday at least 7 p.m. CST.

Per ESPN analytics, the Sky have a 50.6% chance of defeating the Sun.

Following back-to-back day games against the Phoenix Mercury on June 21 and the Dream on June 22, the Sky will finish the month against three sub-.500 teams: LA Sparks (4-7), Golden State Valkyries (4-5), and Sparks (4-7).

Chicago needs to win some of these games to show Pagliocca and Marsh are competent, because not everything going wrong on the floor can be attributed to the players. Roster construction and scheme have been an issue in lopsided losses.

Following Reese’s performance against the defending WNBA champs, the Sky have changed their tune on Reese’s production.

The Chicago Sky aren’t happy with their 2-6 record to begin the season under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. General manager Jeff Pagliocca had a warning for Angel Reese about her play, and it came amid rumors that she could be traded.

Per Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times, Pagliocca voiced his frustration with the team’s poor start, saying he was “disappointed” with the results so far after he made significant moves and trades to give veteran experience to the roster.

The Chicago Sky have underperformed

Under Marsh, the offense is scoring 76 points per game, the second-lowest in the league. With Reese struggling to score baskets consistently, reporter Karli Bell named the second-year forward as an option for the Sky to trade for guard help to replace Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury on Saturday.

Before Chicago’s 79-52 loss to the New York Liberty on Tuesday night, Pagliocca told Lieser the Sky were frustrated with Reese’s inability to stretch the floor as a point forward, struggling with turnovers and perimeter shooting.

Do the Chicago Sky have an All-Star?

Reese is averaging 10.1 points, 21.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.9 turnovers, 1.6 steals, and .3 blocks per contest this season. The No. 7 pick in the 2024 draft is shooting 35.8% from the field and is a minus-11.5 on the court per game in 2025. Still, she earned her 30th double-double in Tuesday nights loss.

Atkins leads the Sky in scoring at 13.4 points per game. She’s averaging 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals, 2.4 turnovers, and .4 blocks per game this season.

Cardoso is averaging 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.8 turnovers, .3 steals, and .6 blocks per contest in 2025.

The Sky have not jelled as a unit, but some fans might give individuals on Chicago the benefit of the doubt. Chicago’s minus-13.5 point differential this season is the second worst in the league, only better than the Connecticut Sun, who owns the WNBA’s worst record at 2-7.

Angel Reese was moved to tears Tuesday night following the Chicago Sky‘s 85-66 loss to the New York Liberty. Reese played a solid game, earning the 30th double-double of her WNBA career.

Postgame, Reese was asked if she gained confidence after her performance on Tuesday night, as she received heavy criticism online from fans calling out her poor shooting percentage and high turnover rate to begin the season.

Reese claimed that she wasn’t worried about the perception keyboard warriors have of her. Reese’s answer prompted Ariel Atkins to defend the second-year power forward before Reese undermined the point.

Chicago Sky’s Ariel Atkins had a lecture for the media

Atkins lectured the media, saying that Reese, a 23-year-old woman, was in fact a “kid” who has handled her situation with “grace.” Atkins asked reporters to stick with questions about what happened on the basketball court, specifically wanting questions pertaining only to box scores, calling questions about fan backlash “nonsense” and “irrelevant.”

“Her crown is heavy,” Atkins said of Reese. “So whatever else, like, y’all want to come at her for the way that she acts, she has to build the wall. She has to have the wall. Because if she doesn’t, people will break her down… No, she knows who she is and we ain’t gonna break her down for that.

“So whatever other questions y’all got, like, I’m hoping it’s just about basketball, maybe a box score question, but the kids’ crown is heavy. Like, respect that.”

It’s not the first time the Sky or Reese have shut down questions about non-basketball-related activity, saying that they want to stick to the game during postgame press conferences.

Angel Reese undermined her teammate’s point

The point would be fair enough, but the ever-outspoken Reese didn’t keep it to basketball during the press conference.

Unprovoked, Reese went on a tangent about Coco Gauff, who was in attendance at Barclays Center Tuesday night after winning the French Open, and mixed social issues during her praise of the Tennis athlete.

“Obviously, congrats to Coco,” Reese said while Akins nodded her approval. “She’s a major as a young black woman. I’m super inspired by everything she does, and to see her come show up to a WNBA game obviously shows how much she supports women. She supports women in sports, and I just hope she continues to just be her.

“She’s her and through everything. And I know it’s tough days, and as a young woman with so much fame and so much going on in the outside. She just continues to thrive through, and I’m super inspired.”

Reese made the comment minutes after saying that all she wants to do is “go to work and enjoy my job.”

Look, what makes Reese such a spectacle is her voice. Many of the things she advocates for in women’s sports are admirable.

But she can’t have it both ways. Teammates like Atkins can’t be telling the media to stick to box scores while Reese talks about social issues. That’s just not how discourse works.

Reese undermined her teammates’ point, and the Sky took another “L” in the process.

The Chicago Sky are counting on Angel Reese to be a key contributor on offense now that veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot is done for the season after suffering a torn ACL injury in Saturday night’s 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever.

Reese entered Tuesday night’s contest against the New York Liberty shooting under 31% on the season, the third-worst percentage on Chicago’s roster. The second-year forward went 0-of-8 shooting in the Sky’s first matchup against New York, which ended in a 99-74 defeat on May 22.

Reese answered the call on Tuesday, going 8-of-13 for 17 points in Chicago’s 85-66 loss in front of 16,081 fans at Barclays Center. She made her first three-point basket since the season opener and added 11 rebounds and three assists.

Angel Reese made WNBA history

Per the WNBA, Reese made history on Tuesday night, becoming the fastest player to earn 30 double-doubles in a career. It took Reese 42 games to earn that distinction, five fewer games than it took Tina Charles to earn 30 double-doubles.

The Chicago Sky need the team to help Reese

For her efforts in the loss, the Sky named Reese their Player of the Game.

Unfortunately for Chicago, the team didn’t help Reese out to make it a competitive contest between a now 2-6 Sky team and an undefeated (9-0) Liberty team that is defending a WNBA title.

Chicago shot 42.4% on the night and made 26.1% of their three-point attempts. The Sky turned the ball over 22 times, 15 coming in the first half.

Chicago’s next game will be on the road on Friday when they face the Atlanta Dream.

The Chicago Sky needed Hailey Van Lith and Angel Reese to step up on offense after the team announced that Courtney Vandersloot would miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL during Chicago’s 79-52 loss to the Indian Fever on Saturday.

Rachel Banham filled in as a starter for Vandersloot during Chicago’s contest against the New York Liberty on Tuesday night. Banham went 1-of-6 shooting for three points in the Sky’s 85-66 loss to the Liberty in front of 16,081 fans at Barclays Center.

A better night for Angel Reese

Reese entered the game making under 31% of her shots. She had a better game on offense, going 8-of-13 and 1-of-3 from beyond the arc to score 17 points against New York. She added 11 rebounds, three assists, and two steals, but had five turnovers in the loss.

Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in the 2025 draft, did not have a good night shooting. She went 1-of-5 on the night, scoring five total points and adding two assists and a steal during her 16 minutes on the court.

If the Chicago Sky believe in patience and building through the draft, the team will use the remainder of the season to develop their young core of Hailey Van Lith, Angel Reese, and Kamila Cardoso.

Heading into the season, the plan for the Sky was to have Van Lith learn behind veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot. Unfortunately, Vandersloot suffered a season-ending ACL tear during Chicago’s 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday night.

There are concerns that Van Lith isn’t ready to lead Chicago’s offense, and quite frankly, Reese can’t pick up enough of the offensive slack as a point forward in head coach Tyler Marsh’s scheme. Reese and Van Lith are shooting worse than 31% this season, and make up two of the team’s three worst shooters through seven games.

Should the Chicago Sky make a trade after losing Courtney Vandersloot

Asking both players to be in the starting lineup is a disaster for the 2-5 Sky, and reporter Karli Bell suggested that Chicago would likely have to trade away Reese or Cardoso to give the team a suitable fix for Vandersloot this season.

“If the Sky wanted to go and get another point guard quickly, this (trading Reese or Cardoso) is the fastest way to do it without taking a salary hit,” Bell wrote. “Both Reese & Cardoso are big names that draw in the fans and are absolutely big trade capital for the Sky. If you were to trade either of them, it could be a 2-for-1 type of trade: Cardoso or Reese for two guards or a guard and a wing.”

Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese is racking up the trophy case in the early stages of her professional basketball career. In 2024, Reese made the WNBA All-Rookie Team, had an All-Star appearance, and was the league’s rebounding leader.

Reese won a championship in the Unrivaled league as a member of Rose BC earlier this year, earning the Unrivaled’s Defensive Player of the Year award for her efforts on the campaign.

The award recognizes the best and most successful female athlete from the previous year. Reese won the award for 2023 and 2024. Tennis star Serena Williams has won the award the most with 16 wins.

BET clearly wanted to give Reese her flowers for being a vocal proponent of the WNBA and women’s rights, while she has a unique talent at recording rebounds both on defense, offense, and from her own misses on layups.

Reese has struggled on offense to begin the season. She’s making just 31.1% of her layups. She enters the Sky’s matchup on Tuesday against the New York Liberty averaging 9.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists. and 1.6 steals per contest.

BET received backlash for giving the award to Reese

Fans on social media were confused about how Reese won the award because of issues with her sportsmanship and overall play in the WNBA. BET received backlash online for giving the award to Reese.

“Sportswoman and sportsmanship,” asked a fan. “She would be last in sportsmanship. Great effort, resilience incredible. Atrocious sportsmanship. This award is not for her. She could when the opposite of it.”

“A’ja or Phee not playing? People wonder why nobody watch the BET awards,” wrote a fan who believes A’ja Wilson, the best player in the WNBA, deserved the award before Reese.

Second-year power forward Angel Reese entered the Chicago Sky‘s contest against the Indiana Fever on Saturday making just 31.5% of her layups. That percentage went down during the Sky’s 79-52 loss to the Fever in front of 19,496 fans at the United Center.

Reese scored a total of four points in the contest on 2-of-7 shooting. She added two assists, 12 rebounds, and three turnovers to her stat sheet.

