Chicago White Sox slugger, first baseman/designated hitter Munetaka Murakami, has been on a tear to begin the year.

More News: Chicago White Sox return prospect to the Red Sox

Early into his big league career, Murakamai has mashed four home runs. According to MLB’s Sarah Langs, the 26-year-old’s four home runs are the most by a Japanese-born player through their first eight games.

Murakami’s fourth home run came against Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Brandon Little. In the top of the sixth inning of Saturday’s game. Little threw Murakami a 1-0 sinker that ran back across the plate. Muraki didn’t miss and sent the pitch 431 feet to dead center field for a two-run homer.

Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery have proven to be the Chicago White Sox’s source of power

Murakami is settling into hitting at the top of the order. So far, he is the White Sox leader in home runs and RBI (seven). Shortstop Colson Montgomery is second after hitting his second home run in the same inning as Murakami.

Montgomery’s first home run was a grand slam against the Milwaukee Brewers. Little again threw a hanging sinker on a 3-1 count that Montgomery didn’t miss and deposited over the right field fence.

The White Sox ranked 23rd in home runs last season (165). This means the White Sox will rely on Murakami (24 last season) and Montgomery (21) to continue to generate the team’s power.

The Chicago White Sox blasted their way to victory over the Miami Marlins (9-4) on Monday to secure their first win of the season.

More News: Chicago White Sox slugger makes history with his MUNEshot

Infielder Miguel Vargas and outfielder Austin Hays were the White Sox’s sole run producers. Vargas tallied six RBI, with four coming on a grand slam in the fourth inning, while Hays hit a three-run home run in the third inning.

Vargas’s grand slam Monday came on the heels of one hit in Sunday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers.

According to OptaSTATS, the White Sox became the first team to hit grand slams consecutive games played in March. Montgomery’s grand slam on Sunday was a part of a five-RBI, two-hit game.

Despite getting swept by the Brewers, the White Sox offense may have turned a corner. The White Sox’s nine-run outburst against the Marlins fell one run shy of the total runs scored (10) in the Brewers series.

Rookie first baseman/designated hitter Munetaka Murakami also kept his hot bat going, picking up his fourth straight hit on Monday. The 26-year-old also leads the team in home runs (three) and total bases (13).

The White Sox also had multi-hit games from three players in the lineup on Monday. Vargas 2-4 (.308 batting average) and two runs scored, outfielder Tristin Peters 2-3 (.444) scored a run, and Everson Pereira 2-4 (.286) with two runs scored. The White Sox are expected to face inexperienced right-hander Janson Junk (4.17 ERA in 2025) on Tuesday.

The Chicago White Sox have had two of the worst seasons in Major League Baseball history in back-to-back years. The good news, though, is that after winning just 41 games in 2024, they improved in 2025 by winning 60 games. Of course, that means they still lost 102 contests, but improvement is improvement.

As the White Sox prepare to start the 2026 MLB season, there is hope that they will, once again, show some improvement. However, their latest win projection for 2026 shows that the improvements fans may want to see are still a year or two away.

Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report recently released his win projections for each Major League team in 2026. And while he does see Chicago taking a step forward, it is not that big of one.

“Make no mistake, the White Sox are still a few years away. But where there wasn’t anything to be excited about two seasons ago, you can start to see the makings of a core with Chase Meidroth, Colson Montgomery, Munetaka Murakami, Kyle Teel and Shane Smith. General manager Chris Getz also added two experienced veterans this offseason with outfielder Austin Hays and reliever Seranthony Domínguez, who can be the adults in the room.

“There’s still quite a bit of pitching development that needs to take place on the South Side, but there finally appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel for the Chi Sox.”

Prediction: 66-96 (Under)

As one can see, Kelly predicts that the White Sox will win 66 games in 2026, a six-game improvement from their 2025 win total.

However, while that is not much of an improvement, Kelly states that brighter days are, indeed, ahead in Chicago.

To be fair, they could not get much worse after a 41-121 season in 2024. However, their 19-game win improvement in 2025 was a massive step in the right direction.

66 wins in 2026 would not be as big of a step forward, but it would be a step nonetheless. With how good the White Sox offense has looked in Spring Training, it is not that far of a stretch to say that they will go as far as their pitching staff will take them.

The Chicago White Sox on Friday agreed to terms with 31 out of 32 of its pre-arbitration players, with infielder Miguel Vargas’ contract getting renewed for 2026, according to a press release.

More News: Chicago White Sox: 3 players vying to be the third baseman

Vargas put together a great second half last season — batting .267 with a .790 OPS post-All-Star Break — and will look to be the White Sox’s starting third baseman come Opening Day, or a platoon bat with first baseman/designated hitter Munetaka Murakami if he can’t hit left-handers.

Other notable Chicago White Sox players to have contracts for the 2026 season

Of the pitchers who agreed to terms to pitch for the White Sox in 2026, we’re right-handers Shane Smith — the White Sox’s only All-Star in 2026 — Davis Martin, and Sean Burke, who will all be a part of Will Venable’s starting rotation. Right-handed relievers Grant Taylor and Mike Vasil also got contracts and will be options for Venable to use in the backend of his bullpen.

All three of the White Sox’s potential catchers for this season, Kyle Teel, Edgar Quero, and Korey Lee, were also given contracts. Teel and Quero split the catching duties last season, while Lee spent most of the season at Triple-A, but Venable could tryout a three-catcher mix to start the season.

Infielders Chase Meidroth, Colson Montgomery, Curtis Mead, and Brooks Baldwin will all be back as well. Montgomery and Meidroth will occupy shortstop and second base, with Baldwin offering versatility playing both infield and outfield. Mead will be in the running with Vargas to start at third base or platoon at first base.

Two seasons ago, the Chicago White Sox had one of the worst records in Major League Baseball history. The 1899 Cleveland Spiders still hold the all-time record for fewest wins, having finished that season 20-134. However, the White Sox hold the modern record, having finished 2024 with a record of 41-121 (the 1962 New York Mets were 40-120).

2025 saw Chicago finish 60-122, which of course was awful, but a near 20-game improvement. Indeed, White Sox fans are ready to see the city’s south side team finally put together a winner and return to postseason contention.

Colson Montgomery does not think they will have to wait much longer.

Colson Montgomery believes the Chicago White Sox will surprise people

Montgomery, Chicago’s former top prospect, is one of the reasons why White Sox fans have been holding out hope that improvements will come. In 71 games last season, he hit .239/.311/.529 with 21 home runs and 55 RBI. Despite playing less than a full Major League season, Montgomery finished fifth in AL Rookie of the Year voting.

And as Spring Training progresses, the young short stop does not think fans will have to wait much longer for the White Sox to be competitive:

“I think it’s easy to say that we will surprise people. And we’re not even thinking it’s a surprise. We all believe it. I’m telling you, I’ve been here for five years now, and even last year it was different. Felt a little different.

“And now this year, everything is just trending in the right direction. I feel it. I believe it. I think that’s the biggest thing, everyone else believes it. It’s not like we think we have the pieces, we think it could go right. It’s like, no. We’ve seen it happen. We have seen us win. We believe that’s what is going to happen.”

As can be seen from Montgomery’s comments, the White Sox believe that they can win many games this year. Not next season. Not in a couple of years. Now.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with this young team full of promising young talent. Another 20-win improvement in 2025 would put them right around the .500 mark, and right in the thick of the MLB postseason picture.

Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery emerged as a future star for the team last season after getting called up and putting together a solid second half.

More News: Chris Getz has confidence in the Chicago White Sox’s future

Reflecting on the struggles he faced to start the 2025 season, Montgomery is confident he’ll do well this year after struggling to start 2025.

“It felt good, especially just where things kind of started, you know, coming into camp, you know, battling for position on the team, and for that to not happen you know, it could definitely get you discouraged, and, you know, your confidence low, and everything like that,” Montgomery said to MLB Network Radio on his 2025 season. “And so I just knew that, you know, there’s certain timings for things. And went to Triple-A, and was still kind of sulking about it, and, you know, that kind of went into not really playing very good in Triple-A. So definitely had to put a lot of ego aside and kind of just get back on track of just being one day at a time, one at bat at a time.”

“So then, you know, a lot of the White Sox, they definitely helped out with a lot of that stuff, you know, just kind of tell me how much they still believe in believe in me and things like that. And at the end of the day, I just felt like things started just aligned pretty good for me, you know, routines and preparation, everything was really good so and then everyone always asked me, like, what changed? And I don’t really feel like anything changed. I just felt like, you know, my confidence was at a high, and I just felt like I knew going into each day that I was gonna give everything I had, and I think that’s why it resulted in a pretty good second half.”

Colson Montgomery has the runway he needs to continue to grow with the Chicago White Sox

During his time at Triple-A last season, Montgomery hit .218 with an OPS of .733 and 11 home runs, while driving in 30 RBI in 216 at-bats. Montgomery’s struggles while in the minors became so profound that he took some time to work with the White Sox director of hitting, Ryan Fuller, who helped turn Montgomery’s swing around. Once he got called up after working with Fuller, Montgomery batted .239 with an OPS of .840 and was second on the team in home runs (21) in 71 games.

Montgomery’s success in the second half of last season should slot in the top four of manager Will Venable’s lineup, with first baseman/designated hitter Munetaka Murakami (246 career home runs, NPB) and second baseman Lenyn Sosa (team leader in home runs, 22) providing him protection.

This protection could help bring up Montgomery’s power numbers, as he’ll see more pitches to hit. However, he’ll need to cut down on his strikeouts, striking out 83 times in 255 at-bats (284 plate appearances).

The Chicago White Sox are a young team heading into the 2026 season. This team has a large variety of expectations, but they have a lot of talent on the field. While finding out who will be will take some time, there are a lot of different options. Let’s take a closer look at who is projected to be the team’s most productive player during the 2026 season.

MLB released an article discussing who they believe will be each team’s leader in Wins Above Replacement during the 2026 season. While there are a lot of intriguing options, they gave the nod to shortstop Colson Montgomery for his power and fielding prowess. Below is what they wrote about their selection, giving him a projected 2.5 WAR for the upcoming season:

“Montgomery absolutely mashed after his callup to the Majors on July 4, socking 21 homers in just 71 games for Chicago down the stretch. He also flashed an impressive gove, totaling +6 Outs Above Average at shortstop in his half-season stint. All told, he racked up 2.7 WAR as a rookie and is projected for a similar total in 2026, which would be tops on a young squad that also features young hitters Chase Meidroth, Miguel Vargas and Kyle Teel — each projected for 2.1 WAR — and Japenese slugger Munetaka Murakami (2.2).”

Montgomery had a great season from when he was called up, finishing fifth in the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year voting. With a .840 OPS with 21 home runs, 55 RBI, and 43 runs scored over 71 games, he has showcased an innate ability to hit the baseball well. It will be intriguing to see if he can continue this in his first full big-league season or if it will be a chance for the opposing team to figure him out.

The Chicago White Sox are going to have a lot of young talent littered throughout their roster. With the 2026 season approaching, there are a lot of reasons to be excited. While the team is not projected to do too much winning, they have a core of players who are continuing to develop. However, the MLB Top 100 has one of the young stars being named as one of the top players in all of Major League Baseball. Let’s take a deeper dive into who it is and why he was named to the list.

The Chicago White Sox see Colson Montgomery on the MLB Top 100 list

After trading away Luis Robert Jr, it seemed like the roster may be bereft of talent. However, they have some young talent for their core, and shortstop Colson Montgomery seems to be the centerpiece. According to MLB Network’s Top 100 Players list, Montgomery is the 88th-best player entering the 2026 season. He is the only member of the team to be named to the list, and he has a lot of hype entering the season. One writer even predicted him to hit 40+ home runs in the 2026 season.

The one flaw in his game has been a high strikeout rate, finishing with a 29.2 strikeout percentage in the majors. It is something we have seen over the years for young players, and some players are able to improve on that number with more experience against major-league pitching.

Montgomery played 71 games as a rookie in 2025 and was fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. He finished the season with a .840 OPS with 21 home runs, 55 RBI, and 43 runs scored while also fielding well from both shortstop and third base. With a full season to put up numbers, it will be intriguing to see how he performs throughout the season on a team not expected to do much winning. If he can continue to showcase his abilities at that same level in 2026, this White Sox team will be exciting.

