There was a brief time during the 2024 season when there was some chatter in the media that the Chicago Bears could bench quarterback Caleb Williams and start Tyson Bagent amid the then-rookie’s struggles.

Cooler heads prevailed, and Williams finished the season as the starter. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner made much progress under head coach Ben Johnson last season, and the Bears should have a franchise quarterback for seasons to come.
Last summer, the Bears gave Bagent a two-year contract extension worth $10 million to keep him as the backup through 2027. Before signing the extension, Bagent expressed the desire to have a chance to earn a starting spot for another NFL team.
Per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix, the Arizona Cardinals are interested in trading for Bagent in an offseason when they could part ways with Kyler Murray.
“Have heard the Cardinals are intrigued by Bears backup QB Tyson Bagent,” Gabadoro posted on X. “He has one-year left on his deal so would have to trade for him. Grew up in Martinsburg, West Virginia and went to Shepherd University.
“Was an undrafted free-agent who beat out PJ Walker for the backup job with Chicago and was so good the Bears signed him to a 2-year $10M extension.”

Bagent has two years left on his extension.
What could the Chicago Bears get for Tyson Bagent?

New Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur might like what Bagent has been able to put on tape in recent preseasons. Bagent, who joined Chicago as an undrafted rookie in 2023, has not played many meaningful snaps since his first year in the league.
Overall, Bagent has appeared in 12 games and started four games. He’s 2-2 as a starter. He’s thrown for 917 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions.
It would be interesting to see if the Bears could get a Day 2 pick for the former DII quarterback out of Shepherd. It’s possible Chicago could get more in return for Bagent than they did from the Pittsburgh Steelers for Justin Fields, who fetched a 2025 sixth-round pick.