Angel Reese hasn’t been attempting enough 3s

Unlike what head coach Tyler Marsh believed Reese would do more of in 2025, the former LSU standout did not attempt a three-point shot against Indiana. Her last three-point attempt came on May 25 when she missed the shot during Chicago’s 91-78 loss to the LA Sparks.

Reese obviously feels more at home trying to score from short range. Ironically, the player Marsh wanted to try out at point forward this season has a better shooting percentage of 33.3% from three-point range than she does on layups.

Per shotcreator.com, Reese’s layup percentage fell to 31.1% following the lopsided loss to the Fever. She’s shooting 30.9% from the field, meaning her best shot this season has been from beyond the arc.

The Chicago Sky need fewer layup misses and more made 3s

Those percentages are something Reese should keep in mind before the Sky’s contest on Tuesday night against the New York Liberty, a team that Reese went 0-for-8 shooting during their last meeting on May 22.

The Sky lost Courtney Vandersloot for the season due to an ACL injury, causing more problems for the team’s perimeter. Maybe Reese could try more shots from the outside, seeing as how her attempts from the post aren’t going in either.

At this point, she has nothing to lose.

Chicago didn’t want to say anything about an ACL injury in the postgame, hoping their veteran leader would return to the court this season.

Per an announcement by the Sky Sunday night, Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury.

“Courtney Vandersloot underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed a right torn anterior crucial ligament (ACL), an injury she sustained in the June 7th game against Indiana. Second-year forward Angel Reese took to Instagram on Sunday night to support her teammate following the announcement.

“Love you 22,” Reese wrote.

The Chicago Sky’s offense is in trouble

Vandersloot was a key part of the Sky’s offense and defense. Now, Chicago will rely on rookie Hailey Van Lith to take over for Vandersloot at point guard.

Reese knew how hard of an adjustment Van Lith would have in the WNBA this season and wanted to be a big sister to her former LSU teammate this spring and summer.

Van Lith and Reese have been two of Chicago’s three worst shooters this season. Now they’re set to be in the starting lineup with an ungodly shooting percentage. Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in the 2025 draft, is shooting 29.4%. Reese is making 30.9% of her attempts.

Caitlin Clark wasn’t on the court, but the Indiana Fever looked a lot like they did in the season opener by demolishing Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky 79-52 on Saturday night in front of 19,496 fans at the United Center.

Clark led the Fever to a 93-58 win over the Sky on May 17, but was ruled out of Saturday night’s game due to a quad injury. Both teams were without their best point guard for most of the night, as Sky PG Courtney Vandersloot played five minutes before exiting the game with a knee injury.

A bad night for the Chicago Sky

Reese and the Chicago offense struggled without Vandersloot. Rookie Hailey Van Lith took over at point guard, going 2-of-5 from the field and scoring seven total points. She added two rebounds, no assists, one steal, one block, and three turnovers.

Reese’s struggles shooting continued. The second-year power forward went 2-of-7 shooting and scored four total points. She added 12 rebounds (seven on defense), two assists, and three turnovers. She was a minus-20 on the court.

Tyler Marsh: The Sky need to be better for Angel Reese

Following the game, head coach Tyler Marsh was asked about Reese’s performance against Indiana. Marsh suggested that Reese wasn’t a problem on the court and that the team needed to do more to help the defending WNBA rebounding champion on the court.

“I don’t think Angel struggled tonight, I think we struggled as a team, Marsh said. “It’s not about Angel being better for us, it’s us being better for Angel.”

The stats in this game and for the season say otherwise.

Chicago’s offense was embarrassed in their first meeting against the Fever this season when they shot 29.1%. The Sky shot 32.1% from the floor and only 20% from beyond the arc.

Marsh stressed after the season opener that such shooting wouldn’t happen again. Right now, the Sky are struggling to play offense against teams not named the Dallas Wings. It’s who this team is right now.

Chicago’s next game is against the New York Liberty on Tuesday. The Liberty won the first matchup between the two teams 99-74 on May 22, when Reese went 0-of-8 shooting and the Sky shot 36.2%.

Ticket resellers are certainly ot happy with what has transpired in the last two weeks leading up to the Chicago Sky‘s matchup against the Indiana Fever Saturday at 7 p.m. CST.

The game was moved from the Sky’s home site, Wintrust Arena, to the United Center in anticipation of another edition of the rivalry between Sky forward Angel Reese and Fever point guard Caitlin Clark.

Unfortunately, Clark suffered a quad injury and has missed three games in a row. She didn’t want to rush back in time to play Reese and the Sky, saying it “wasn’t worth it” to jeopardize her health.

Fever head coach Stephanie White won’t be at the game either, missing the contest for personal reasons. Assistant coach Austin Kelly will fill in for White, per the Indy Star.

Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever tickets cost less than a coffee

On May 27, reports surfaced that ticket prices for the Sky-Fever game plunged 71% in anticipation of Clark missing the contest. Following the update that the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year would miss the contest, prices for a ticket at the 20,917-capacity stadium plummeted to as low as $3.

Before her rookie campaign in 2024, Reese credited herself for growing the league’s popularity. However, many fans on social media blamed Reese’s struggles to begin the season as the reason ticket values dropped so low now that Clark isn’t at the game.

The proof seems pretty clear at this point that Clark was the main draw for Saturday night’s game.

The two had an epic moment in the season opener on May 17 when Clark committed a Flagrant 1 foul on Reese as the second-year Sky forward attempted a layup. Reese’s response to Clark earned a technical.

Caitlin Clark on the Chicago Sky: Not worth it

Unfortunately for WNBA fans, the Fever announced that Clark will miss Saturday night’s game due to a quad injury, which caused ticket prices to plummet for the contest.

Per the Associated Press, Clark said she’s made progress in recovering from the injury. She gave a little bulletin board material to Reese and the Sky by saying that it wasn’t “worth it” to rush back to play her budding WNBA rival.

“I’m not going to rush coming back,” Clark said. “It’s just not worth it. But after this weekend, I’ll be re-evaluated and we’ll have a better idea.”

How will Angel Reese react to the snub?

Evidently, Clark didn’t feel returning a little early for the game against Reese and the Sky was worth risking further injury.

Since Clark joined the Fever as the No. 1 pick in 2024, Indiana has a 4-1 record against the Sky. Indiana has a 1-2 record during the period Clark has been sidelined due to injury.

Saturday will be one of the better chances the Sky have of beating Indiana this season, but a would-be victory won’t taste as sweet to Reese.

The Sky are much more of a high-profile team than the team she spent her entire career with before joining Chicago in the offseason. The Washington Mystics selected Atkins with the No. 7 pick in the 2018 draft.

Not only is Chicago a bigger city, but the team has Angel Reese on the roster, and her celebrity grabs attention, both good and bad, from the fan base and people in general. Some of the comments fans leave about Reese and the Sky are… insane.

Atikins had a slow start to the season, scoring 28 points in the first three games. She went off in the last three games, scoring 21 points against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, 17 against the Wings on Thursday, and a team-high 26 points against Dallas on Saturday.

Ariel Atkins believes the offense is finding its groove

Atkins believes the Sky are beginning to get into their groove on offense.

“Just getting our chemistry, you can kind of see we’re kind of knowing where each other is going to be,” Atkins said of the offense starting to click. “You can kind of see the passes are a little crisper, because you kind of know where the person is going to be. It’s a lot less fumbling and a lot less questioning. We’re figuring out each other, and we’re building that chemistry.”

Chicago needs the fan base to be insane on Saturday when they host the Fever. Even without Clark, ESPN analytics gives Indiana a 57.6% chance of winning Game 2 in the season series.

No one on the Chicago Sky is going to need the team’s break until Saturday’s game against the Indiana Fever at the United Center more than Hailey Van Lith. The Sky have a week off in their schedule following their 94-83 win over the Dallas Wings at College Park Center.

Saturday’s game in Arlington, Texas, was a homecoming for Van Lith, who spent her final season in college playing for TCU. The Horned Frogs won the Big 12 championship and made it to the Elite Eight before being knocked off by Texas.

The No. 11 pick in the 2025 draft played 10 minutes against the Wings, going 0-of-2 shooting but adding four rebounds and an assist for Chicago.

Hailey Van Lith is exhausted

Van Lith hasn’t had much time off between playing in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, college basketball for TCU, and beginning her career as a rookie for the Sky. She’s appeared in four of Chicago’s six games as she deals with an ankle injury she suffered in the preseason.

Per Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times, Van Lith is “exhausted.” Van Lith believes the cause of the ankle injury is bodily fatigue. She plans to continued playing through the weariness to help the SKy.

“My body will definitely need rest at the end of the year, but until that time comes, I’m 100%. I’ll run through a wall,” Van Lith told Greenberg. “I think this team and myself can do something special, so I’m definitely not going to let that opportunity go by.”

The Sky drafted Van Lith to come learn from and come off the bench to relieve veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot. Van Lith is averaging 2.5 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 rebounds per contest on 9.3 minutes per game. She’s made no three-point shots and is shooting 25% from the field this season.

No doubt, her numbers are hurting due to the fatigue.

Whatever the Chicago Sky want Van Lith to do

Van Lith understands her role with the Sky might be limited in her rookie season, but she’s ready to do whatever head coach Tyler Marsh asks.

“Whatever my role is at the moment, I don’t feel bound to it,” Van Lith said. “Whatever my role may be every game, it doesn’t change how I feel about what type of player I am. I know my team values me and that things change at the drop of a hat, and I’m going to be ready for whatever they need me to be.

“But I don’t care either way. I think when you get caught up in caring about things like that is when you become an emotional roller coaster.”

Hopefully, some time off this week will help Van Lith before a 10-game month in June.

Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese entered Saturday night’s matchup against the Dallas Wings with shooting 31.3% through the first five games of the regular season.

Reese went 4-of-13 shooting (contributing as many made baskets as turnovers) for 14 points in the Sky’s 94-83 win over the Wings in front of 6,251 fans at College Park Center.