The Chicago White Sox are on the precipice of being a competitive team once again, but are still a few pieces of the puzzle short of being a finished product.

More News: Chicago White Sox sign Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami to two-year deal

The White Sox’s signing of Japanese slugger Muentaka Murakami indicated their willingness to take a step forward in competing this upcoming season after their young core of prospects showed some signs of life. Led by Rookie of the Year Finalist (fifth) shortstop Colson Montgomery, the White Sox will need him and the rest of their prospects to show some growth in 2025 to compete with the likes of the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians.

The Chicago White Sox need Colson Montgomery to take a step forward in his development to help their rebuild

Despite having a trove of prospects in their system, not all of them will hit and be future foundational pieces of the White Sox roster. Montgomery is one of those foundational pieces that general manager Chris Getz hopes will lead the White Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2021.

For next season, the White Sox will need Montgomery and Murakami (21 and 24 home runs, respectively) to provide the power necessary for the White Sox to score enough runs (27th, 647) to continue to get better in their win total. According to Baseball Reference, Montgomery is projected to be about the same next season, jumping 13 points in his batting average (going from .239 to .252) and taking a dip in his home run total by two (19).

If the White Sox want to further progress in their rebuild, Montgomery will need to be better than these projections.

The White Sox also need to add starting pitching to their young hitting core

Even though the White Sox have an exciting young hitting core, it won’t mean anything if they don’t supplement it with starting pitching and depth in the bullpen. The White Sox’s overall pitching staff ranked 20th in the major leagues for ERA (4.26) and was 21st for their starters’ ERA (4.39), while their bullpen ranked 18th (4.16), but ranked dead last in saves (25).

The White Sox have a few internal options to eat a bulk of the innings they need to fill for 2026, but they still should add a couple more arms to their rotation, with pitchers RHP Drew Thorpe and LHP Ky Bush coming off Tommy John surgery. The White Sox’s lone All-Star in 2025, RHP Shane Smith, appears to be manager Will Venable’s No. 1 and potential Opening Day starter heading into 2026, which will be a massive order for Smith to fill in his sophomore season.

The Chicago White Sox are the worst team in the American League for the second straight season, but they are one of the more exciting teams this season and heading into next season. Their new young core, who have slowly found their footing as the season rolled along, has helped pull the White Sox from the abyss and has put them in a better position to compete next year.

If baseball fans around the league thought the White Sox would be a pushover this season, they were sadly mistaken, as they have completed just their second sweep against the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox came to the Twin Cities, took care of business, and accomplished something not done since 1986 or in Minnesota before!

The Chicago White Sox get their first 4-game sweep in Minnesota ever

The White Sox have not had many sweeps against teams this season, but they’ve officially notched their second sweep after taking all four games against the Twins in dominating fashion. The White Sox’s other sweep this season came in their first three games out of the All-Star break versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, outscoring them 27-7.

This sweep of the Twins showed how good the White Sox offense can be once they get going. Combining to score a jaw-dropping 33 total runs, while only giving up 19 in return to the Twins.

According to Chuck Garfien, anchor and reporter for CHSN, he tweeted that yesterday’s win over the Twins marked their fifth win in a row, all comeback victories, which the White Sox have not done since 1986. Garfien also adds that this is the first four-game sweep in Minnesota by the White Sox EVER! And it’s all thanks to their young guys, who had eight total hits, with Colson Montgomery hitting a 454 home run.

“White Sox win their 5th game in a row.

All comeback victories.

First time they’ve done that since 1986.

They get a 4-game sweep in Minnesota.

First time EVER.

3 hits for Quero and Teel.

4 hits for Meidroth.

Montgomery hit a 454 foot HR.”

The White Sox have a bright future ahead of them

Thankfully, next year should be more exciting, since every prospect on the White Sox roster will have a full season under their belts and return hungry to get to work. This experience will help some of them encounter the dreaded “sophomore slump”, which affects every rookie differently.

Most of these guys will be returning next season, but they should be joined by others like Braden Montgomery, Noah Schultz, and even Hagen Smith, who all could make their debuts next season and help to complete the core. Once these guys come, and the White Sox sign some more veterans to pair with these young guys, the whole league better watch out.

The Chicago White Sox came into this season with one of the better farm systems in baseball, ranking in the top ten, and those prospects are up and flourishing with the team. As the season progressed and prospects graduated from the top 100 list, the White Sox still managed to maintain six of their players on the list heading into the middle of August.

Of the six, Colson Montgomery is the only one up in the big leagues and will graduate soon, but all have the potential to be high-level players for the White Sox. One player of that six is new to the list, having barely even played two months in the minor leagues.

Chicago White Sox’s 2025 draft pick makes the top 100 list more than a month after the draft

The White Sox have a bright future ahead of them, with their young core already producing in the big leagues, but they still have more to offer with more prospects down on the farm. The top prospect the White Sox have in their system is Braden Montgomery, who leapfrogged Noah Schultz, who was the prior holder of that moniker.

However, the White Sox have had an interesting name enter their top five and MLB’s top 100 prospects, with Billy Carlson ranking as their fourth-best prospect and MLB’s 79th-best prospect, according to White Sox on CHSN. Carlson debuting on the top 100 list is impressive, given he was drafted close to a month ago. Even more amazing is that he beat out his teammate Hagen Smith, who ranks at 93.

#WhiteSox 2025 1st round draft pick Billy Carlson is ranked 79th on @MLBPipeline‘s Top 100 Prospects list.

He’s one of 12 2025 draft picks to make the list.”

The White Sox have potentially found their future shortstop in Carlson

Carlson, at 19, has a long way to go until he is up in the big leagues with the White Sox, but he has the potential to be their future shortstop for a decade once he’s called up. Rated as one of the best defensive shortstops coming out of the draft, Carlson was given plus grades for his arm and fielding, both grading at 70/80.

Per his scouting report, Carlson has above-average power (55/80) and has the potential to be a 20+ home run hitter in the big leagues, who could also hit for average. If he can develop into that, the White Sox will have one of the more formidable infields in the game, with Montgomery and Chase Meidroth looking like future All-Stars, and Montgomery flashing future MVP potential with his recent hot stretch. All that would be left would be to find their first baseman of the future.

The Chicago White Sox will be an interesting team to watch in the second half, and it’ll be their rookies and some of their Trade Deadline acquisitions who will bring fans to the ballpark. The White Sox’s best rookie is Colson Montgomery, who has been outstanding since getting the call to come to the big leagues.

Other exciting rookies on the roster, such as Chase Meidroth, Edgar Quero, Grant Taylor, and Kyle Teel, all come close to Montgomery’s level of excitement. Teel would be considered the White Sox’s second most exciting hitter, next to Montgomery, and has also shown his promise since getting called up.

Teel could be a multiple-time All-Star at the catching position, and he showed that in last night’s victory over the Los Angeles Angels, as he joined some elite company from behind the dish.

The White Sox may have found their catching duo for the future, with Quero and Teel splitting time behind the plate. Manager Will Venable needs to figure out how to get them both into the lineup, as that gives the White Sox the best chance to win.

Teel was in the lineup for the White Sox in their 1-0 victory over the Angels, catching all nine innings of what was a dominant pitching performance from Aaron Civale, along with two members of the bullpen, Brandon Eisert and Jorand Leasure. Civale, Eisert, and Leasure held the Angels to just one hit and walked two while striking out nine.

This performance by the White Sox pitching staff, with Teel’s work behind the plate, helped Teel become the first player since the future Hall of Famer Buster Posey in 2014 to catch a one-hitter or a no-hitter while also driving in their only run, according to OptaSTATS.

“Kyle Teel of the @whitesox is the first MLB player to catch a 1-hitter (or no-hitter) while also driving in the only run(s) of the game since Buster Posey did it in a 3-0 win over the Rockies on August 26, 2014.”

The future is bright for Teel and the White Sox

The White Sox have a bright future ahead of them, and Teel is one of those guys who will help get them there. The second half will be a better barometer to gauge how well the White Sox will be for next season, as most of these guys will be returning next year.

The White Sox have much to do to get their team back into shape and be a contender, but having a core such as Montgomery, Teel, Meidroth, Quero, and Taylor is a great start. Hopefully, all of the White Sox’s young guys can continue to stay hot and potentially get the Sox over or close to 60 wins.

The Chicago White Sox have one of the more underrated rosters coming into the second half of the season. The White Sox have exciting players leading the way in the second half and will be the guys they build around for the future.

The player to watch in the White Sox’s new nucleus of players is Colson Montgomery, who has been great since getting called up on the 4th of July weekend. Montgomery, in his short time in the big leagues, could be a multiple-time All-Star once he puts it all together, and has been showing why in his last eight games.

Since getting the call to come up to the big leagues, Montgomery has proven that he is the player the White Sox had thought he’d be. Montgomery, in his last eight games, according to CHSN on X, has five home runs, 12 RBIs, eight hits, and scored six runs.

“Colson Montgomery is showing out”

Montgomery, overall in 22 games with the White Sox this season, has hit .257/.313/.514 for an OPS of .827. Montgomery has been exciting since the jump, and not just in these last eight games, as his first career hit was a triple in Coors Field, and he made one of the better catches this season.

A bright future is ahead for Montgomery and the White Sox

The White Sox have a bright future ahead of them, with Montgomery leading the way and showing he can be a middle-of-the-order bat. Montgomery likely will move over to third base, given his size and power potential, but the door hasn’t fully closed on him playing shortstop.

Along with Montgomery, the White Sox have Kyle Teel, Chase Meidroth, Edgar Quero, and others emerging as future pieces. All are on the big league roster and are leading the White Sox to a better second half.

The Chicago White Sox have had a great start to the second half, going 5-1 in their first six games and winning back-to-back series against the Tampa Bay Rays and Pittsburgh Pirates. The White Sox’s hot start is due to Luis Robert Jr. finally swinging a hot bat and a couple of their young guys, Kyle Teel and Colson Montgomery, getting hot at the right time.

The White Sox’s young core is what will help lead them to a better second half, with Teel and Montgomery leading the way so far. The series against the Rays couldn’t have come at a better time for the White Sox’s two young hitters, with both hitting their first career home runs and making a little White Sox history.

Montgomery and Teel have chosen the right time to get hot at the plate, and the right ballpark to do it in, with George Steinbrenner Field proving to be a hitters’ paradise this season. Both got to experience the hype of hitting in Steinbrenner Field, with Teel and Montgomery hitting their first career home runs in back-to-back games.

Montgomery, for his home run, came off right-hander Bryan Baker, who threw a fastball down the heart of the plate, which Montgomery deposited into the rightfield stands.

“COLSON MONTGOMERY’S FIRST MLB HOME RUN”

For Teel, his home run came off the Rays’ hard-throwing right-hander Joe Boyle, who also left a fastball over the heart of the plate, which Teel didn’t miss.

“Kyle Teel launches his first big league homer!”

The White Sox rookie duo, with their home runs, made some franchise history, as they are the first White Sox rookies to hit their first career home runs in back-to-back games, since Chris Getz and Gordon Beckham did it on June 19- 20 of 2009.

The second half for the White Sox will be a better barometer of how the future will go than the first half. The White Sox virtually have most of their new core together for the first time, and they’ll all be getting a long look in the second half to see what they can bring for next season.

Teel and Montgomery are already showing glimpses of what they could do in a full season, with Montgomery hitting .275/.351/.471 with an OPS of .822 in 16 games, while Teel is hitting .277/.390/.373 for an OPS of .763 in 28 games. Both need to continue this hot streak moving forward if the White Sox are to finish with a better record than the first half.

A sense of optimism should surround the Chicago White Sox for the second half, as they can “start over” and see what their young core can do. There are many players in that core, and still to come, who can help the White Sox get back to being a winning ballclub.

There’s one player in that core who sticks out among the others, who could help or hurt the White Sox’s chances of succeeding in the second half, and that’s 23-year-old shortstop Colson Montgomery. Montgomery has had quite the season, which has seen its share of ups and downs, but has thankfully landed him in the big leagues, and now he can try to find his footing with an extended look at shortstop in the second half.