Reese was helpful in other areas, adding nine rebounds (five on defense), two assists, and three steals. Chicago as a whole shot 41.1% on the night. Ariel Atkins led the Sky with 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, with four made three-point attempts.

Before the game, Reese told the media that rebounding is how she’s getting her points. She wants to do whatever it takes to help Chicago win games. The team is now 2-4 following their second straight win, both coming against a 1-6 Dallas team.

Angel Reese had a rude response to a reporter

Per Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times, a reporter asked Reese about her shooting problems. Reese had a rude response, refusing to answer the question and turning her head away from the questioner.

“Asked about her shooting woes, she just turned her head from an inquirer and awaited a different question from somebody else,” Greenberg wrote.

That wasn’t the only time Reese showed frustration when it came to her shortcomings on offense. She “pounded the ball” into the basketball court after a missed shot in the second half.

“But Reese’s rough go at putting the ball in the hole is an ongoing issue,” Greenberg wrote. “There are moments like the one after she missed her first shot attempt of the third quarter from in close. After a whistle, she pounded the ball to the court, turned and started the other way, then thought better of it, retrieved the ball and shot a practice layup.

“Let the record show she made it. Clearly, though, it’s frustrating for her at times.”

The Chicago Sky can’t depend on Reese for offensive help

Reese struggles with shooting has had head coach Tyler Marsh alter some of the scheme during the last week.

Marsh wanted Reese to handle the ball more as a point forward this season. He also wanted her to attempt more three-point shots to help open up opportunities for the rest of the team.

While the increased ball handling has led to her leading the team in turnovers, Reese hasn’t attempted a shot from beyond the arc since May 25, when she missed her three-point attempt in Chicago’s 91-78 loss to the LA Sparks.

She’s 1-for-3 on three-point attempts this season. Until she masters shots from closer range, the three-point shot won’t be a threat from the second-year post player.

The Chicago Sky earned a much-needed first win of the season in a 97-92 triumph over the Dallas Wings in front of 9,025 fans at Wintrust Arena. As a team, the Sky had an impressive night on offense, making 46.8% of their shot attempts and 41.7% from beyond the arc.

Kamila Cardoso led Chicago with 23 points. The second-year center’s play was much needed, because fellow big Angel Reese had an off night shooting. She went 2-of-6 from the field and committed as many turnovers as made baskets.

Following the game, Sky coach Tyler Marsh praised Reese for doing the dirty work in other facets of the game. While she contributed only six points, the 2024 No. 7 pick added nine rebounds (five on defense) and five assists.

Chicago Sky coach praises Angel Reese for “huge rebounds”

Marsh credited Reese’s rebounding skills for helping Chicago improve to 1-4.

“I think that’s who Angel is–in the best way,” Marsh said when asked about Reese helping the team with plays that aren’t tallied on a stat sheet. “I think that’s what her skillset allows her to be, that we shouldn’t just look at her as a rebounder or just as a scorer.

“There’s so many different things that she can do on a court that helps a team win. And even though shots weren’t falling for her tonight, she had five assists, she had huge rebounds down the stretch. And that’s the kind of versatility that we see in her. And she’s embraced it so far.”

A rough start to the season shooting

Through five games, Reese has made 31.3% of her shot attempts. She’s averaging 9.2 points, 2.8 assists, and 13 rebounds per contest. Until she starts making baskets, the Sky are going to depend on Reese to rebound and play elite defense. 

Reese will have another opportunity to progress in Marsh’s offense when the Sky take on the Wings in Dallas on Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST.

The post ‘Huge rebounds’: Chicago Sky coach defends Angel Reese’s poor shooting night appeared first on ChiCitySports.

The Chicago Sky enters Thursday night’s matchup against the Dallas Wings looking to earn their first victory of the season. Much has gone wrong for the Sky during their 0-4 start to 2025.

The offense was sluggish in the first three contests, failing to score 80 points until they were defeated 94-89 by the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night. The defense, especially around the perimeter, has been porous.

One of the main issues on offense has been ball control. The Sky lead the league in turnovers per game at 18.3 per contest. Angel Reese is the main culprit, averaging 4.3 turnovers per game.

Angel Reese has a turnover problem

As Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune points out, Reese and Kia Nurse are the only starters on the team averaging more turnovers than assists.

“The Sky are the most mistake-prone team in the WNBA,” Poe wrote. “They average 19 turnovers per game and give up 19.8 points off those errors. Only four Sky players — Courtney Vandersloot, Kamilla Cardoso, Ariel Atkins and Hailey Van Lith, who has played limited minutes because of injury — are averaging more assists than turnovers.”

Reese is averaging nearly twice as many turnovers as assists, as she averages 2.3 assists per night.

Are the Chicago Sky comfortable with the new offense?

Poe thinks the reason for the unusual number of turnovers is that players are not comfortable with first-year head coach Tyler Marsh’s system.

“But much of the Sky’s turnover problem seems to reflect a teamwide discomfort within the offensive system,” Poe wrote. “The Sky are one of the fastest-paced teams in the league, but this insistence on pushing the pace often leads to miscalculated passes up the court that squander transition opportunities before they begin.”

Reese is being asked to take on a new role in the offense. She’s playing more point forward, a task that appears to be a burden for the second-year player in the early season.

Chicago will have to decide if the early troubles are growing pains or if they need to adjust their play to better fit Reese’s limited talents (at least for now).

Poe thinks the nature of the Sky’s offense will naturally cause turnovers to happen, but the team can manage to win games if they keep that number down to 14 or fewer per contest.

Given that Reese is averaging 31% shooting, 2.3 assists, and 4.3 turnovers per game, it might be time for the Sky to reconsider putting and keeping the six-foot-three, 165 forward in the post.

Hours before the Chicago Sky lost 94-89 to the Phoenix Mercury, the WNBA released its findings on the investigation into an alleged racial incident between an Indiana Fever fan directed towards Angel Reese on May 17 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The league found no “substantiated” evidence of hateful speech directed towards Reese.

The WNBA announced on May 18 that they were looking into the incident. Reece responded by saying that it is “tough” for her to hear hateful comments during WNBA games.

Following the release of the WNBA’s findings Tuesday, the league and media members following the Sky have received harsh criticism for how they handled the investigation and the aftermath.

Did the WNBA start a “racial war” with Angel Reese investigation?

On X, Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports (a well-documented fan of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever) called out ESPN for running with the story and accused the league of creating a “racial war” based on hearsay.

“Maybe wait next time before creating a racial war based on angry tik toks from Chicago Sky/Angel trolls who weren’t even at the game,” Portnoy wrote. “Honestly one of the worst mismanagements of Pr I’ve ever seen.”

Jackson Thompson of Fox News pointed out that Sky and Mercury beat reporters for not asking Reese about the results of the league investigation before or after Tuesday night’s game.

“During the Chicago Sky’s postgame press conference on Tuesday night after a 94-89 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, Sky star Angel Reese was not questioned about the WNBA investigation that could not substantiate claims of hateful comments reportedly toward her,” Thompson wrote.

Chicago Sky’s PR team has been unhelpful with reporters

In defense of the media, Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote last week that Chicago’s PR team has shot down reporters’ questions to Reese on the subject. Following the Sky’s loss to the LA Sparks on Sunday, Reese shot down a beat reporter’s question on a topic outside of basketball, saying that she wanted to stick to the game in postgame interviews.

Those covering the Sky should have the opportunity to ask Reese about the WNBA’s findings before or after a practice session. It’s an important question, and Reese should have an opportunity to voice her perspective on the situation.

The Sky’s PR team will have plenty of time to coach Reese on the answer.

Regardless of the league’s findings on the incident at Gainbridge Fieldhouse that came from “relevant fans” (what does that mean?), it doesn’t take long to type Angel Reese’s name on X or Google before one comes across racist sentiment.

The Chicago Sky are set to play the Dallas Wings on Thursday night at the Wintrust Arena to attempt their first win of the regular season. The Sky suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night when they blew a 16-point lead in front of 8,818 fans at PHX Arena.

Chicago had its best game offensively of the season in the 94-89 loss, but the team still lost the turnover battle 16-9.

A bumpy ride to begin the season was expected, given a contest on the road against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever and then a turnaround game at home against the defending champion New York Liberty. But a 0-4 start isn’t what the Sky imagined would be their reality entering a must-win two-game stretch against rookie phenom Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings this week.

A disappointing start for the Chicago Sky

Per Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times, Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca called the start to the season “disappointing.”

“It’s been a bit disappointing,” Jeff Pagliocca said. “I don’t think we were expecting things to go this way.”

The Sky added Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, and Ariel Atkins to provide depth and chemistry to the offense that Chicago lacked when Chennedy Carter was the main feature on offense. The Sky have averaged the third-fewest points per game (74.8) and a league-worst 18.3 turnovers per game.

Angel Reese believes the team can win

Pagliocca believes new first-year head coach Tyler Marsh and his staff can turn the Sky’s fortunes around.

“We think we have the pieces here,” Pagliocca said. “I believe a lot in the staff. . . . This group, the continuity as people and as teammates, it’s a non-issue. They’re together. They’re locked in. We just need to play better basketball. We have to execute our stuff and follow the [scouting reports].

“We can always compete harder, but we have people here that care, and I think that’s what’s going to get us out of this hole.”

Following the Sky’s loss on Tuesday night, Reese told the media she and the team are not satisfied. In a locker room full of winners, Chicago is determined to get better.

Those comments have been the norm after all four losses. The Sky need to prove to Pagliocca, and frankly themselves, that they can win when they play a bad Wings team Thursday and Saturday night.

However, she was tied with Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins for having the most turnovers (3) on the Sky. Chicago lost the turnover battle 16-9, an issue that has been a big contributor to an ugly 0-4 start under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh.

Following the game, Reese told the media that the Sky proved they could score. The team’s 89 points were the highest of the season by 10 points. She thinks the defense needs to improve.

“Obviously, we’re not satisfied,” Reese said. “A lot of us are winners. All of us are winners. We want to win.”

Hours before their game against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night, the Chicago Sky learned the WNBA concluded its investigation into an alleged racist comment directed from a fan at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 17 to Angel Reese.

Sky head coach Tyler Marsh said the team became aware of the complaint when the announcement was released by the league. None of the Chicago players mentioned the incident during the postgame after the Indiana Fever defeated the Sky 93-58 in the regular season opener.

The Chicago Sky learn of the WNBA’s decision

The WNBA released a statement on X confirming that the league found nothing to substantiate the claim that a racist or hateful remark was made during the game toward Reese.

“We have investigated the report of racist fan behavior in the vicinity of the court during the May 17, 2025 Chicago Sky at Indiana Fever game,” per the statement. “Based on information gathered to date, including from relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it.

“The WNBA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone and will continue to be vigilant in enforcing our fan code of conduct.”

Angel Reese says what she heard was “tough”

On May 20, Reese said it’s “tough” for her to hear hate speech during games.

“It’s tough, but I have a great support system,” Reese said. “I’m loved by so many people. In the moment it’s hard to hear, but my support system is great. God has protected me in so many different ways. I’ve gone through so many different things in the past couple years of my life, but having the support and love and being part of an organization that really supports me and loves me is (important).”

For now, the league is claiming that did not occur on May 17.

The Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever had plenty of fireworks during their matchup on May 17. The Fever wound up winning the contest 93-58 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Angel Reese recorded a double-double. Caitlin Clark earned a triple-double. But it was Clark’s flagrant 1 foul on Reese that caused headlines in the Fever’s route in the season opener.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark suffered an injury

The heated rivalry between Clark and Reese was expected to ratchet up a notch when the Fever travel to play the Sky at the United Center on June 7. However, Clark suffered a quad injury, and Indiana announced on Monday that Clark was set to miss two weeks, including the Fever’s matchup against Chicago.

Reese and the Sky have been in a funk to start the season, going 0-3 before their Tuesday night game against the Phoenix Mercury. The team has failed to score 80 points in a game, and Reese leads Chicago in turnovers with 19 through the first three games.

With news of Reese struggling and Clark’s injury, ticket prices have plummeted for the June 7 matchup.

Per Front Office Sports and TickPick, prices to see Reese go against a Clark-less Fever have dropped 71% since the announcement of Clark’s injury.

“Clark’s injury has sent get-in ticket prices for the Fever’s rivalry game against the Sky down 71% from $86 to $25, per @TickPick,” FOS posted on X. “The June 7 game was moved to the United Center, the 21,000-seat home of the Chicago Bulls—the largest arena in the NBA.”

The Sky and Fever are set to play three more games after June 7. Chicago will host Indiana one more time when they play on June 27 at the United Center.

WNBA fans who bought tickets for that game will have to hope Clark is 100% by then. It wouldn’t hurt to see Reese and the Sky play cleaner offense and tougher defense before the matchup.

The Chicago Sky moved their June 7 matchup against the Indiana Fever from their home court at Wintrust Arena to the United Center in anticipation of another edition in the budding rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

Fireworks were seen between the two second-year WNBA stars in their regular season opener on May 17 when Clark committed a flagrant 1 against Reese in the third quarter. Reese followed and shouted at Clark as she walked to the Fever bench.

Indiana wound up winning the contest 93-58.

Chicago was hoping for a better result in their rematch against the Fever on June 7.

That might happen, but Clark will not be on the court for Indiana in the matchup.

Caitlin Clark will not play the Chicago Sky on June 7

Per a statement by the Fever on Memorial Day, Clark suffered a quad injury and will not play for the next two weeks, which includes their June 7 contest against the Sky at the United Center.

No Angel Reese-Clark rematch at the United Center

The news is bad for WNBA fans hoping for an exciting rematch between Reese and Clark. Many fans think the WNBA will have lower ratings until Clark returns from the injury.

Clark’s injury is certainly bad news for the league and the contest on June 7. The United Center, which has a capacity of 23,500, won’t be filled to watch Reese and the Sky go against a Clark-less Fever team.

While the Chicago Sky made progress in their third game of the year on offense by finishing Sunday’s contest with a shooting percentage of 46.4%, the team could not finish another contest within 10 points of their opponent.

The Sky led the league with a minus-60 point differential through two games. Chicago made that 73 with a 91-78 loss to the LA Sparks in front of 11,422 fans at crypto.com Arena.

Following the game, Angel Reese told the media that the team was not happy or satisfied with the outcome. She knows the team has a long way to develop if they want to play competitive basketball in the regular season, much less worry about the playoffs.

One of the Sky’s biggest issues on Sunday was turnovers. Reese accounted for four of Chicago’s 17 turnovers against the Sparks.

Elizabeth Williams: Turnovers are killing us

During her press conference, Elizabeth Williams said turnovers and defense killed the Sky’s chances of winning their first game of the season on Sunday.

“I thought we were a little more disruptive today than we’ve been in the last couple of games, but we did let their runs go on too long,” Williams said. “I think that’s what ultimately hurt us outside of turnovers.”

With Reese sitting beside her, nodding, Williams answered a question about the Sky’s biggest challenge on the court by reiterating that turnovers are hurting the offense.

“I think we have to offensively just take care of the ball,” Williams said. “Value possessions. Move it. When we get good possessions, we’re scoring off them.”

Angel Reese is a turnover machine for the Chicago Sky

The Sky are averaging 19 turnovers per contest. Reese is committing the most turnovers for Chicago at 4.7 a game, more than double Courtney Vandersloot’s 2.3 turnovers per game, the second most on the team.

The Sky have asked Reese to play more point forward this season. She has seen her turnover rate more than double from 2024, when she averaged 2.2 turnovers per game.

Reese’s turnover issue is clearly holding Chicago back, and Williams understands it must be fixed quickly if the team has any chance of winning games, let alone scoring 80 points for the first time in 2025.

The Chicago Sky entered Sunday’s matchup against the LA Sparks having made WNBA history by being the first team to lose its first two games of the regular season by a point differential of -60. On Sunday, the Sky made incremental progress in a 91-78 loss to the Sparks in front of 11,422 fans at crypto.com Arena.

The Sky’s offense shot much better, 46.4% from the floor, the first time the team made more than 37% of their attempts. However, the team made just 20% of their three-point shots.

Reese was a -14 on the floor and created four turnovers, but her 13 points were a team-high against the Sparks. She added 12 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Chicago named her their Player of the Game for her efforts in claiming another double-double.

Angel Reese: “A step forward”

Following the game, Reese suggested that losing by just 13 points to LA was a “step forward” for Chicago. But the team will be okay if they continue to iron out problems.

“It was a step forward… It’s tough losing three in a row, but I think we’ve got to stay together and continue to work on the things that we need to work on,” Reese said. “I think we’ll be alright.”

The Sky’s offense continued to have issues with turnovers. They lost the turnover battle 17-11. Those turnovers cost Chicago a chance to hit the 80-point threshold for the first time all season.

The Chicago Sky are not happy

Reese believes veteran leadership on the Sky will help the team get over their slump, but she said the locker room isn’t happy sitting at 0-3.

“I mean we have (Ariel Atkins) (Courtney Vandersloot), (Kia Nurse), they’ve been in this league for a while and they know what it takes to win and get over this hump,” Reese said. “We’re not happy. Obviously, we’re not satisfied at all. We’re hungry for a win.“

The Sky will have an opportunity to earn their first win on Tuesday when they travel to play the Phoenix Mercury. Per ESPN analytics, Chicago has a 31.6% chance of defeating the Mercury.

The Chicago Sky are looking to put another cold shooting night behind them when they play the LA Sparks at 5 p.m. CST on Sunday. The Sky shot just 36.2% in a 99-74 loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday night at Wintrust Arena.

Second-year power forward Angel Reese and rookie Hailey Van Lith combined to go 0-of-12 shooting. All six of their points during the loss came from the free-throw line.

Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in the draft, is shooting 33.3% from the field through the Sky’s first two games, both blowout losses to the Indiana Fever and Liberty.

It remains to be seen if she can improve her stats on Sunday.

Chicago Sky could be without Hailey Van Lith on Sunday

Per Karli Bell of Courside KB, Van Lith is questionable to play the Sparks due to an ankle injury. Moriah Jefferson will miss her third contest in a row with a leg injury.

The ankle injury returns?

Van Lith dealt with an ankle injury in the preseason. She was questionable to play the Fever on May 17, but played four minutes off the bench in the Sky’s 93-58 regular-season opening loss. Van Lith was not on the injury report before Chicago’s contest against the Liberty.

The Chicago Sky made plenty of history they’d rather forget in their 99-74 loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday night. The Sky are at -60 in point discrepancy through their first two games in the WNBA, which set a league record.

A shooting percentage of 29.1% against the Indiana Fever and 36.2% against the Liberty played a role in the blowout losses. Angel Reese’s 0-of-8 shooting and five turnovers (Chicago committed 23 turnovers) didn’t help matters in Thursday night’s loss in front of 9,025 fans at Wintrust Arena.

The Chicago Sky’s defense made WNBA history

While offensive woes have been the main story for the Sky in the early season, Chicago’s defense is also to blame for an embarrassing start. Per ESPN and the Associated Press, the Sky’s defense broke a WNBA record for surrendering the most three-point shots to another team in the regular season with 19.

“Led by Natasha Cloud with four 3-pointers and 18 points, the defending champion New York Liberty broke the WNBA regular-season record by making 19 3s in a 99-74 victory over the Chicago Sky on Thursday night,” per the ESPN and AP report.

“Eight of nine Liberty players who attempted a 3-pointer made at least one from deep as the team finished 19-for-34 (56%). The previous team and WNBA highs were 18 3-pointers in a regular-season game. The Las Vegas Aces made 23 3s in a playoff game in 2022.”

Angel Reese wants to make the WNBA’s All-Defensive Team

During the preseason, Reese said her goal for 2025 was to make the WNBA’s All-Defensive Team. Reese created three steals, but she had no blocks and was a -25 on the court against the defending WNBA champs.

During his postgame press conference, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh chalked up the defensive woes to self-inflicted wounds.

“New York imposed their will on us a little bit and took us out of our rhythm,” Marsh said. “That’s a good team, (and) you can’t afford to self-inflict wounds.”