An up-and-down year for the Chicago White Sox’s young shortstop

This season has not gone as Montgomery had planned, but he ultimately made his way up to the big leagues, even though it looked like he wouldn’t be up until September. Montgomery was the front-runner to be the White Sox’s Opening Day shortstop until he hit a rough patch at the plate in spring training, which led to him getting optioned to Charlotte.

Sadly, Montgomery allowed those struggles to continue while with the Knights, which prompted the White Sox to send him to Arizona for a full reset with their hitting director, Ryan Fuller. Fuller’s changes to Montgomery’s swing helped him succeed once he returned to Charlotte and led to his being called up on July 4th.

Since joining the White Sox, Montgomery has played in 10 games and had 28 at-bats, where he’s hitting .250/.382/.321 for an OPS of .703. Montgomery only has one extra base hit, which was a triple (also his first big league hit), and he has not hit a double or a home run in his 35 plate appearances.

The White Sox need a successful Colson Montgomery in the second half

For the White Sox to be successful in the second half, they need all their young guys to perform, but they need Montgomery to perform more than the rest. MLB.com’s Scott Merkin wrote that for the White Sox rebuild to be a success moving forward, Montgomery needs to be who they thought he’d be for it to work.

Merkin on Montgomery’s success via MLB.com:

“It’s been a full season for the No. 5 White Sox prospect and No. 95 overall, per MLB Pipeline, and there are still 65 games remaining. Montgomery fought his way through struggles with Triple-A Charlotte and a reset in Arizona to earn a big-league promotion on July 4. He came into Pittsburgh with just two singles in his last 18 at-bats, following a 5-for-10 start, meaning the skilled left-handed hitter once again will have to adjust to the adjustments being made against him. Montgomery’s success is a big part for this rebuild moving forward.”

The White Sox will give Montgomery a lot of leeway in the second half to find his footing, with the bulk of his playing time coming as their starting shortstop. Montgomery could be a third baseman long-term with his build and power, but for now, he’ll have time to figure things out over at shortstop.

As the Chicago White Sox continue their rebuild, numerous top prospects have been given the opportunity to prove themselves at the major league level. Shortstop Colson Montgomery has become the latest, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact.

To be fair, he went hitless in his MLB debut, leaving fans in anticipation of his first hit. But when the White Sox took on the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, Montgomery left his mark. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple as Chicago earned a 10-3 victory.

The triple marked Montgomery’s first base knock at the big league level. While his emotions were running hot, once he got on base, the top prospect was able to settle in and focus on earning a win, via Lamond Pope of the Chicago Tribune.

“Once I got the first one out of the way, I was like, ‘All right, now we’re just playing, now we’re just trying to win the game,’” Montgomery said. “The rest of the guys, (Lenyn) Sosa, (Mike) Tauchman, they started the game off hot, that’s why they’re at the top of the lineup. Our veterans, they set the tone early and it’s kind of easy to feed off of.”

Manager Will Venable was impressed by Montgomery’s work as the dish. As the White Sox continue to build their foundation, the shortstop is expected to play a massive role in any future success.

“He put some really good swings on pitches, quality at-bats,” Venable said. “Happy that he got his first knock.”

Chicago White Sox vs Colorado Rockies

The White Sox vs. Rockies series was one of the more notable in the first half of the 2025 season. But for all the wrong reasons. Chicago’s 30-60 record is the worst in the American League. Colorado’s 21-69 is the worst in the National League and therefore all of baseball. It was a battle of 2025’s two worst teams.

While no banners will be hung, the White Sox came away with the series victory, winning two out of the three games. In the matchup Montgomery went off in, game two, Jonathan Cannon pitched 5.1 innings of two run baseball, although it came with eight hits allowed and just one strikeout. Still, Lenyn Sosa did most of the damage, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI total.

The victory came after Chicago earned a narrow 3-2 win in the series opener. Adrian Houser put together arguably the best start of his career, pitching eight innings of scoreless baseball, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. A sixth inning home run from Edgar Quero, his first at the major league level, led the White Sox to victory.

Things came crash down though in game through, as the Rockies avoided a sweep with a 6-4 win. Shane Smith, who was recently named an All-Star, allowed five earned runs. The White Sox battled back, scoring in the third to fifth inning. But a four-run fifth by the Rockies put the final nail in coffin for the game and series.

Colson Montgomery’s road to White Sox

In that final game, Montgomery went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. He is now hitting .500 with a pair of RBI and his aforementioned triple. The White Sox will give him as long of a leash as possible as he tries to cement himself as the shortstop of the present and future.

Montgomery was originally selected by Chicago in the first-round of the 2021 MLB Draft. By 2022, he was the No. 1 overall prospect in the entire organization, via MLB Pipeline. While he is now in the majors, Montgomery still ranks fifth-overall in Chicago’s farm system.

Over his 376 games at the minor league level, Montgomery hit .246 with 48 home runs, 186 RBI and 15 stolen bases. While he had 11 home runs over his 55 games at Triple-A in 2025, it came with a .218 batting average. And that was after Montgomery hit .214 in 2024. As he continues he career at the majors, the White Sox are counting on Montgomery to find his consistency at the plate.

A series against the Rockies may be what any hitter needs to jumpstart their bat. After finally achieving his MLB dreams, Montgomery is ready to put in the work and prove why the White Sox called him up.

The Chicago White Sox will wrap up their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight. After dropping the first two games, they were the team to fell victim to future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw getting his 3,000th strikeout. Kershaw caught utility man Vinny Capra looking at a strike on the outside corner, which prompted manager Will Venable to jump out of the dugout and argue, which was in poor taste given the gravity of the situation.

There was a happier moment for the White Sox outside of helping to make MLB history once again. This series marked infielder Miguel Vargas’s return to Dodger Stadium after he was traded last season at the Trade Deadline. Being a member of the Dodgers for the first half of last year, Vargas was entitled to a World Series ring, which was bestowed upon him before game one.

With the series almost wrapped up, the White Sox will spend their July 4th weekend playing the Colorado Rockies, who are currently the worst team in baseball, and are on pace to break the White Sox’s loss record from last season. This should be an interesting series, given that both teams are terrible, but the White Sox may have an added edge when playing the Rockies, as they will be joined by one special player.

The Chicago White Sox are calling up yet another one of their top prospects

The White Sox have made this season about calling up their young players and giving them a chance to show what they can do at the major league level. They’re doing that again, with Sports Director for WITZ Radio Kris Norton reporting that they’re calling up their No. 5 overall prospect Colson Montgomery to make his Major League Debut on Friday.

“BREAKING: Former Southridge Raider Colson Montgomery (Holland, Indiana) got the call to the MLB, confirmed by family.

The 2021 first round pick (22nd pick) will make his debut for the Chicago White Sox on 4th of July against the Colorado Rockies on the road.”

Montgomery (23), has had an up-and-down year down on the farm, which saw him go down to Arizona to work with hitting director Ryan Fuller to fix his swing. Since returning from Arizona, Montgomery has done great, and he had a strong month of June, where he hit .281 with an OPS of 1.010.

Overall, through 55 games with the Charlotte Knights, Montgomery hit .218/.298/.435 for an OPS of .733. Montgomery also had 11 home runs and 10 doubles in 216 at-bats.

How will the White Sox utilize Montgomery?

Montgomery is primarily a shortstop, and he should be playing there now that he is up with the big league club. Chase Meidroth had been taking the bulk of the starters’ reps at short, but could slide over to second, which is his natural position.

Montgomery could also see some time over at third base, where he could end up since he has more of a third baseman’s build. Whatever the case is, it’s exciting to see Montgomery finally here and see what he’ll bring to the table.

Montgomery was the front-runner to be the team’s Opening Day shortstop until his bat went cold, but thankfully, he’s here now. The White Sox’s young core is now coming together with Montgomery getting the call, and things are getting exciting.

The Chicago White Sox came into this season hoping not to have a repeat of last season, where they were the worst team in baseball and set the all-time loss record in Major League Baseball at 41-121. Things got off to a bumpy start and looked like they were on pace to tie or surpass their record, but thankfully, they aren’t all that bad.

Things have been better than expected, with their success mostly coming from the White Sox allowing their young prospects to play and figure out the game at the major league level. Allowing their young players to play may still cost them a few games here and there, but in the long run, it will pay off as these experiences will help the future team when things get tough.

The Chicago White Sox have been “meeting expectations” for this season

The White Sox thankfully won’t own the worst record in baseball this season and will settle for the worst record in the American League, as the Colorado Rockies could be the lucky team to hold the worst record in baseball for this season and break the White Sox’s loss record from last season. In an article by Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report in which he re-thought all 30 teams’ preseason projections, his verdict came out as the White Sox are “meeting expectations”.

Miller’s verdict via Bleacher Report:

“As a reminder, “meeting expectations” isn’t necessarily a good thing, when those expectations were “worst record in the American League by a substantial margin.”

To their credit, the White Sox are a bit better than last year’s historic ineptitude. However, they remain every bit the AL Central basement dweller we expected them to be, presently 13.5 games back of fourth place in the division.

Quite unlike the considerably worse Colorado Rockies, though, at least Chicago appears to have identified some long-term potential, with several rookies performing admirably. Shane Smith and Chase Meidroth have been considerable positives, and at least Edgar Quero is batting .276 while we await his first career home run.”

The second half should be interesting for the White Sox

Even though the White Sox will lose more games during the second half, they should be one of the more interesting teams to watch. The White Sox still have a few players to trade, and with the news that they could be willing to eat some money for a deal with Andrew Benintendi, it could increase their chances of getting a better deal.

Once trades are made, the White Sox could look to call up more prospects who are close to being big league-ready to take the place of the guys who left. Players like Colson Montgomery and Noah Schultz are waiting in the wings for their turn to get the call, which could be coming soon.

The Chicago White Sox are expected to be among the many teams selling off players at this year’s Trade Deadline. They have a few players who could be of some interest to teams contending for the playoffs. The best chance the White Sox have at “striking it big” at the deadline is hoping that a team is willing to take a chance on Luis Robert Jr., whose struggles at the plate have made some teams cautious to trade for him.

Even though Robert Jr. hasn’t had the best season at the plate, a team still could take a chance on him since he’s still played Gold Glove caliber defense in centerfield and is in the top five for steals in all of baseball. The White Sox do have a few other players who could be on the move, like middle infielder Lenyn Sosa, outfielder Mike Tauchman, as well as a few arms like left-handers Cam Booser and Tyler Alexander from the bullpen, and right-hander Aaron Civale.

Since the White Sox have the pieces to trade, the question then becomes, what will they try to get for those pieces?

The Chicago White Sox Trade Deadline plans become clearer

Chicago White Sox Will Venable

The White Sox’s Trade Deadline plans may have become a little clearer, with a recent report published on MLB.com reporting the “One thing each team will be looking for before the Deadline”. For the White Sox, Scott Merkin writes that the White Sox will be seeking “Young, controllable talent” with the White Sox not looking for “long-term projectable type of prospects”.

Merkin via MLB.com:

“The White Sox are moving toward the truly competitive phase of the rebuild, possibly by the second half of the 2026 season, with many of their top prospects having made their way to the Majors and more to arrive by the end of the 2025 season. So the White Sox might not be looking as much for the long-term projectable type of prospects as they will for players who can help sooner than later at the front of a deal. The shortstop position could be a target for return, even with rookie Chase Meidroth there now and Colson Montgomery on the way from Triple-A Charlotte, but that spot usually is filled by a player with premium talent.”

The White Sox need to have a perfect Trade Deadline

It’s no secret that the White Sox are still considered one of the bottom teams in baseball, but that can all change if they have a strong Trade Deadline. Most of the White Sox’s top talent is up this season, with them gaining valuable experience to take into next season to make this team more competitive.

Prospects like Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Colson Montgomery, and Braden Montgomery wait in the wings for their turn to get the call to the big leagues, with Colson Montgomery and Noah Schultz possibly being the next two prospects to debut this season. If the White Sox can land the “players who can help now” as Merkin put it, and pair them with the prospects already up and waiting in the wings, the White Sox could be one of the more sneakier teams to watch in the next few seasons.

Entering the 2025 season, Chicago White Sox rookie Chase Meidroth seemed like a man without a home. Known for his hitting prowess, one of the only questions the club seemed to have about him was: “What position should he play?”

At the plate, the 23-year-old rookie is currently hitting .296 with an on-base percentage of .385 and 21 runs scored. But his offensive output wasn’t what befuddled the big club. Last season at Charlotte, Meidroth played all three infield positions on a fairly regular basis. He made 98 appearances at third base, 74 at shortstop, and 65 as a second baseman. So, there was some question about where he would be most effective.

Without having a ‘natural position’, Sox management had concerns about where he fit best on the diamond. Thus far, Meidroth has played 14 games at second, but he’s currently settled in at short, appearing in 41 games at the position. The former University of San Diego standout has easily exceeded expectations in the field, committing three errors in 154 total chances. He has a .986 overall fielding percentage. Not too bad for a guy who was mostly known for his bat.

Chicago White Sox management has high hopes for Chase Meidroth

When a player can hit like Meidroth, a smart manager will always find a place for them. It’s more than likely that he will eventually be settled at second or third base, as fellow youngster Colson Montgomery is expected to be the long-term solution at short for Chicago.

For now, Meidroth gives the team some defensive flexibility and looks to be a cornerstone of the team for the next several years. In the meantime, he’s also settled in quite nicely as the team’s leadoff hitter.

“If there’s one thing that I’ve been on him about is just letting it loose in the heart of the plate more and being more aggressive at times,” Venable said earlier this season. “At the same time, that’s just in his DNA to be a selective hitter. I don’t want to change who he is, but I think in time that he’ll learn that he needs to be aggressive and get some good swings off early in the count on pitches over the heart.”

Chase Meidroth is part of an impressive White Sox youth movement

Mandatory Credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images

It’s well-documented how things have gone on the Southside over the last several seasons. The club’s decline hit its lowest depths last season, when the team set an MLB record for the most losses in a season with 121, and home games looked like a wasteland.

But help is on the way, and a much brighter future looks to be on the horizon. Alongside Chase Meidroth, the Sox have some top-line starting pitching prospects, like right hander Grant Taylor, who made his MLB debut this week and threw a dominant inning against the Houston Astros. Standing right there with them are left handed pitchers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith, outfielder Braden Montgomery, and catcher Kyle Teel. So, the cupboard certainly isn’t bare.

The Pale Hose don’t want to push their prospects too soon, but that may end up being Chicago’s best option in the end. The club is focused on winning now, according to their skipper. But if a young player can help the lineup, he will most likely be on Will Venable’s lineup card.

“That’s the bottom line,” Venable stated. “For us, regardless of the results, we’re going to focus on the things we believe are going to help contribute to wins.”

The Chicago White Sox are beginning to play great baseball and won their fourth series this season by beating the Texas Rangers 10-5. The White Sox recently added some reinforcements to their lineup when outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Mike Tauchman were reinstated from the injured list and drove in four RBIs in last night’s victory.

The White Sox have also gotten contributions from one of their young guys, Chase Meidroth, who is riding a 12-game hit streak after getting another knock last night and raising his batting average for the season to .307. Miguel Vargas kept his hot bat going by adding two more hits last night. Vargas will be counted on more than ever, as he will be the everyday first baseman after the White Sox optioned Andrew Vaughn and Tim Elko to the minor leagues.

Vaughn and Elko will be joining a Charlotte Knights team that has a few players like Kyle Teel and Colson Montgomery, who are swinging hot bats, and both could be up with the White Sox soon if their success at the plate continues.

Colson Montgomery appears to have turned things around

The start of the 2025 season has not gone as planned for either the White Sox or Montgomery, who got off to one of the worst starts in his young career. Montgomery’s struggles were so glaring and prolonged that he was knocked down two pegs on the White Sox’s top 30 prospect list, going from four to six and getting removed from the MLB top 100 list entirely.

The White Sox decided to put Montgomery on the developmental list and send him to the White Sox facilities in Arizona, where he was to work on his swing with the White Sox director of hitting, Ryan Fuller. Since spending time with Fuller, Montgomery made some noticeable changes to his stance by lowering his hands and changing his approach at the plate.

The changes appear to have taken hold, as since he returned from Arizona, MLB.com Scott Merkin pointed out that Montgomery has gone 12-35 (.343 average), and he has seen his season average climb over the .200 mark for the first time this year.

“Colson Montgomery is 3-for-3 tonight with a home run and two doubles–now hitting .202, and 12-for-35 since his return.”

Even better, Montgomery went 4-4 with two home runs and collected 12 total bases in the Knights’s 8-6 loss to the Frisco Rough Riders.

“COLSON MONTGOMERY GOES YARD AGAIN!!

That’s 12 Total Bases for Colson!”

The Chicago White Sox may call Montgomery up sooner rather than later

A call to the big leagues may be in store for Montgomery, given his success at the plate and the White Sox needing more offense. With the White Sox shifting around their infield alignment with Vaughn and Elko getting sent down, Montgomery could be an option for the White Sox to use as their everyday third baseman with Vargas getting shifted over to first base.

It’s a great sign that Montgomery is showing signs of success after it looked like he was trending toward being a “bust” of a prospect. If Montgomery can keep things up, maybe Montgomery can also be readded to the top 100 prospects list on top of getting called up to the show.

The Chicago White Sox have many prospects in their farm system that hopefully will soon make their debuts and help turn around this ball club and get the White Sox back to their winning ways. A few of their top prospects, like Sean Burke, Chase Meidroth, and Edgar Quero, have already made their debut and are proving why they are pieces for the White Sox to build around.

Others, like the White Sox’s top pitching prospects, Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, and Grant Taylor, are down at Double-A, tearing it up and showing why they will be the future of the White Sox staff. There is one prospect in the White Sox system, however, who has struggled mightily to start this season and found himself off of MLB’s top 100 prospects list.

The Chicago White Sox’s top shortstop prospect has been removed from the top 100 list

With the MLB season in full swing and prospects starting to graduate and get promoted to the big leagues, MLB Pipeline decided to re-release their top 100 prospects, and, thankfully, the White Sox find themselves having five of their top prospects making the top 100, with Noah Schultz ranking the highest at No. 13. Others who made the list are: Kyle Teel (28), Hagen Smith (30), Braden Montgomery (38), and Edgar Quero (58).

”Prospects who debuted on MLB Opening Day rosters graduated today, giving us an opportunity to update the list:

Here it is, with a shakeup at the top:”

Surprisingly, shortstop Colson Montgomery was on MLB Pipeline’s list before the season started, but it has been removed entirely. Even more surprising about Montgomery’s fall from grace is that Montgomery dropped two spots on the White Sox’s top 30 prospects, going from No. 4 to No. 6.

Montgomery’s struggles

MLB: Spring Training Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox

Since Montgomery was optioned to Triple-A, Montgomery’s bat has not come alive and has been colder than the Antarctic. Overall, in 28 games, the 23-year-old Montgomery is hitting .153/.230/.243 for a horrible OPS of .473.

Even more concerning is that the former first-round pick has shown little to no power, only hitting three home runs and one double in 111 at-bats. These numbers won’t do, especially for a player playing a premier position such as shortstop, and for someone whose power is their best tool, grading out at 55/80.

Montgomery’s struggles became so much of a concern for the White Sox that they decided to have him pause participating in and playing games to go out to Arizona to work one-on-one with the White Sox director of hitting, Ryan Fuller. Working with Fuller should help Montgomery, who is still young and can work through these struggles.

Not every prospect pans out as some will fail, and won’t pan out, but the White Sox need Montgomery to work out, given they aren’t deep with shortstop prospects. If Montgomery has any hopes or aspirations of making it to the show, he has to figure things out and turn things around.

The Chicago White Sox are preparing to welcome the 14-15 Milwaukee Brewers to town for a three-game series. The Brewers are third in the National League Central and are looking to come in to sweep the Sox and boost themselves up in the standings. The White Sox can’t let that happen, as they find themselves once again at the bottom of the American League Central and they need to win a series after dropping the past four.

Thankfully, the White Sox will be getting some reinforcements soon, as Josh Rojas is set to begin a rehab stint with the Charlotte Knights. The Knights have one player who is struggling, Colson Montgomery, who will have his schedule adjusted for a little while he works to get better.

Chicago White Sox work to fix Montgomery’s swing

According to Scott Merkin of MLB.com, the White Sox will be sending Montgomery to Arizona to work with their director of hitting Ryan Fuller to fix his swing. Merkin also reports that this stint to Arizona should last one to two weeks and these sessions will be one-on-one with Fuller.

“Colson will be getting some 1 on 1 work, away from daily games, with Ryan Fuller one of the people there. Get said 1 or 2 weeks.”

This hasn’t been the best start to the season for the young 23-year-old, who is hitting .149/.223/.255 for an OPS of .478 in 23 games with the Knights. The White Sox optioned Montgomery to the Knights after he didn’t hit this spring and that cost him his chance to be the starting shortstop for them.

The need for Colson to start hitting

Montgomery will need to start proving he can hit if he is to have a chance of being the White Sox shortstop of the future. Sadly, not hitting is not unusual for Montgomery, as he is a lifetime .245 hitter in five minor league seasons.

The White Sox aren’t deep at the shortstop position, with their next-best shortstop prospect being Caleb Bonemer. Bonemer was drafted by the White Sox in the second round (43) in the 2024 draft and is not expected to be ready for the MLB until 2028.

Hopefully, these one-on-one sessions with Fuller will fix whatever is broken in Colson’s swing and get him back on track.

The Chicago White Sox have a stacked farm system, with most of their top 100 prospects at Charlotte or Birmingham.

The White Sox have six players on MLB’s top 100 list, with left-hander Noah Schultz ranking the highest at 15.

Most of these guys will be up either this year or next to aid in the rebuild and form a new nucleus of players that can lead the Sox to success and recapture the feeling of the postseason, which has been absent for a few years.

One player in the White Sox system they are high on could find it hard to break onto the Major League roster as he has struggled to start this season, and those struggles have carried over from the spring.

A tale of one Chicago White Sox prospect’s struggles

Colson Montgomery is ranked as the fourth-highest prospect in the White Sox system and 38th on the top 100. The White Sox drafted the now 23-year-old in the first round (22nd overall) in the 2021 MLB Draft to be their shortstop of the future.

So far, Montgomery has not had the best start to his professional career. In five minor league seasons, Montgomery has a career slash line of .249/.373/.410 with an OPS of .783.

Montgomery’s struggles were present this spring, as he only hit .111/.111/.444 with an OPS of .556 in just four games. It didn’t help that he was dealing with back spasms, which limited his time on the field and cost him his chances to win the starting shortstop spot.

Now, those struggles present during spring training have carried over to the regular season and are getting into Montgomery’s head.

Montgomery’s rough start to the year

Even though he’s played in five games with the Charlotte Knights, Montgomery has been terrible, to put it mildly, and it is starting to get concerning.

Montgomery has a .050/.136/.200 slash line and an OPS of .336 to start the season, but the most concerning feature is how much he’s struck out to start the year. In 20 at-bats (22 plate appearances), Montgomery has 15 strikeouts and no walks.

The concern here is that striking out this much will start to affect Montgomery’s confidence and his development, which are critical for him to take the next step in getting called up.

Others on the roster, such as Chase Meidroth and Kyle Teel, are off to great starts, and in the case of Meidroth, he and Montgomery are competing to get the call-up, and at this rate, Meidroth has a clear advantage over Montgomery.

Montgomery will need to turn this around

Montgomery will need to start shorting up his swing and finding a better approach at the plate to pull himself out of this slump.

Possibly, manager Sergio Santos should start considering a drop in the lineup for Montgomery to see more fastballs and lessen the pressure on him.

Whatever the case, this is a concern not only for Montgomery but for the White Sox, who see Montgomery as a key contributor to their lineup.

Hopefully, this is just an overreaction, and everything will work out with Montgomery becoming the player he looked like in the Arizona Fall League.

The Chicago White Sox have one of the better farm systems in Major League Baseball, ranking sixth and having six top 100 prospects.