The Sky are set to travel to play the LA Sparks on Sunday and have an opportunity to get their defense back on track. The Sparks are 1-2 and have yet to score 90 points in each of their first three contests in the regular season.

But, Chicago has yet to score 80.

The Chicago Sky broke a WNBA record for having the worst point discrepancy through two games at -60.

The Sky’s 29.1% shooting was an issue for Chicago in their 93-58 loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Poor offense and defense caused a 99-74 defeat to the New York Liberty during Thursday night’s home opener in front of 9,025 fans at Wintrust Arena.

Second-year star Angel Reese had a nightmare game on offense. She sent 0-for-8 shooting, with her only two points coming on a pair of free throws. The point forward also committed five turnovers.

Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh made a mistake

Reese went 0-of-5 shooting in the first quarter, but only managed three more shot attempts the rest of the game. During his press conference postgame, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh admitted he needed to do a better job facilitating his bigs like Reese and Cardoso.

“I’ve got to be better at getting the ball into our post players,” Marsh said via CHGO Sky.

Fans on social media agreed that Marsh needed to help his post players.

“Angel and kamilla deserve better Jeff P got Icy Hot and bengay team; they are not playing through their bigs,” posted a fan.

“Well they need to be better at finishing,” wrote another, who thinks Reese needs to take better advantage of her opportunities.

Angel Reese is rushing her shots

The Sky shot poorly against the defending WNBA champs, making 36.2% of their field goals. Marsh sounded like a broken record postgame, saying he doesn’t believe the team will have so many misses during games this season.

He believed part of Reese’s problem on Thursday was that she rushed her attempts.

“Some of (her shots) were rushed,” Marsh said via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times. “That was really it. Angel knows that we have confidence in her. . . . We have constant belief in all our players to make those. It’s not going to be often that we have a ton of misses like this.”

Reese is shooting 22.7% through the first two games of the season. More troubling, she’s made only 37.5% of her free throws. While she’s struggling from the field, Reese is gaining big numbers in rebounding, averaging 14.5 per game, though many are from her own misses.

For the Sky, Reese’s offense and the inefficiency of the offense as a whole is unsustainable, they’re not playing competitive basketball.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it, the Chicago Sky do not look anywhere close to being the playoff contenders they talked about in the preseason.

Following the Sky’s disappointing 93-58 showing against the Indiana Fever on Saturday, Chicago dropped their home opener 99-74  to the New York Liberty in front of 9,025 fans at Wintrust Arena.

Angel Reese had a rough night despite recording 12 rebounds and three steals. She went 0-of-8 shooting, her only two points coming from the free throw line. She was a -25 on the court and committed five turnovers.

Courtney Vandersloot and Rachel Banham were the Sky’s bright points on offense. Vandersloot added 14 points, and Banham led Chicago with 15.

The Chicago Sky made bad history on Thursday night

Per Alexa Philippou of ESPN, the Sky made history on Thursday night. Their -60 point differential in losses to the Fever and Liberty is the first for any team in the first two games of a season.

Angel Reese needs to be involved in the offense

Chicago’s shooting woes have been apparent to begin 2025. The Sky shot 36.2% from the field on Thursday night, a small improvement from 29.1% against the Fever.

The Sky will travel to play the LA Sparks on Sunday at 5 p.m. CST. The Sparks have lost two games in a row and have a 1-2 record. Per ESPN analytics, the Sky have a 36.3% chance of earning their first win on Sunday.

A good goal for the Sky for now would include getting Reese back in rhythm and bringing down the point differential in losses. While Chicago might not be a playoff contender in 2025, there’s no reason why this team cannot compete in the league.

One sore point for the second-year Power Forward is that many of her rebounds come from her own missed shots and layups from the post. It’s a point of contention for Reese and her fan base.

On Thursday night, Reese gave ammunition to her critics on a play in the first quarter against the New York Liberty at Wintrust Arena. Reese awkwardly put up multiple missed shot attempts while rebounding the ball five times before eventually passing to her teammate on the perimeter.

Fans joke about the five-rebound effort

One has to admire the effort and hustle of Reese, but she should have looked for a teammate earlier on the play.

Reese ended the first quarter 0-of-5 shooting with zero points and seven rebounds.

Fans on social media gave Reese a hard time for the rough segment in the post.

“Laying bricks!,” wrote a fan. “5 them boards off her own missed right under the basket.”

“Rebounding ones own missed shots is an interesting way to tally rebounds,” posted another.

“Sad, AR talks a big game but Caitlin Clarke is worth watching,” suggested a poster.

“I see why she gets so many rebounds,” believes a fan.

The Chicago Sky are trying to navigate a few difficult issues this week as they prepare for their home opener against the New York Liberty on Thursday night at Wintrust Arena.

Star power forward Angel Reese is a popular subject this week after a couple of viral incidents happened during Chicago’s regular-season opening loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Reese was embroiled in a heated moment when Caitlin Clark committed a flagrant foul against her in the third quarter.

Following the 93-58 defeat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the WNBA announced that they were investigating a “racial” incident directed from a fan toward Reese.

Given the popularity of Reese, who uses her mega platform on social media and her podcast “Unapologetically Angel” to promote herself and women’s sports, it’s no wonder that reporters flock to the second-year WNBA star to ask questions about all matters related to the Sky.

A media controversy with the Chicago Sky is brewing

In a Tuesday column by Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times about how the conversation around Reese can get ridiculously nasty, Greenberg argued that the Sky have Reese’s back “too much.” He reported that Chicago’s PR deliberately stepped in to overprotect Reese during interviews this week.

“The Sky keep making small decisions that suggest the entire organization, from top to bottom, should avail itself of media training,” Greenberg wrote. “In Indianapolis, a local reporter attempted to ask Reese a perfectly reasonable follow-up question about the play involving Clark’s flagrant foul, but a PR staffer butted in with, ‘She already answered this question,’ shutting it down.

“Back in Deerfield on Tuesday, Reese was asked if she’d shared any details with the league about anything she might have heard from the crowd, prompting a PR staffer to leap needlessly to her rescue there, too. It happened two more times Tuesday in response to questions that were standard operating procedure and entirely fair. Why in the world? This isn’t how most professional sports teams do things.”

Angel Reese is media savvy

Greenberg also called out general manager Jeff Pagliocca for refusing to answer questions, suggesting that his silence didn’t help Reese.

The Sky’s brass has a real problem on its hands. All of this drama is from Game 1 of the regular season. Chicago has 39 more games to play before hopefully advancing to the postseason.

As the WNBA grows (thanks in large part to Reese), the Sky will need to figure out how to let reporters do their jobs and trust Reese to handle the moment. With a podcast subscriber base of over 141,000, Reese is a player in the media. She can handle the publicity.

On Friday, the WNBA and Chicago Sky released statements that there is “no space for hate” in women’s basketball. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports apparently does not agree with the WNBA on that stance.

Portnoy is an avid Caitlin Clark fan. He was courtside at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the Indiana Fever’s 93-58 demolition of the Sky on Saturday, and let the world know the Sky went into the locker room for the national anthem.

A viral moment broke out between Sky power forward Angel Reese and Clark after the Fever point guard committed a flagrant foul on Reese with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter.

Following the game, the WNBA announced they were investigating a hateful incident from a fan at the game directed towards Reese.

Dave Portnoy went on a “hate” rant about Chicago Sky star

With the context that the WNBA is investigating a “racial” and “hateful’ incident from Saturday, Portnoy took to social media on Tuesday to argue why Clark fans should “hate” Reese.

“Caitlin fans have every reason to hate Angel Reese,” Portnoy said via a transcription from Ryan Morik of Fox News. “Fever fans, Caitlin fans should hate Angel Reese. Angel Reese has been nothing but an instigator, agitator and (expletive) basically for the last couple years.

“Angel Reese has doubled down, tripled down, quadrupled down and has built her persona as Caitlin’s rival. … It’s one thing after another, after another. … The jealousy that Angel Reese has towards her and has consistently shown makes Caitlin fans hate her. … When you have one player that’s constantly poking at you, constantly degrading you, yes, you’re going to (expletive) hate her.”

Reese recorded a double-double on Saturday, scoring 12 points and 17 rebounds. Clark earned a triple-double, scoring 20 points, adding 10 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Portnoy claimed ESPN is being purposefully decisive

Portnoy thinks ESPN has been decisive on the rivalry between Clark and Reese. He called Clark a “superior” basketball athlete.

“I’m sick of ESPN making it a race issue,” Portnoy said. “You have a superior basketball player who constantly has someone below taking shots at them, won’t shut up and then plays the victim. … If [Angel] didn’t have Caitlin, nobody would know who she is. If Caitlin didn’t have Angel, it would be the same popularity for Caitlin.”

One has to disagree with Portnoy’s comments on popularity. The Sky and Fever had record ratings on Saturday in part because of Reese. She adds an exciting element to what has now become a household rivalry in the WNBA.

We all should enjoy this moment between two hardworking athletes, and not hate either player.

ESPN sends the Chicago Sky and Angel Reese a strong rebuke

Following their embarrassing loss to Caitlin Clark and the Fever, ESPN sent a the Sky a strong rebuke in the power rankings, dropping them from No. 9 in the preseason to No. 12.

“The Sky didn’t look good offensively at any point in their 93-58 loss at Indiana on Saturday, shooting 29.1%,” ESPN’s Michael Voepel wrote. “But there is a new coach in Tyler Marsh and a new backcourt in Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse and Ariel Atkins.

“Plus, the Fever played well. We will see how Chicago responds to such a dispiriting opener.”

The Sky are set to play their home opener against the defending champion New York Liberty on Thursday night. Vandersloot has an opportunity to go against her former team at Wintrust Arena, though many Chicago fans hope Marsh gives extra minutes to her understudy, rookie Hailey Van Lith.

The Chicago Sky don’t have much time to feel sorry for themselves after a 93-58 beatdown by the Indiana Fever Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Sky are set to host the defending champion New York Liberty (who beat A’Ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces Saturday) at Wintrust Arena on Thursday night.