The White Sox’s top three pitchers in their system, Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, and Grant Taylor are all starting their seasons at Double-A Birmingham and will be one of the better pitching staffs in the Southern League.

Four of the White Sox’s top position player prospects are at Triple-A Charlotte, where they’ll get everyday reps to prepare them for when they get the call to go to the big leagues.

The future of the Chicago White Sox starts at Charlotte

Four of the White Sox’s top prospects are at the top of the lineup for tonight’s game against the Gwinnett Stripers.

Lineup for the game:

  1. Chase Meidroth
  2. Colson Montgomery
  3. Edgar Quero
  4. Kyle Teel
  5. Bobby Dalbec
  6. Zach DeLoach
  7. Tim Elko
  8. Cal Mitchell
  9. Corey Julks

The most interesting part of the lineup is the top four, in particular, the top two of Meidroth and Montgomery, who could be the future one & two on the White Sox lineup.

The top two of Meidroth and Montgomery

MLB: Chicago White Sox Media Day

Meidroth is an on-base machine, having a career of .425 OBP in three minor-league seasons. Meidroth is also an above-average hitter, hitting .293 last season.

Meidroth also has a great eye at the plate, being a walking machine, which led to his high OBP. Having these two tools makes him an effective lead-off hitter.

Montgomery hitting behind Meidroth is a smart move by manager Sergio Santos. Montgomery’s best tool is his power, and batting Meidroth in front of him will help drive up his RBI total.

Montgomery and Meidroth were in contention for the starting shortstop position during the spring, but Montgomery’s injuries and Meidroth inability to hit didn’t help them win the job.

The future of the White Sox lineup?

Even though this is the first game of the Knights season, this could be a sign that Meidroth and Montgomery could see a lot of time in the one and two spots to prepare them for when they get called up.

Meidroth saw plenty of time at the top of the White Sox order this spring and Montgomery did the same in the two hole.

If both have success in those spots for the first month, they could both receive a call to come up and be the one and two for the Sox.

The Chicago White Sox are one week away from Opening Day and are putting the final touches on their roster to get prepared to take on the Los Angeles Angels.

The White Sox recently made a few trimmings to the roster, getting the roster to 42 players left in camp. The latest round of cuts featured the Sox’s top-catching prospects, Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero, being reassigned to minor-league camp.

There are still a few prospects in camp who still have a chance to win a job, and one of those prospects could be the starting shortstop on Opening Day.

The Opening Day shortstop for the Chicago White Sox?

MLB: Chicago White Sox Media Day

Chase Meidroth was one of the players brought over from the Boston Red Sox organization in the trade for left-hander Garrett Crochet.

Since joining the White Sox Meidroth has elevated himself to being named the Sox’s eighth-ranked prospect in the organization. The 23-year-old Meideoth has respectable grades on MLB.com, with his best tool being his hit tool, which gets a plus grade of 60/80.

Meidroth’s hitting ability hasn’t been displayed this spring, but his plate discipline has been. In 28 at-bats (36 plate appearances), Meidroth has walked eight times, which is good for a .306 on-base percentage.

Meidroth’s ability to get on base will help him make the Opening Day roster for the White Sox. The Sox have lacked a legitimate leadoff hitter, and Meiroth’s ability to work deep counts, have a high OBP, and steal some bags will make him the perfect option to lead off ballgames.

One of the big reasons why Meidroth will likely make the roster on March 27 is his fellow prospect and shortstop, Colson Montgomery, who was optioned down to Triple-A Charlotte last week. Montgomery’s optioning to the minors further helped Meidroth to win the job.

Signs are showing

There have been signs that have led to the speculation that Meidroth, a non-roster invite to camp this spring, will win the job and make the team. In yesterday’s lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers, Meidroth was again at the shortstop spot.

Meidroth also played short and was in the leadoff spot when the Sox played the San Fransisco Giants. Meidroth also batted leadoff and played third against the Colorado Rockies.

This placement in the lineup by manager Will Venable is a sign of confidence that he thinks Meidroth will be a key contributor to the lineup for this season.

A promising young prospect

Meidroth is a promising young prospect and is not one of the well-known names in the system, but can be a productive big leaguer.

The likelihood that Meidrith will debut on March 27 is high if he’s survived this long.

With possibly two more rounds of cuts before the Sox finalize their roster to start the season, Meidroths fate will be determined soon on whether he’ll make the trip to Chicago or report to Charolette

The Chicago White Sox are ramping themselves up to start their season, which hopefully won’t be a repeat of last season.

The White Sox start the season on the 27th when they take on the newly minted Los Angeles Angels, who could bring back two former White Sox in Yoán Moncada and Tim Anderson, who are fighting to win a roster spot with the Angels.

The White Sox made some roster cuts today, which featured one of their top prospects going down to Triple-A.

The Chicago White Sox option top prospect

The White Sox made more roster moves, which shrunk the White Sox roster down to 54 players left in camp. One notable name optioned down to Triple-A was the Sox’s No. 4 overall prospect, Colson Montgomery.

Montgomery came into camp competing for the starting shortstop job, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore.

Montgomery has not done that great, hitting .111/.111/.444 for an OPS of .556 with four total bases. Montgomery’s only hit this spring was a home run he launched off Chicago Cubs left-hander Caleb Thielbar.

The 23-year-old returned to the White Sox lineup the other day after missing a few games due to back spasms. Montgomery went hitless in his return but said he felt good after the game.

Even though Montgomery “feels good” having back spasms at this young age is a concern. Montgomery’s best quality is his ability to hit for power, which MLB.com grades at 60/80. The back is one of the key components of a hitter’s swing, and anything affecting it could lower his production.

Opportunities for others

Since Montgomery is no longer in the running for the starting shortstop job, other players like Lenyn Sosa, Josh Rojas, and Chase Meidroth, to be the starting shortstop come to Opening Day.

Sosa will likely get the first go at short, given he’s been on fire this spring, hitting .389/.450/.500 for an OPS of .950 in seven games. Rojas will likely be the White Sox second baseman, occasionally getting some spot starts at short or being a defensive replacement late in games.

White Sox fans have seen the last of Montgomery for this season. Since he was hurt and wasn’t producing, starting the year in the minors is the smart move for the White Sox. Montgomery will likely be up at some point this year, but hell has to produce for that to happen.

Hopefully, Montgomery can find his swing and put up the numbers in the first month of the season so he can come back up and be the starter for the remainder of the season.

The White Sox are set to begin their season on March 27 when they take on the Los Angeles Angels at the newly named Rate Field. This series should be an interesting one being the Angels have a couple of former White Sox prospects on their roster.

Before the season starts, however, the White Sox still have to make a few more cuts to the roster to start the season. With a couple of positional battles going on in camp, the White Sox will be keeping close tabs on a few players who are vying to make their first Opening Day roster.

One player looking to make the Chicago White Sox roster

One player looking to make his first Opening Day roster is the White Sox’s No. 4 overall prospect, Colson Montgomery. Montgomery also ranks as the 39th-best prospect in Major League Baseball.

So far this spring, Montgomery has not done that great, hitting .111/.111/.444 for an OPS of .556 with four total bases.

Is Montgomery the shortstop of the future?

Montgomery has every chance to win the starting shortstop job and make the White Sox Opening Day roster. The question for Montgomery, however, is whether he can be the White Sox shortstop long-term.

Shortstop is a physically demanding position from an athletic standpoint, and with Montgomery is experiencing back spasms that could affect his ability to play the position. Also, standing at 6-3 makes Montgomery one of the bigger shortstops in the game.

Montgomery could benefit from a position change, given these two factors. Moving him to third or first base could be the way to go, given they’re both power positions, and Montgomery profiles as a power hitter with 30-home run potential.

Still, time left

There’s still some time remaining this spring for Montgomery to turn things around and show he’s capable of being the Opening Day shortstop for the Sox.

There’s not much more that Montgomery has to prove at the minor-league level, with all that remains is him proving it at the big-league level.

We shall know in the next couple of weeks what the White Sox’s decision on Montgomery will be, but hopefully, we’ll be seeing him on the Southside come the 27th.

The Chicago White Sox picked up where they were last year by continuing the losing and looking like they’ll be the worst team in baseball again this season.

The White Sox are currently the only team without a win this spring, and it appears like they won’t win a game anytime soon.

The only saving grace for the Soutsiders this season will be the young prospects quickly coming down the pike.

Sadly, one of those prospects was a late scratch from today’s lineup against the Cleveland Guardians.

Chicago White Sox’s top shortstop scratched from the lineup

Before today’s game against the Guardians, the White Sox pulled shortstop Colson Montgomery from the lineup after it became known that he was dealing with back spasms, per White Sox beat writer Daryl Van Schouwen.

“Colson Montgomery scratched for precautionary reasons with back spasms … he is day to day.”

Luckily, this isn’t too serious of an injury, and with rest and some time off, Montgomery should come back healthy and ready to go.

The future shortstop of the Southsiders

Montgomery is expected to be the White Sox shortstop of the future and comes into camp competing for the job. The 23-year-old Montgomery has struggled, going 1-7 after hitting a moonshot to deep centerfield in his spring debut.

Last season was a struggle for the Jasper, Indiana native. In 130 games at Triple-A last season, Montgomery had a slash line of .214/.329/.381 for an OPS of .710. Thankfully, the Southridge High School product had a better Arizona Fall League appearance, where he slashed .313/.511/.656 for an OPS of 1.167 in 11 games. If that version of Montgomery can appear this season, the White Sox might have the next American League Rookie of the Year on their hands.

Hopefully, this doesn’t develop further

Thankfully, these spasms got caught earlier, and Montgomery didn’t try to play through it, which could’ve made things worse.

With some rest and time off, Montgomery should be back and ready to play the rest of spring.

Hopefully, once Montgomery returns, he will start to look like the player we saw in the AFL.

The Chicago White Sox enter 2025 looking for their youth to lead the way after the front office moved on from several core veterans in the offseason. The White Sox are rebuilding following a 41-121 record in 2024, one of the worst records in modern MLB history.

The White Sox saw a promising at-bat for one of their top prospects this spring during their first Cactus League game of the year against the Chicago Cubs in front of 14,746 fans at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona.

Colson Montgomery, the No. 22 pick in the 2021 draft, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning of his first Cactus League appearance of 2025. The two runs were the first of the day for Chicago.

“White Sox fans will love to see that!” Colson Montgomery (MLB’s No. 39 prospect) hammers a two-run homer in his 2025 Cactus League debut.

Montgomery went .214/.329/.381 during 2024 for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. The lefty-batter from Jasper, Indiana, added 18 home runs, 63 RBI, and eight stolen bases based for Charlotte.

The White Sox added Montgomery to their 40-man roster in November. At 22, Chicago is hoping their youthful shortstop will elevate his game in 2025.

The Chicago Cubs defeated the White Sox 7-3. The Sox will next play the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

The Chicago White Sox just recently released their list of players they will be inviting to this year’s spring training, and it features a decent number of their prospects.

Prospects like Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, and Kyle Teel to name a few will all get a decent amount of looks to see how they all fare against major league caliber hitters, pitchers, and in Teel’s case base stealers.

All three plus three other White Sox prospects made MLB.com and MLB Pipelines’ top 100 prospects list with Schultz performing the best.

Chicago White Sox have six prospects who make the top 100

The six players that were so honored were: left-hander Noah Schultz at No. 16, catcher Kyle Teel at No. 32, lefty Hagen Smith at No. 34, shortstop Colson Montgomery at No. 39, outfielder Braden Montgomery at No. 55, and catcher Edgar Quero at No. 66. All have a chance to possibly be on the White Sox 26-man roster this season, except for Braden Montgomery who was only drafted last year.

Leading the pack is Schultz who is far and away the most exciting prospect of the bunch with been noticeable as soon as he walks into a room with his imposing 6-9 220lbs frame. Schultz was recently rated along with Smith as being the number one and number two best left-handed pitching prospects in all of baseball and it’s not hard to see why.

Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round 26th overall in the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft from Oswego East HS in Oswego, IL. So far in two short seasons in the minor leagues, Schultz has been exceptional accumulating a record of 1-6 with a dazzling 2.03 ERA, with 153 strikeouts in 115.1 innings pitched. That is good enough for a strikeout per nine of 11.9.