Following Tuesday’s practice, Angel Reese addressed the WNBA’s investigation into an allegation of a “racial” incident from a fan at the Fever game directed at the second-year power forward.

Angel Reese: Hate speech has no place in the WNBA

Per Jason Lieser with the Chicago Sun-Times, Reese said the Sky and the league have been communicating with Reese about the investigation. The league considers the incident to be a “priority.”

“They preach no hate speech, and the women in this league know that and know there’s no space for that,” Reese said. “Every player in this league deserves to be treated with respect and want to come to work and have a great environment to work at. They’ve done a great job putting that out and are obviously just going to respond as needed.”

Fever point guard Caitlin Clark told the media on Monday that even though she didn’t hear any racial comments at the game, that doesn’t mean the incident didn’t occur. Clark said those comments have no place in the WNBA.

The Chicago Sky have been supportive

Reese said hearing hate speech during games is “tough,” but said she feels supported by the people around her and God.

“It’s tough, but I have a great support system,” Reese said. “I’m loved by so many people. In the moment it’s hard to hear, but my support system is great. God has protected me in so many different ways. I’ve gone through so many different things in the past couple years of my life, but having the support and love and being part of an organization that really supports me and loves me is (important).”

The atmosphere for Reese should be more favorable during the Sky’s home opener on Thursday. Hopefully, Chicago can focus on just basketball when they play the Liberty.

In training camp, the Chicago Sky revealed their plan to have rookie Hailey Van Lith learn behind veteran and 2024 WNBA champion Courtney Vandersloot this season.

Van Lith had her struggles in the Sky’s first preseason game against WNBA competition, but went 3-of-4 shooting (including two three-point shots) for eight points in Chicago’s preseason finale against the Minnesota Lynx on May 10.

Van Lith didn’t see much action in the regular season opening loss to the Indiana Fever. She received four minutes in garbage time of a 93-58 defeat at Ganbridge Fieldhouse. During those four minutes, Van Lith went 2-for-2 shooting for four points.

Vandersloot had an abysmal performance Saturday, going 2-of-9 shooting for four points and missing all three of her three-point attempts. Some fans on social media wanted Van Lith, the No. 11 pick in the draft, inserted into the game earlier.

The Chicago Sky sent a message with Hailey Van Lith

On Tuesday, the Sky posted a message about their home opener against the New York Liberty on Thursday night. The photo was of Van Lith.

More playing time for Van Lith?

Fans on social media were hoping Van Lith’s promotion might mean the former teammate of Angel Reese at LSU might be featured more than four minutes against Liberty.

“can yall give her more than 4 minutes especially since shes a favorite for your promo and the team desperately needs help,” wrote a fan.

“HVL gonna play this time or is this clickbait?,” asked another.

While Van Lith isn’t likely to replace Vandersloot in the starting lineup on Thursday, Chicago might give her a more pronounced role in the matchup.

Van Lith was an aid to the Sky on offense during her four minutes against the Fever, but she has other parts of her game to work on before she’s featured heavily in a game. She committed one turnover and was a -5 on the court against Indiana in her first-ever regular season game.

The Chicago Sky had a bad shooting day

Reese’s teammates didn’t do her many favors. Chicago shot just 29.1% and 22.2% from beyond the three-point line. Newcomers Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, and Ariel Atkins combined for 19 points, one shy of the 20 Caitlin Clark added for the Fever.

Reese made WNBA history in the first half of the contest. In her rookie season, Reese recorded 446 rebounds, the most ever for a WNBA player in a single season. On Saturday, she became the fastest WNBA player to score 450 points and record 450 rebounds.

Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese boasts personal achievement from loss

Reese posted to her Instagram account on Saturday after the loss, but was silent on X until Monday afternoon. On Monday, she boasted about her rebounding and scoring achievement by reposting TOGETHXR with a gratitude emoji.

Saturday’s matchup between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky lived up to the high drama, as multiple viral incidents happened on and off the court in another addition of the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.

Reese and Clark had another toxic moment when Fever point guard committed a flagrant 1 foul on Reese to keep the Sky power forward from making an easy layup. Reese’s frustration at the foul led to offsetting technicals for her and Aliyah Boston.

Following the game, the WNBA announced they were investigating a racial incident from a fan at Gainbridge Fieldhouse directed towards Reese.

But fireworks happened even before tipoff.

The Chicago Sky did not come out for the national anthem

Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports was at the game and ignited a storm on social media when he posted that Sky went into the locker room after warm-ups and didn’t show when the national anthem was being played.

Some fans in the comments pointed out that it’s typical for some WNBA teams to go into the locker room after warm-ups and return to the floor at the conclusion of the national anthem.

Still, other fans felt the Sky were being disrespectful by not standing while the song was played before the game. A common joke was that Chicago didn’t come out for the matchup either, as the Fever ran the Sky out of the building in a 93-58 rout.

Fans call for a ridiculous boycott of the WNBA and Sky

Some fans think people should refrain from buying tickets to see the Sky or WNBA until Chicago apologizes for the decision.

“Then, give them the same respect. DONT BUY TICKETS FOR THEIR GAMES AND DONT GO TO THEIR GAMES,” posted a fan.

“Will there be any consequences for the Chicago Sky walking off the court and skipping the National Anthem? If not, count me as a FORMER @WNBA fan!,” wrote another.

“Not coming out for the National Anthem. New year, new players, new coach, But the Chicago Sky are still the same team. They have a lousy attitude, players on the Sky team and the coach show what they really are, they will get no respect from me,” wrote one poster.

One fan wanted fines.

“The WNBA better fine and give a last warning to the Chicago Sky for boycotting the national anthem .Just remember where you work .In the USA..If you don’t like things play and coach in another country . As for a flagrant foul..Wow oh wow petty . Grow up ladies,” posted another.

Other fans understand the ridiculous nature of the controversy, noting that the Sky didn’t break protocol or do anything disrespectful by not being on the court for the national anthem.

On Sunday, the WNBA revealed that they were investigating an incident that allegedly occurred between a fan and Chicago Sky power forward Angel Reese during Saturday’s game against the Indiana Fever. The Sky and Fever were playing an intense game that ended in a 93-58 blowout by Indiana at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Per Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, the incident was not in reaction to the drama on a flagrant foul between Fever point guard Caitlin Clark and Reese. The comment was of a “racial” concern.

“Sources with knowledge of the situation say this statement is in response to allegations of racial comments directed at Angel Reese by fan(s) in the crowd,” Costabile posted on X. “It is not in response to the take foul that was upgraded to a flagrant 1.”

The Chicago Sky released a statement

On Sunday night, The Sky’s President and CEO, Adam Fox, released a statement on the team’s X account regarding the WNBA investigation into the racial incident. Chicago sent a powerful statement defending Reese and her Sky teammates in order to create a safe place for female athletes.

“We welcome the WNBA’s investigation of allegations of fan misconduct during our first game of the season,” Fox wrote. “We will do everything in our power to protect Chicago Sky players, and we encourage the league to continue taking meaningful steps to create a safe environment for all WNBA players.”

The Sky warned fans before the season that hateful comments of any kind would be grounds for blocking on social media channels. Unfortunately, in this situation, a person felt emboldened to say it at a game.

Reese only made one of her two free throws off the flagrant, and the Fever wound up routing the Sky 93-58 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Fans reacted to the shove

Fans on social media reacted to the missed call.

“Refs gotta be blind not to see a two handed push from Reese in order to get the rebound,” wrote a fan.

“Reese pushes the fever player in the back out of the way Caitlin Clark points it out to the ref reese then tries to get the layup so Caitlin fouled reese is a dirty player,” posted another.

If only the refs had called the foul on Reese, there might not have been a memorable moment between Clark and Reese during an otherwise boring contest.

Reese is known for making passionate statements and having a strong personality. On Saturday, tensions were high between Reese and her rival Caitlin Clark in the Indiana Fever’s 93-58 win over the Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Clark was called for a flagrant foul on Reese that caused the second-year WNBA player to fall to the floor. Reese was upset, and offsetting technicals were called for Reese and Aliyah Boston in the aftermath of the “basketball play.”

The WNBA is investigating an incident from Saturday

Per Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, the WNBPA announced Sunday that the league is investigating an incident that occurred Saturday between a fan and Reese.

“The WNBPA is aware of reports of hateful comments at yesterday’s game in Indianapolis and supports the WNBA’s current investigation into this matter,” the statement reads.

“Such behavior is unacceptable in our sport. Under the WNBA’S ‘No Space for Hate’ policy, we trust the league to thoroughly investigate and take swift, appropriate action to ensure a safe and
welcoming environment for all.”

Racist language directed at Chicago Sky star Angel Reese

Per Costabile, the incident was not in reaction to the drama between Clark and Reese on the flagrant foul and was of a racist nature.

The Sky planned to block any hateful comments on social media. The Fever should absolutely ban any fan who directed racist language at Reese.

Caitlin Clark appeared surprised at the reaction of Angel Reese to a hard foul during the Chicago Sky‘s contest Saturday against the Indiana Fever. The Fever routed the Sky 93-58 in front of a crowd of 17,274 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

In an otherwise non-competitive regular season opening game, the biggest talking point was a flagrant foul called on Clark with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. Clark claimed nothing was “malicious” about her intent of making Reese earn her points at the free-throw line.

“It’s just a good take foul,” Clark told the ABC TV crew. “You know, either Angel gets a wide-open two points, or we send them to the free-throw line. Nothing malicious about it. It’s just a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that.”

Angel Reese had a viral reaction to Caitlin Clark

Reese fell to the floor as a result of the contact on the foul. The second-year WNBA power forward immediately bounced up to confront Clark, who walked away to the Fever bench. Cameras caught Reese continuing to yell what appeared to be profanities at Clark.

Following the game, Reese said Clark made a “basketball play” and agreed with the decision called by the refs on the floor.

On Instagram, Reese’s teammate, Ariel Atkins, suggested Reese might have gone a little overboard in her reaction to Clark’s play.

Chicago Sky’s Ariel Atkins comments on the controversy

In a response to a highlight of the interaction between Reese and Clark by Houseofhighlights on Instagram, Atkins wrote that hard fouls like the one Clark made do happen. She also believes discourse around the topic could be dangerous.