Schultz has an elite mix of pitches with his slider being rated as a plus-plus pitch and grading at 70/80. His fastball isn’t too far behind at 60/80, with a decent changeup at 55/80, and above-average control at 55/80. MLB.com describes Schutlz and his arsenal as:

“With his 6-foot-9 frame and low three-quarters arm slot, Schultz creates exceptional horizontal movement on a wipeout slider that continues to gain velocity — now sitting in the low 80s and reaching 88 mph. He has boosted his fastball from 89-92 mph in high school to 93-97 with a peak of 99 mph as a pro. He blows four-seamers by hitters up in the strike zone but doesn’t miss many bats when he tries to sink heavy two-seamers, generating a lot of ground-ball contact instead.”

Schultz was one of the players who the White Sox will be invited to spring training and will get a ton of looks against major league caliber hitters to possibly make the team for Opening Day

Hagen Smith

Smith is not too far behind Schutlz with also displaying plus stuff and having the ability to be a top-of-the-rotation piece as well. The 21-year-old Smith was Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round fifth overall of the 2024 MLB June Amateur Draft from the University of Arkansas. In his brief three games started at High-A Winston-Salem had a 0-1 record with a 3.52 ERA, with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Smith is one of those rare left-handers who throws a splitter as his offspeed pitch, and it is graded at 50/80 and has the potential to be a weapon for him if he can master it. All of Smith’s pitches play well off of each other with his funky three-quarters arm angle being his release point, which especially for left-handed hitters will be hard to pick up. Barring anything amazing in spring training Smith will figure to start this season in either Double or Triple-A to start the season.

Kyle Teel

Teel was one of the players to come over to the White Sox in the deal that sent Garrett Crochet over to the Boston Red Sox. Teel was also listed as one of the players who will be invited to spring training and get more than enough reps to see if he can win the starting catcher role. Teel has a good shot to do so with having a career slash line of .301/.404/.444 with an OPS of .848.

According to MLB.com, they describe Teel at the plate as being a quiet hitter with a simple approach that can be a solid offensive player one day.

“Teel has a sound left-handed swing, a disciplined approach, and a higher offensive ceiling than most catchers. He uses the entire field, with most of his home run power going to his pull side. He should hit for average while drawing plenty of walks and providing 15-20 homers per year.”

I wrote recently of Colson Montgomery with General Manager Chris Getz stating in an interview that Montgomery has as good a chance as anyone to win the starting shortstop position out of spring training.

Braden Montgomery and Edgar Quero

Braden Montgomery has the chance to possibly be an elite corner outfielder one day with MLB having his best grades being his power at 60/80 and having an elite arm at 70/80. Montgomery has average grades for hit-hitting ability at 50/80 and is an average fielder with that being the same grade. Montgomery will start his season in the minor leagues after only being drafted last season by the Red Sox, but he does have an invite to spring training to see what he can do.

For Quero, he is advanced offensively with his bat being decently graded at 55/80 and having average pop at 50/80. The knock on Quero is he is not the best defensively and will start the year next season as the starting catcher at Triple-A so he can work on his receiving ability and figure out how to handle a pitching staff.

Exciting times for the White Sox

Even though the White Sox set Major League Baseball’s historic record for losses in a season at 121, there is so much to be excited for this season.

Schultz, Smith, Teel, and Colson Montgomery all have the best shots at breaking camp with the White Sox and being key contributors to help speed up the rebuild.

Fans should be eager to see what happens this spring and how well all these guys to being they will at some point be on the White Sox roster soon.

The Chicago White Sox are set to have one of the more exciting spring trainings in recent memory, and it will feature most of the team’s top prospects.

With a few positional battles like at shortstop where number four overall prospect Colson Montgomery will try to win the starting job and top prospects Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith coming and flashing their talents to show they are ready to join the starting rotation.

All this competition will be fun to watch with the White Sox recently releasing the names of the players they will be inviting to spring training this season.

The White Sox recently released on their X account a list of 24 players that will be invited to spring training this season with a chance to win a spot on the 26-man roster. The White Sox recently signed eight players to minor-league deals that will all have non-roster invites to spring training. The most notable of those names is Andre Lipcius who the Sox signed from the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. The 26-year-old will figure to be in the mix for the open third base job with new signee Josh Rojas potentially seeing time at shortstop.

The White Sox will also be bringing up some of their top prospects including 3/4 players that were included in the Garrett Crochet deal. The White Sox will also be bringing up two of their top left-handed pitching prospects Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith to show what they can do against major league hitters.

The youth movement is coming to Arizona

The additions of catcher Kyle Teel, infielder Chase Meidroth, outfielder Braden Montgomery, and lefties Schultz and Smith will lead the youth movement that will be running rampant in spring training. Teel and Meidroth are the only ones who will be competing for spots on the White Sox 26-man roster with Schultz and Smith figuring to start the year in Triple-A. Braden Montgomery will possibly start in Double-A given he is fresh out of college and just getting drafted last season.

For Teel, he is going to be in the running to be the everyday catcher or at the very least be a platoon partner with current starter Korey Lee. Meidroth will be competing for both the middle infield spots that are open with Meidroth possibly being the favorite to win the second base job if he shows out this spring.

As for Schutlz and Smith will possibly start the season in Triple-A unless they blow Chris Getz and Will Venable away. Both were recently named as the top left-handed pitchers, and Schultz was named the top left-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball in MLB.com latest piece by Joe Trezza.

This will be exciting

This will be one of the more exciting and impactful spring training for the White Sox with them entering a rebuild.

This season may have fans see another 100-loss season, but having all the excitement of the prospects potentially breaking camp out of spring training is one thing we should all be happy about.

The Chicago White Sox have quite a few position player prospects that will make their debuts at some point this season.

One of those top prospects, shortstop Colson Montgomery who is the White Sox No. 4 and MLB No. 37 overall prospect has big expectations coming into this season.

During his recent appearance during Soxfest General Manager of the White Sox, Chris Getz laid out his plans for Montgomery this season.

The future shortstop of the Chicago White Sox

The White Sox drafted the soon-to-be 23-year-old in the first round (22nd overall) in the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. Ranked as the White Sox’s number four overall prospect the 6-3 shortstop has great grades according to MLB.com with his power being his best tool at 60/80. He also has decent grades for both his hit and run which both grade at 50/80. Montgomery also displays a decent glove and has a good arm with both grading at 55/80.

Montgomery has drawn comparisons to Texas Ranger shortstop Corey Seager for his large frame and offensive ceiling according to MLB.com.

“As a large-framed, lefty-hitting shortstop with a huge offensive ceiling, Montgomery has drawn Corey Seager comparisons for years. Like Seager, he has plus power and is tapping into it more often by launching balls in the air more consistently in 2023 and 2024. He has gotten more aggressive and his swing decisions have suffered as a result.“

The Southridge High School graduate did not fair too well offensively down at Triple-A Charlotte last season only hitting .214/.329/.381 for an OPS of .710 in 130 games. Montgomery did show some decent levels of power by mashing 18 HRs, 21 doubles, and tallying 3 triples. Montgomery did however have a solid Arizona Fall League season playing in 11 games hit .313/.511/.656 for an OPS of 1.167 and had more walks (10) than strikeouts (6).

Chris Getz lays out plays for Montgomery’s season

During his recent appearance at Soxfest, Chris Getz laid out the plan for Montgomery this season and when fans could expect to see him this season.

“He’s going to get a lot of opportunity come Spring Training,” said general manager Chris Getz of Montgomery, during Thursday’s pre-SoxFest Live press conference with manager Will Venable at Rate Field. “We expect to see Colson Montgomery playing shortstop for the White Sox this year at some point. He’s a guy that has continued to improve defensively. What he did in August and September and the Fall League, he made some real material changes to cover certain pitches and get back to the player that we had seen throughout the Minor Leagues. He’s going to get a shot to make the club. Now, we’ve got other players on the roster that are going to compete for shortstop opportunities.”

This should give a lot of confidence for Montgomery who could be the White Sox Opening Day shortstop this season. Getz also indicated that infielders Chase Meidroth who was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade, Brooks Baldwin, and newly signed Josh Rojas all will be in the mix to play short this season.

Could Montgomery be the Opening Day shortstop?

The likelihood is high that Montgomery could win the White Sox starting shortstop position with there being an opening at the moment.

If Montgomery can come into spring training and show he is capable of doing what he did in the fall league against major league-caliber pitchers could win him the job.

The White Sox are getting younger and are starting to play their young guys more and Montgomery figures to be a part of those plans with the youth movement incoming to the Southside.

With so many top prospects on MLB.com top 100 list the Chicago White Sox are primed to have one of them take home this year American League Rookie of the Year award.

The Chicago White Sox with being as bad as they’ve been for some time, have acquired a ton of prospects through trades, in order to restock their farm system giving them one of the best in all of Major League Baseball. With having such a successful and plentiful system of young prospects some figure to graduate this season from the minors and contribute this season for the Chicago White Sox at the big-league level. In a recent article published by Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com polled MLB executives asking who they thought this year’s American League Rookie of the Year will be.

Potential Chicago White Sox Rookie of the Year?

MLB: New York Mets at Boston Red Sox Chicago White Sox
MLB: New York Mets at Boston Red Sox

The Chicago White Sox newly acquired catching prospect Kyle Teel who was acquired in the deal that sent Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox, received votes from Jonathon Mayo’s poll of him possibly being a candidate to win this year’s Rookie of the Year award. Kyle Teel’s potential teammate in the future Chicago White Sox number four overall prospect Colson Montgomery, who was also predicted to potentially win the award.

The 23-year-old Kyle Teel is projected to be a potential star once he is in the major leagues with Teel grading well on his scouting report from the MLB. The MLB grades on a scale from 20-80 with 80 being the best grade a player can receive. Kyle Teel’s best quality he has going for him is his arm which grades out at 65/80. Other notable grades to point out are his hit ability which is at a 55/80 and he is graded at a 50/80 for his run.

With only being drafted a year and a half ago Teel has had very little time down on the farm to rack up stats, but in his short time on the farm he didn’t fail to impress. So far in his two seasons for his minor league career Teel has a slash line of .301/.404/.444 with an OPS of .848. For 2024 Teel showed that he was better with the bat than what his grades had him pegged for. In in 112 games played which he split his time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worchester Teel had 123 hits, 23 doubles, 13 HRs, 78 RBI, for a slash line of .288/.386/.433 for an OPS of .819.

Could Kyle Teel win the Rookie of the Year?

Syndication: Worcester Telegram Chicago White Sox one important question
Syndication: Worcester Telegram

Currently the Chicago White Sox have Korey Lee as their starter, but Kyle Teel may give him so competition during spring training with Teel saying he should be in big-league spring training camp for this season. Lee for his part with the White Sox last year in 125 games Lee only managed to hit .210/.244/.347 and an OPS of .591. Still just 26-years-old Lee could turn it around at the plate and with him showing the ability to play other positions during his time in the minor leagues, the White Sox could figure to move him somewhere else in favor of Teel behind the plate.

With Teel projected to be in big-league camp for this spring to compete for a spot on the Major League roster, Teel will have a good of a chance to make the Chicago White Sox 26-man roster out of spring training. If Kyle Teel can carry over the success, he had down in the minor leagues so far into spring training and into the season, then he should give his former teammate and the Boston Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony a run for his money.

The Chicago White Sox have one important question that looms over them for this upcoming season.

Coming into spring training the Chicago White Sox will have a lot of questions they will need to have answered like can their young starting staff give them a full workload for a full season, what will they get from their top prospects who figure to play a key roles for the Chicago White Sox in 2025, and what will they get out of their highest paid players and veterans in outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr.

The most important question however, which will fall into the hands of newly minted skipper Will Venable will be, how will he manage the balance of playing his veteran players as well as mixing in the young players who need their reps as well?

The offseason for the Chicago White Sox thus far

MLB: Chicago White Sox Press Conference one important question
MLB: Chicago White Sox Press Conference

The White Sox and Senior Vice President and General Manager Chris Getz have had a very productive offseason up to this point. The Chicago White Sox biggest moves this offseason were trading away their most valuable asset in Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for a package of prospect that will be key parts to their rebuild and could help the White Sox as soon as this year. As well as signing versatile infielder Josh Rojas to a one-year deal who will be in the running to be the starting third basemen and hope he can bounce-back offensively in the hopes of trading him at next year’s trade deadline.

The White Sox also added to their pitching depth by signing veteran Bryse Wilson to a one-year deal in the hopes he has a bounce back season. The White Sox also went out and made a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies acquiring lefty Tyler Gilbert to give them a look from the left side out of their starting rotation.

Spring Training 2025

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels
MLB: Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels

The White Sox will look to enter 2025 having a better season than they did in 2024 which led them to having the worst loss record in MLB History at 121 losses. The White Sox set the record with a 4-1 loss to division rival Detroit Tigers in a game played back in September of last season. The likelihood of that happening again is very slim, but the White Sox still may be looking at over 100 losses, so they’re not fully out of the woods yet.

With that being said, there is something to be excited for when watching the 2025 Chicago White Sox and that’s the plethora of prospects they have coming up and having a young and hungry manager in Will Venable providing guidance to those young players along with having those key veterans in Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. looking to show they can come into spring healthy and ready go.

In particular Luis Robert Jr. and the question of his health which limited him to only one hundred games last year and affected him offensively. Both Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. need to have bounce-back seasons offensively so it can boost their trade value, which will be important for the Chicago White Sox.

The important question that needs to be answered?

Syndication: Worcester Telegram Chicago White Sox one important question
Syndication: Worcester Telegram

The biggest question for the Chicago White Sox coming into this season will be, how will manager Will Venable balance playing his veteran players as well as mixing in his young players who will need their reps as well? Getting their young guys in is key for their development in order for the White Sox to see who will sink or swim. It is also important that the veteran guys like newly signed outfielders Austin Slater and Mike Tauchman to see time as well, being they need to have good seasons for the White Sox to get at least somewhat of a decent prospect in return for them in a trade.

Some of the young guys who will figure to be in the mix for some of the positions that the Chicago White Sox have open are number two overall prospect catcher Kyle Teel who could be in play to win the starting catching position. As well as number six overall prospect Edgar Quero who will start the season in Triple-A so he can work on his defense, but with his bat being ready to go, if an injury occurs at the catching position, could figure to be the first to get the call up.

Then there’s the White Sox top two pitching prospects in lefties Noah Schultz (No. 1 overall, MLB No. 16 prospect) and Hagen Smith (No. 3 overall, MLB No. 30 prospect) who will both start the 2025 season down in the minors. However, both Schultz and Smith could quickly force the hand of the Chicago White Sox and call them up if they prove to have success in the first month or two of next season.

Finding the balance will be key to being decent in 2025

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels
MLB: Chicago White Sox at Los Angeles Angels

The Chicago White Sox striking the balance of mixing in their veterans in with their young prospects will be key for them to at least be decent in for the 2025 season. Yes, it still could be a little ugly, but if both the veterans and the young guys can contribute better than they did last year, there are some bright spots coming down the way for the White Sox.

Could one of the Chicago White Sox’s top prospects win ROTY?

With the Chicago White Sox in the midst of their rebuild one thing fans can be excited about is the amount of young talent they will get to see in the new year. With so much young talent coming up on the roster the White Sox have a better chance than most teams to have one of their young stars win the Rookie of the Year Award.

Eligibility for the Rookie of the Year Award

Jose Abreu top prospects
Chicago White Sox’ Jose Abreu

To be eligible to become the Rookie of the Year according to Major League Baseball one must:

A player shall be considered a rookie unless he has exceeded any of the following thresholds in a previous season (or seasons):

• 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues.
• 45 total days on an active Major League roster during the Championship Season (excluding time on the Injured List).

A player must have rookie eligibility to be considered for any MLB rookie awards — such as the American League or National League Rookie of the Year Award — or appear on any MLB Pipeline prospect lists”

The White Sox last ROTY winner was first basemen José Abreu who won the award back in 2014. Where he played in 145 games, had 176 hits, 35 doubles, 2 triples, 36 HRs, 107 RBI, for a .317/.383/.581 for an OPS and OPS+ of .964 and 173. Abreu also won the Silver Slugger award, as well as was named an ALL-Star, and finished fourth in the Most Valuable Player voting.

So Many Options to Choose From

The White Sox have a better chance than most teams to have one of their players win the most coveted award a rookie can win in baseball and that’s the Rookie of the Year Award. Shortstop Colson Montgomery is the most likely rookie on the White Sox roster to win the award.

Colson Montgomery

MLB: Chicago White Sox Workouts
MLB: Chicago White Sox Workouts

The 22-year old was protected on the team’s 40-man roster earlier this winter to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. Montgomery is the White Sox #3 prospect and is ranked by the MLB as their #37 overall prospect.

Drafted by the White Sox in the 1st round (22nd overall) of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft, the 6’3” Montgomery spent the 2024 season at Triple-A where he struggled overall. In 130 games Montgomery hit 18 HRs, 21 Doubles, 3 Triples, 63 RBIs, and 69 BBs in 485 At-Bats while slashing .214/.329/.381 for a .710 OPS.

Even though Montgomery had a disappointing 2024 campaign, there may be a bright spot to look forward to. Participating in last year’s Arizona Fall League, Montgomery in 11 games (32 at-bats) had 2 doubles, 3 HRs, 11 RBI, 4 stolen bases, 10 BBs, and slashed .313/.511/.656 with an OPS of 1.167. Even in a small sample size such as this, these numbers should be something that Chicago White Sox fans should be excited about.

Colson Montgomery will come into spring training with having the starting shortstop job be his job to lose basically. The Chicago White Sox are in need of a solid defensive shortstop who they can rely to play on every day and give them a solid bat at the top of their lineup. Not having a reliable shortstop since they had Tim Anderson who they let walk in free agency back in 2023.

Chase Meidroth

Syndication: Worcester Telegram
Syndication: Worcester Telegram

Acquired in the deal that shipped left-hander Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox, Meidroth is currently ranked as the White Sox’s #13 prospect and, in my opinion, is the most exciting player coming into spring training for the White Sox. His grades when looking at his Baseball Savant just don’t do him justice because all indicators point to Meidroth being a really good hitter at the Major League level.

Last season in Triple-A for the Boston Red Sox Meidroth played in 122 games where he had 128 hits, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 7 HRs, 57 RBI, having 105 walks while only striking out 71 times, for a slash line of .293/.437/.401 for an OPS of .838. The thing that stands out for Meidroth is that strikeout to walk ratio, which shows a good eye for the ball and the reason for the high average and OBP.

Meidroth’s ability to walk more than he strikes out is an underrated talent that the White Sox should be excited about. With the ability to play second, third, and shortstop Meidroth has a good chance to make the roster coming out of spring training given their needs at second, third, and having a versatile infielder to come off the bench. Meiroth has a really good shot if all goes well to win a spot on the roster out of spring training and even a starting job.

If Chase Meidroth can take what he did offensively into spring training and break camp with the Chicago White Sox and keep the success going through the season I wouldn’t be surprised if his name was announced as one of the finalists for the Rookie of the Year.

Catching prospect Kyle Teel also has a good chance to break camp with the Chicago White Sox and also be eligible to win the Rookie of the Year award if he does well and makes the team. As I said the White Sox have a really good chance to have one of their young players win Rookie of the Year whether it be Colson Montgomery or Chase Meiroth, whoever brings the award home for the White Sox will bring a beacon of hope to the fan base.

The Chicago White Sox have one of the best farm systems in baseball and that talent will be hitting the big leagues soon. Here’s a look at Chicago’s four highest-ranked infield prospects, Per MLB.com:

Colson Montgomery (No. 4 Prospect)

MLB: Spring Training Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox,Colson Montgomery
MLB: Spring Training Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox

Montgomery, a left-handed hitter, continues to solidify his status as a promising prospect. At 22 years old, he spent the 2024 season at Double-A, putting up respectable numbers. His smooth, compact swing allows him to consistently make hard contact, and his ability to adjust to advanced pitching bodes well for his offensive ceiling. His keen plate discipline adds to his profile, with a walk rate that suggests a polished approach well beyond his years.

Defensively, Montgomery primarily plays at shortstop, but has shown the versatility to handle third base as well. His glove work is steady, and his strong, accurate arm is a notable asset. While his foot speed is average, his instincts and positioning help him maximize his range.

Montgomery projects as a high-contact hitter with gap-to-gap power and the potential to develop into an everyday contributor at the major league level.

Caleb Bonemer (No. 12 Prospect)

Caleb Bonemer, a right-handed hitting shortstop/third basemen, has emerged as an intriguing prospect known for his athleticism and potential at the plate. In 2024, the 19-year-old played rookie ball and turned some heads with his raw ability. Bonemer’s aggressive swing and solid plate coverage allow him to drive the ball consistently, and his improving power suggests there’s more to come as he fills out physically.

Defensively, Bonemer has shown versatility, splitting time between shortstop and third base. His speed and strong arm make him a reliable defender, capable of covering ground effectively and making accurate throws. On the bases, he uses his speed intelligently, turning singles into doubles and creating pressure on opposing defenses.

Chase Meidroth (No. 13 Prospect)

Meidroth, an infielder with a right-handed bat who came to the White Sox in the Garrett Crochet trade, continues to make strides as a well-rounded prospect. The 23-year-old spent the 2024 season at Triple-A, showcasing his hitting ability and baseball IQ. Meidroth posted a .293 batting average in 558 plate appearances, hitting 7 home runs. His strong plate discipline stands out, as he consistently works deep counts and rarely expands the zone, making him a tough out. While his power is more gap-oriented than home-run-driven, his ability to barrel the ball gives him offensive value.

Defensively, Meidroth is a reliable presence at second base, with smooth hands and quick footwork. His arm strength is solid enough for occasional time at short stop and third base, but second would be his ideal spot on the field. While not a burner, his instincts and hustle make him an asset on the bases.

Jacob Gonzalez (No. 15 Prospect)

Syndication: The Clarion Ledger,jacob gonzalez
Syndication: The Clarion Ledger

Gonzalez, a left-handed hitting shortstop, continues to impress with his combination of offensive consistency and defensive reliability. At 22 years of age, his smooth swing and advanced plate approach enable him to hit to all fields, and his ability to handle quality pitching highlights his potential as a top-tier hitter. Gonzalez’s power is developing, with signs he could consistently reach 20+ home runs per season at his peak.

Defensively, Gonzalez is a steady presence at shortstop. His range is average, but his quick reactions, smooth glove work, and strong arm make him a dependable defender. He also has the versatility to handle second or third base if needed.

Gonzalez’s blend of offensive tools and defensive skill set projects him as an everyday middle infielder who, eventually, may have top shift to second base or third base.

The Chicago White Sox will enter this year Spring Training with some interesting positional battles that fans should be excited to watch.

As the off season still rolls along there’s only seven weeks left till pitchers and catcher report to their respective spring training facilities on February 10th, 2025. With the Chicago White Sox pretty much done all their big moves for this off season, outside of still trying to trade Luis Robert Jr., the roster how it looks now is pretty much what fans will see come Spring Training.

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago White Sox

The White Sox will look to enter 2025 having a a better season than they did in 2024 which lead them to having the worst loss record in MLB History at 121. The White Sox set the record with a 4-1 loss to division rival Detroit Tigers. The likelihood of that happening again is very slim, but the White Sox still may be looking at over 100 losses so they’re not fully out of the woods yet.

MLB: Winter Meetings

With that being said, there is something to be excited for when watching the 2025 Chicago White Sox and that’s the plethora of prospects they have coming up and the positional battles fans will be seeing from those prospects who are vying for a spot on the Major League roster. As well as having a new young and hungry manager in Will Venable who will ultimately be the one to decide who will win the positional battles and takeover over the starting jobs for catcher, second base, shortstop and third base.

Catcher

Korey Lee

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox
MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox

The White Sox currently at catcher will have three guys competing for the starting job as well as the backup position. Currently on the Chicago White Sox 40-man roster they have two catchers Korey Lee and Matt Thaiss who was recently acquired for cash considerations from cross town rival Chicago Cubs. Lee who currently holds the starting job has so far not impressed in his short time with the White Sox. Last year in 125 games Lee only managed to hit .210/.244/.347 and an OPS of .591.