“Realistically, hard fouls happen,” Atkins wrote. “But the hate is unnecessary and the narrative y’all have built is weird to meand dangerous. Just let them hoop.”

It was immediately unclear what Atkins meant by the “hate” that was unnecessary.

Some spectators believe Reese’s reaction to Clark’s foul happened becasue of the “hate” the former LSU star has for Clark.

The narrative was spun because of how Reese reacted in the heat of the moment.

While Atkins suggested that Reese might have gone too far in her reaction to the hard foul, she wants to protect her teammate from the potential ramifications of those actions. Some fans have definitely taken the drama too far.

Unfortunately, Reese invited the criticism by following Clark around yelling. If Alyiah Boston hadn’t stepped to push Reese from Clark (causing the refs to call offsetting technicals), another hateful and dangerous action might have occured on the court.

Reese only had one assist, made no steals or blocks, and gave up five turnovers in the loss. She was a -20 on the court. Those numbers don’t sound impressive, but newcoming starters Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, and Ariel Atkins combined for just 19 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds.

Saturday’s game was a shock for the Sky, who were shot out of the building by Caitlin Clark and the Fever. Clark was the best player on the court, recording a triple-double on 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. She also recorded two steals and four blocks.

Fans on social media taunted the Sky for making Reese the Player of the Game after she was outplayed by the Fever on Saturday.

“Celebrating a losing effort,” posted a fan.

“Didn’t know we gave out POTG awards for teams that lost by 35,” wrote another.

“On 5-14 shooting. You can’t be serious,” suggested a fan.

“Losing by 35 shouldn’t warrant a play of the game recognition… So basically everyone is getting participation trophies,” believes a poster.

“Y’all still gassing these double doubles while losing by almost 40 as if it means something,” commented another.

Caitlin Clark went 6-for-13 shooting and 4-for-8 on three-point attempts. Her 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists cooked the Sky, who shot 29.1% overall and went 6-for-27 on three-point attempts. Newcomers Courtney Vandersloot and Kia Nurse were virtually non-existent, combining for eight points on 4-of-17 shooting.

Reese, who finished with 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting, 17 rebounds (helping set a WNBA record), one assist, and five turnovers, was clearly frustrated while playing on the losing end against her rival from college. Tensions boiled over when Clark committed a foul on Reese with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter to keep Reese from scoring an easy basket.

Reese fell to the floor and immediately popped up to confront Clark. The officials called Clark for a flagrant foul. Reese and the Fever’s Aliyah Boston were called for technicals that were offset.

On Saturday, the Sky and Fever kicked off the 2025 regular season at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Fever dominated from the start, leading 45-32 at halftime. Reese made WNBA history in the first half, becoming the fastest player in league history to record 450 points and rebounds.

Frustrations for Reese boiled over with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter and the Sky trailing 56-42. Clark committed what appeared to be a hard foul on Reese going for a layup. The force of Clark’s impact put Reese on the hardwood floor.

Reese immediately popped up to confront Clark, and teammates had to separate her from the 2024 No. 1 pick.

Clark received a flagrant foul for decking Reese. Aliyah Boston of the Fever and Reese received offsetting technical fouls for the drama that ensued after the play.

Reese made one of the two free throw opportunities from the flagrant foul.

Reese and Clack have had notable moments in their rivalry. Reese pointed to her ring finger during the 2024 Elite Eight matchup between the Tigers and Hawkeyes.

One would assume there will be some fireworks during postgame pressers.

The Chicago Sky were trailing despite the rebounding

Reese recorded 446 rebounds as a rookie, which broke a league record for the most rebounds in a single season. She averaged 13.1 rebounds per game. Reese was well on her way to smashing her average from 2024.

Despite Reese believing that her rebounding can win championships, the Sky were trailing the Fever 45-32 at halftime. The Sky struggled shooting, averaging just 28.9% shooting and making just 25% of their three-point shots.

Reese went 3-of-8 shooting in the first half, including 1-of-2 from behind the three-point arc. She was a -10 on the court with one assist and two turnovers.

The Chicago Blackhawks sent the Sky a message

Hours before Angel Reese was set to renew her rivalry with Caitlin Clark at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Blackhawks sent a message to the Sky before their season.

While the Blackhawks sent a message of support to their hometown team, many Chicago hockey fans don’t appear to love the Sky. Most posters left negative comments in the replies, and some had to do with Reese.

Chicago Sky released a statement on “mental health” with Angel Reese

The Sky released a statement on X about “mental health” that featured a picture of Reese. Early replies to the post caused Chicago to have to make an unfortunate reaction.

“No Space for Hate,” the Sky posted on X. “We protect our athletes’ mental health on and off the court and stand with our fellow teams in the WNBA as we continue building an inclusive environment in and out of the arena.”

Per the statement, the Sky are continuing a “no space for hate” platform where they plan to block anyone in violation of their policies.

“Last season, the Chicago Sky launched the ‘Post up Positivity, Block the Negativity’ campaign to
stand up to hate,” the statement reads. “We proudly stand with all WNBA teams against offensive, discriminatory, and hateful content. The WNBA aims to inspire and connect people through the power of women’s basketball.

“Our online and in arena communities must be inclusive and safe. There is no space for hate. Any violations of our policies may result in deletion of comments and blocking of accounts across our social media channels. Together we block. Together we win.”

An unfortunate response online

The Sky received racist and homophobic replies to the post, including some that prompted X to place a limited visibility tag on the content. Chicago wound up limiting replies to only accounts that they mention so that their message on “no space for hate” wouldn’t become bogged down with vile commentary.

Unfortunately, it’s clear that the antagonists of Reese’s career that have been abundant since the 2023 national championship aren’t going away anytime soon.

The Chicago Sky are set to unveil their new look offense under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh on Saturday. The Sky will play Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse at 2 p.m. CST on ABC.

Newcomers Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, and Ariel Atkins will make the offense more dynamic than last season, when the Sky predominantly let Chennedy Carter take charge. While Carter led the team in points, Chicago missed the playoffs with a 13-27 record.

Angel Reese primarily played in the post during her rookie season.

The No. 7 pick in the 2024 draft averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds (a league high), and 1.9 assists. Marsh had Reese playing point forward in the Sky’s preseason finale against the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday and wants her to contribute at various places on the floor this year.

Courtney Vandersloot wants Angel Reese to find a new niche

Vandersloot, who won a championship with the Sky in 2021 and spent the last two seasons with the New York Liberty, signed with Chicago in 2025.

The veteran and five-time WNBA All-Star told Jon Greenberg of The Athletic that she wants Reese to make a drastic change to her offensive game from last year, believing that she can do more than rebound to help improve the Sky’s record.

“Angel brings her own sense of dominance in terms of rebounding, and she’s a great screener. She’s a good distributor. So, yeah, we’re trying to figure it out…I think she has to find her niche, especially with another post player (in Kamilla Cardoso),” Vandersloot said. “I think the paint was kind of always hers, and now we have someone else that could dominate in the paint, too.

“So we’re finding ways for them to play off each other. But I think having her on the perimeter is going to be really good for her career. I think she handles the ball really well, which I didn’t know before I came here. She can pass it very well. So she has a lot of other skill sets other than just rebounding and layups. And I think we’ve got to tap into that.”

Will Reese make a drastic change to help the Chicago Sky?

Marsh has made similar statements in the preseason.

What remains to be seen is if Reese takes the advice, especially when she’s challenged by quality play in the WNBA. Her shooting percentage of 39.1 % was not great last season, especially coming from a post player.

Reese said during training camp that she wants to continue cleaning up the glass because “rebounds win championships.”

Reese’s rebounding title didn’t get Chicago to the playoffs in 2024, and hopefully, Vandersloot can help convince Reese to advance other parts of her game this season.

Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese sounds off before Indiana Fever game

The Sky are set to open their regular season against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST on ABC. Reese has been compared to Clark since the 2023 national championship between LSU and Iowa, which the Tigers won.

Their rivalry spilled over to the WNBA in 2024, when Clark was selected with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Per Mike Berman of NBC Chicago, Reese believes she had a “great” rookie season individually, especially when it came to rebounding, but would like to improve in other areas of her game. Despite the many criticisms she faces, Reese said she’s her biggest critic.

“And I think I’ve done a lot of great things – obviously my rookie year I set a lot of records, made some history, had fun at All-Star, did a lot of great things, but if you look back at the same things that were good yesterday, today things aren’t going to be as good. That’s something (LSU head coach) Kim (Mulkey) told me.”

Reese averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game in 2024.

Chicago is expecting Reese to up her assists this season. She played point forward in the Sky’s preseason finale on Saturday against the Minnesota Lynx.

Winning is the biggest thing for Reese

While Reese wants to expand her game, she wants to inflate the win column for Chicago.

“Winning is the biggest thing to me,” Reese said. “Individual accolades, everybody always asks, ‘What do you want to achieve this year, what do you want to achieve this year?’ I want to win. I want to make the playoffs.

“I’ve won at every level, and just being able to be here in this moment with this great team and this great organization, there’s no better time than now.”

Now starts Saturday, when she has a chance to show improvement from 2024 against Clark and the Fever.

“I’ll take the bad guy role, and I’ll continue to take that on and be that for my teammates,” Reese said. “I’ll look back in 20 years and be like, ‘Yeah, the reason why we’re watching women’s basketball is not just because of one person. It’s because of me, too,’ and I want y’all to realize that.”

Data from sportscasting.com shows Reese is having a tremendous impact on the popularity of the WNBA, but her value is vastly behind Clark and Dallas Wing rookie Paige Bueckers.

Clark is the main drive of ticket prices jumping by 125.7% when the Fever on the road to $106.32 compared to all other WNBA teams. Bueckers has made ticket prices jump 68.9% to $79.55 when Dallas in the road.

Angel Reese does have a positive impact

The Sky are third on the list at $56.32 to see Reese play on the road. That number represents a 19.56% increase over the average WNBA team, which isn’t close to the value Clark or Bueckers bring to the WNBA.

Reese has a larger reach for the league than tickets. She is the host a popular podcast “Unapologetically Angel” and has more social media followers than Clark. Reese uses her platform to promote the sport and advocate for better pay for female athletes.

And Reese will be a big draw at 2 p.m. Saturday on ABC when the Sky open their regular season on the road against the Fever.

Chicago relied on Chennedy Carter (now a free agent) to pull the weight of the offense in 2024. The result led to a 13-27 record and no playoff appearance. The makeup of the offense also allowed Angel Reese to break the WNBA’s record for most rebounds in a single season with 446 rebounds, 13.1 per game.

Chicago hopes for a better record in Reese’s second season. Per Kevin Pelton of ESPN, there are “raised expectations” for Reese around the WNBA in 2025.

The Chicago Sky have high expectations in 2025

The Sky believe they have enough juice to make the playoffs. Per ESPN BET, Chicago has a 50-50 shot of finishing with a top-eight record.

Pelton thinks the only downside of the new offense for Reese is that her title as the WNBA’s rebound leader is under threat because Chicago can score more efficiently.

“About the only downside for Reese is that an improved Sky offense could mean fewer rebound opportunities after she joined Yolanda Griffith as just the second player in league history to average at least five offensive rebounds per game last season,” Pelton wrote. “That’s a tradeoff Reese will surely take.”

Angel Reese still wants to be a rebounder

On Monday, Reese said that she plans to hound the glass this season because “rebounds win championships.” She also has her sights set on making the WNBA’s All-Defensive Team in 2025.

Per the results of the Sky’s final preseason game, it could be a challenge for Reese to match the rebounding production she had in her rookie season.

While playing the role of point forward, Reese finished with three rebounds in 25 minutes during the Sky’s 92-87 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday. Five-foot-10, 167-pound guard, Atkins, finished with seven.

“(Indiana head coach Stephanie) White said the Fever was thinking “long-term” about Clark’s status and did not want to risk further injury, so they held her out of the preseason opener against the Washington Mystics,” Pickman wrote. “Clark moved well Saturday, even as at least four Atlanta players guarded her…

“No one with the Fever expressed being overly concerned, but Clark’s injury is worth monitoring as Indiana’s season gets underway.”

Clark said before Saturday’s game that she’s dealing with left quad tightness. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft has no idea how or when she suffered the injury, but she trusts in the Fever’s medical staff to help her rehab.

“Our medical staff has been really helpful, and I feel really good,” Clark said.

The Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever each have 2 on the injury report

The Fever have two players on the injury report. Forward Damiris Dantas is day-to-day with a lower leg injury. Guard Sophie Cunningham is day-to-day with an ankle issue that kept her out of Saturday’s preseason finale.

New Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh has taken great pains to try and develop Angel Reese’s offense in 2025. The second-year WNBA star is being asked to play point forward at times, something that was an adjustment from 2024 when she was asked to primarily play in the post.

Marsh wants the three-point shot to be a bigger part of her arsenal, hoping that open space on offense leads to more points than relying on second-chance points from Reese’s rebounds.

“We don’t want Angel Reese to be just a rebounder because she’s so much more than that,” Marsh said at media day on Monday via Kalem Lumpkins of the Chicago Tribune. “The rebounding will always be there.”

Reese led the league in rebounds last year, averaging 13.1 rebounds per game. She broke the WNBA record for the most rebounds in a single season with 446.

Per CHGO Sky, Reese said she still believes rebounding is her key strength on offense.

Reese called learning her role in Marsh’s system an “adjustment,” and likes how transparent her new head coach has been through training camp.

Reese wants to be a defensive hawk for the Chicago Sky

While Marsh hopes Reese improves her offense, the 2024 All-Star has the goal of earning the WNBA’s All-Defensive team.

Reese was honored with the Defensive Player of the Year Award in the Unrivaled 3X3 basketball league earlier this year. Defense was one of the reasons Reese made the WNBA’s All-Rookie Team last year.

Reese has a big contest coming up where she can flex her defensive skills. Chicago plays its regular season opener against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST on ABC.

New Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh is shaking things up for Angel Reese and the rest of the roster in 2025. The Sky are shifting their offense from a unit that was predominantly centered around Chennedy Carter, currently a free agent with less than a week remaining before the start of the regular season.

The Sky added Courtney Vandersloot, Kia Nurse, and Ariel Atkins in hopes that their three-point shooting can open up spacing for Reese. Chicago had Reese playing point forward during their final preseason contest on Saturday against the Minnesota Lynx.

Angel Reese wants to do “whatever” it takes to win

Per Grant Afseth of Hardwood Heroics, Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca said the team wants to try a new position so she can creatively help her new teammates make plays.

Reese said that she would do “whatever” it takes to help the Sky win.

“I’ve always been a player for the team,” Reese said. “Every team I’ve been on, I’ve done what was needed to win. I don’t care about anything else. I’m doing whatever I need for the team.”

Reese struggled with shooting in the first half of Saturday night’s game, going 0-for-3 shooting, but added three points at the free-throw line. She finished with 10 points on 2-of-8 shooting and missed her only three-point attempt. She added three rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes on the court in Chicago’s 92-87 loss to Minnesota at Target Center.

Reese and the Sky’s offense is a work in progress right now. They play their regular season opener against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 2 p.m. CST on ABC.

The Chicago Sky hope Reese is comfortable in her new role

Reese believes she’s developing better under Marsh in her second year in Chicago. She’s learning not to hesitate and wants to confidently take what the defense gives her.

“I’m just trying to be consistent and confident,” Reese said. “Not trying to do anything I’m not capable of, but also not hesitating like I did sometimes last year. Just taking what’s there.”

Reese will have a big platform on national television to prove to the Sky how far she’s come since her rookie season.

The Chicago Sky finished their three-game preseason schedule on Saturday night with a 92-87 loss to the Minnesota Lynx in front of 7,615 fans at Target Center. The Sky finished 2-1 in the preseason and will next play their regular season opener against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday.

The Sky needed to cut their roster to 12 following their contest against Minnesota. Rookie draft picks Hailey Van Lith and Maddie Westbeld weren’t guaranteed a roster spot, though many assumed Van Lith, the No. 11 pick, would make the team.

Haily Van Lith had an up-and-down preseason

However, Van Lith struggled against Minnesota on Tuesday, scoring three points on 1-of-3 shooting with five assists in 17 minutes. She was unable to beef up her stats until the Lynx put their reserves on the court.

Van Lith played much better on Saturday night, going 3-of-4 shooting (including two made three-point shots). She finished with eight points, three assists, and one rebound in 15 minutes.

Per the Sky, the team waived Morgan Bertsch, Jessika Carer, and Ally Wilson on Sunday, clearing the roster to 12 before the start of the regular season.

The Chicago Sky are expected to keep two draft picks on the roster

Per Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Van Lith and Westbeld are set to make the final roster.

“The Sky make their final cuts to 12 players which all but confirms that Hailey Van Lith and Maddy Westbeld will make the final roster,” Poe wrote. “Both signed rookie scale contracts so no further transactions necessary to make that official.”

Van Lith is expected to learn under Courtney Vandersloot this season, coming off the bench as she develops her craft in the WNBA.

The Chicago Sky finished their preseason with a 92-87 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday night in front of 7,615 fans at Target Center. The Sky split their preseason series with the Lynx and finished with a 2-1 record in May, with their other win coming against the Brazilian national team.

The Sky are now turning their attention to a much-anticipated regular season opener against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Second-year star Angel Reese has been working on improving her offense in new head coach Tyler Marsh’s scheme during training camp.

Angel Reese makes vow before Indiana Fever game

She made a vow before the game, promising to be better than 2024.

“You’ve got to get better every year,” Reese said via the Chicago Sun-Times. “I can’t be the same player as last year. I played well last year and definitively could’ve been better, but you just continue to get better every year, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Reese wasn’t better on Saturday night. She went 2-of-8 shooting (25%) and added three rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes. She was a -1 for the contest and was outrebounded by Kamilla Cardoso, who finished with seven rebounds.

Reese wasn’t helped with Courtney Vandersloot missing the game with a rib injury, as the guard opens up Reese’s path to the basket.

The Chicago Sky believe Reese has potential on offense

Reese missed her only three-point attempt of the night. However, Marsh said he liked Reese’s attempts against the Lynx. He believes Reese showed potential despite poor numbers on Saturday.

“It continues to showcase the versatility that I’ve been talking about with Angel and not putting limitations on who she can be as a player,” Marsh said. “She was all over, and that’s how we want her to be. That’s how we see her potential moving forward.”

Reese only has a week to improve her shooting before taking on the Fever.

The two most prominent figures in the WNBA last season were rookies Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. Both made their mark on the league.

Clark, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft, won WNBA Rookie of the Year. Reese broke the league’s record for rebounds in a single season with 446 rebounds.

Clark’s popularity has brought extra eyeballs to the WNBA. Given her platform by defeating Clark and Iowa in the 2023 national championship, Reese has used her platform to bring attention to the sport and highlight issues such as low pay for female athletes, something she hopes changes during the next collective bargaining agreement.

Caitlin Clark’s agent made a slight by omission

Clark’s agent, Erin Kane, made comments Thursday at the Front Office Sports Breaking Barriers summit at the Mizuho Americas Open in Jersey City, New Jersey, that propped up Clark at the expense of Reese, claiming that the former Iowa standout is “singular.”

“There’s been slow steady growth for years up to this point… Caitlin is singular,” Kane said via Daniel Roberts for FOS. “She’s part of an incredible draft class, but she’s singular in many ways. And it’s creating continued excitement and investment.”

Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese is helping grow the WNBA

Reese and her agent might beg to differ. Reese has over 141,000 subscribers for the podcast “Unapologetically Angel” on YouTube. Reese has more followers on social media than Clark does.

While it’s undeniable that fans are tuning into watch Clark, she’s not exactly a singular phenomenon in the WNBA. Reese and Clark are growing the sport, and their rivalry on the court is helping to foster intrigue for the product.

Reese and Clark will next play in the regular season opener for the Fever and Sky on May 17 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Kane’s comments should light a fire under Reese before the game.