The White Sox did have three catchers on their 40-man, until they traded away Chuckie Robinson to the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations. The possibility however of newly acquired catching prospect Kyle Teel who was acquired in the Garrett Crochet deal, hinted on a recent episode of Foul Territory that he will be in big league spring training camp.

Kyle Teel

The 22-year-old Teel who since being acquired is now the Chicago White Sox #2 overall prospect in their organization according to MLB.com as well as MLB #25 overall prospect.  When looking at Teel’s grades of his tools which is on a scale from 20-80 with 80 being the best, Teel’s best quality he has going for him is his arm which grades out at 65/80 according to Baseball Savant. Other notable grades to point out are his hit ability (55/80) and for a catcher he is graded at a 50/80 for his run which is very impressive.

With only being drafted a year and a half ago Teel has had very little time down on the farm to rack up stats, but in his short time on the farm he hasn’t ceased to impress. So far in his two season down in the minor leagues Teel has a career slash line of .301/.404/.444 with an OPS of .848.

Syndication: Worcester Telegram
Syndication: Worcester Telegram

For his 2024 season Teel had an absolutely incredible season between Double and Triple A. In 112 games between the two levels Kyle Teel accumulated 123 hits, 23 doubles, 13 HRS, 78 RBI, 12 stolen bases (impressive for a catcher), and had a slash line of .288/.386/.433 with an OPS of .819. For his fielding Teel sports a career .986 fielding percentage as well as being able to throw out 22% of potential base stealer for his career. Kyle Teel has a very good chance to break camp with the club if he performs well. Pay close attention to this positional battle because it has the makings of being a really exciting one.

Middle Infield

Colson Montgomery

The middle infield is another area where there should bear some fruitful competition. For the shortstop position #3 overall prospect for the Chicago White Sox organization and MLB’s #37 overall prospect Colson Montgomery has the best chance to win the spot out of spring training. Added to the 40-man roster on November 20th to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft Montgomery will in fact be in Big League camp vying for the starting job.

The 22-year-old Montgomery who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1st round (22nd overall) of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft, the 6’3” Montgomery spent the 2024 season at Triple-A where he struggled overall. In 130 games Montgomery managed to hit 18 HRs, 21 Doubles, 3 Triples, 63 RBIs, and 69 BBs in 485 At-Bats, while slashing .214/.329/.381 for a .710 OPS.

MLB: Spring Training Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox
MLB: Spring Training Cleveland Guardians at Chicago White Sox

Even though Montgomery had a disappointing 2024 campaign, there may be a bright spot to look forward to. Participating in this year’s Arizona Fall League, Montgomery in 11 games (32 at-bats) had 2 doubles, 3 HRs, 11 RBI, 4 stolen bases, 10 BBs, and slashed .313/.511/.656 with an OPS of 1.167. Even in a small sample size such as this these numbers should be something that Chicago White Sox fans should be excited about and should bode well for him coming into Spring Training.

Brooks Baldwin

MLB: Chicago White Sox at San Francisco Giants
MLB: Chicago White Sox at San Francisco Giants

The 24-year-old Baldwin spent 2024 for the most part in the Minor Leagues splitting time between Double and Triple A, as well getting some time in the big leagues playing 33 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2024. Overall, in the minor’s last season Baldwin in 82 games had 102 hits, 19 doubles, 8 HRs, 41 RBI, 17 stolen bases (5 caught stealing), and had a slash line of .324/.391/.460 for an OPS of .851. In his 33 games with the big-league club Baldwin faired as good as a rookie could fare coming up for the first time. Baldwin had 24 hits, 6 doubles, 8 RBI, 2 HRs, 4 stolen bases, for a slash line of .211/.250/.316 with and OPS of .566.

Baldwin during his time in the major’s split time between second (24 games) and shortstop (9 games) where he fared better at the shortstop position. Having a 1.000 fielding percentage in 27 (76.0 innings) chances committing no errors, 8 putouts and helped turn 9 double plays. To note Baldwin still has all three of his minor league options according to FanGraphs.

Lenyn Sosa

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

The soon to be 25-year-old Sosa (January 25th) will figure to be in the mix for the second base opening as well as maybe seeing some time over at third base. Last season Sosa played 47 games at second base last season (374.1 innings) where he had a fielding percentage of .988 (league avg. .983), committed just 2 errors in 163 chances, all while helping turn 31 double plays. At the plate Sosa had a decent season and entering his fourth year in the Major Leagues he is primed to take a step forward.

MLB: Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox

In 100 games with the Chicago White Sox Sosa had 89 hits, 13 doubles, 8 HRs, 35 RBI, with a slash line of .254/.283/.359 with and OPS and OPS+ of .642 and 84. The one statistic that stands out when looking at his Baseball Savant page is that he ranks in the 99th percentile for LA Sweet-Spot% at 42.2%. Sosa will most likely be competing with Brooks Baldwin as well as Chase Meidroth who was also brought over in the Garrett Crochet trade.

Chase Meidroth

Syndication: Worcester Telegram

Currently ranked as the Chicago White Sox #13 prospect is in my opinion the most exciting player coming into spring training.

The thing that stands out for Meidroth is that strikeout to walk ratio, that show a good eye for the ball and the reason for the high average and OBP. Meiroth has a really good shot if all goes well to win the position out of spring training.

Third Base

Miguel Vargas

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

The main two players competing for the starting third base position will be Miguel Vargas who was acquired at last year’s trade deadline with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Bryan Ramos. Vargas in 72 games last season had 31 hits, 7 doubles, 5 HRs, 16 RBI, for a slash line of .150/.249/.257 for an OPS and OPS+ of .506 and 46. Not great, but there still is room for improvement and if all else fails and he loses out on the starting job Vargas could figure to be the Chicago White Sox utility man off the bench with his ability to play first base, second base, and leftfield.

Bryan Ramos

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers
MLB: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

Bryan Ramos like Brooks Baldwin spent time down at Double and Triple-A as well as getting sometime in the big leagues. In 88 games down on the farm Ramos had 80 hits, 18 doubles, 10 HRs, 44 RBI, for a slash line of .242/.328/.387 for an OPS of .707. In 32 games with the Chicago White Sox Ramos had 20 hits, 4 doubles, 3 HRs, 11 RBI, for a slash line of .202/.252/.333 for and OPS of .586.

Just as it stands as I said Lenyn Sosa will also see time at third base and if he ends up performing better offensively than either Ramos or Varges then he could overtake them as the starter. Both Vargas and Sosa are out of minor league options so they will both figure to be on the MLB roster, while Ramos still has one option remaining if the Chicago White Sox need to use it.

MLB: Chicago White Sox Press Conference
MLB: Chicago White Sox Press Conference

All in all I have faith that both Chris Getz and Will Venable know exactly what they’re doing and they’re going out and finding under the radar talent to help improve this roster. Like signing former Dodger farmhand Andre Lipcius who will also compete for the third base position and has an invite to Spring Training. Even though last season was abysmal to put it mildly, the future does look bright for the Chicago White Sox.

Shortstop and #3 prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization Colson Montgomery must be protected from The Rule 5 Draft.

UPDATE: Colson Montgomery as well as RHP Juan Carela were added to the 40-man roster per MLB Trade Rumors

Tuesday, November 19th at 6 p.m. is the deadline for when MLB teams have to finalize their 40-man roster with players who are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft which will take place in December. This year the Chicago White Sox have three names eligible for this years draft, one of whom is #3 prospect Shortstop Colson Montgomery.

What is the Rule 5 Draft?

The Rule 5 Draft is a draft that is: “Held each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man roster players from other clubs. Clubs draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season. Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club’s 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons.”

The 22-year old Montgomery is the Chicago White Sox #3 prospect and is ranked by the MLB as their #37 overall prospect. Drafted by the White Sox in the 1st round (22nd overall) of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft, the 6’3” Montgomery spent the 2024 season at Triple-A where he struggled overall. In 130 games Montgomery managed to hit 18 HRs, 21 Doubles, 3 Triples, 63 RBIs, and 69 BBs in 485 At-Bats, while slashing .214/.329/.381 for a .710 OPS.

Currently the Chicago White Sox have 38 players on their 40-man roster with the recent signing of Austin Slater so there’s still wiggle room for them to add Colson Montgomery and possible another player through sign or trade. Montgomery once added to the 40-man figures to be the everyday Shortstop come 2025 with the White Sox deciding to move on from Nicky Lopez who played the bulk of the game there last season.

The 22-year old Montgomery has a lot of expectations behind him coming into this season. The hope is that he can prove to be the player we’re seeing in the Arizona Fall League and not who the one from last season, even though he had an above .700 OPS which is a good sign. The Chicago White Sox are certainly going to retain Colson and most likely have him be their opening day Shortstop that they intend to build around.

Chicago White Sox prospect Norge Vera has been promoted to double-A Birmingham

Last week a slue of White Sox prospects were promoted to double A Birmingham in a movement called “Project Birmingham”. This movement included seeing top prospect overall Colson Montgomery and NO.5 overall prospect Bryan Ramos making the jump to double A. While it is exciting to see a team’s best prospects rise through the ranks, sometimes in all the hype surrounding some of the top prospects, others get overlooked.

While Norge Vera is not necessarily overlooked being the White Sox No.6 overall prospect. He is proving that he wants a piece of that potential future star hype himself. Vera has turned heads ever since he has entered the organization. In the Dominican summer league in 2021 Vera struck out 34 batters in 19 innings and only allowed 9 hits. That is a 16.1 SO/9 clip. Clearly Vera has electric stuff. Vera backed up his performance in the summer league in 2022 by being promoted three times in a single season. So far in the 2022 season Vera has pitched 30 innings and struck out 44 batters while only allowing 15 hits posting a filthy 13.2 SO/9.  Vera has also struck out 50% of the batters he’s faced so far in double A (small sample size). Norge Vera also limits the long ball. He has only given up a single homer so far this season which is exactly what you want to see with someone that has the potential to be a future closer.

Norge Vera has serious roots in Cuban baseball history

Norge Luis Vera… el silencio de un hombre grande – SwingCompleto

Norge Vera was signed by the White sox out of the 2020-21 international class for $1.5 million. Vera is the son of Cuban baseball star Norge Luis Vera. Vera’s father won 9 gold medals including a gold medal at the 2004 olympic games. Norge Vera Sr also completed one of the best seasons a pitcher in professional baseball can have. In the 1999-2000 season Vera Sr went 17-2 with 12 of those wins being complete games and 8 of the complete games being complete game shutouts. Vera also pitched to the tune of an unholy 0.97 ERA. He was practically invincible on the mound. If Norge Vera Jr can pitch anything like his father, the White Sox have an absolute stud just waiting in the wings.

Here’s a youtube video if you want to know more about Vera and his background.

Colson Montgomery gets another promotion within the White Sox organization, his second promotion this season for the 2021 draft pick.

Colson Montgomery continues his rocket trajectory through the minors after he was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox in 2021. The 6-foot-4 shortstop has been on fire this season and will move up to double-A Birmingham from high single-A.

Montgomery is already rated as the White Sox number one overall prospect.  In high-A he’s batting .295 with nine homers and 48 RBIs this season.  At one point this season Montgomery enjoyed a streak in which he reached base safely in 50 straight games.

Colson Montgomery’s progress in Double-A Birmingham will be monitored closely by White Sox fans as the big league team is in desperate need of help at SS.  If Colson Montgomery does well in Double-A he could earn an invitation to spring training next year and from there, anything is possible.

We take a look at where Chicago White Sox prospect Colson Montgomery landed in the updated rankings

Colson Montgomery, the current #1 prospect for the Chicago White Sox, is playing spectacular baseball.  Scouts around the league are beginning to take notice.  Baseball America recently released their mid-season top 100 prospect rankings.

Montgomery slots in at number 53 on the newly released rankings.  At the beginning of the season, he did not even rank in the top 100!  For a prospect to move up so many spots in half a season is truly remarkable and should have White Sox fans excited for Montgomery’s future.

Montgomery was drafted in 2021 by the White Sox as the #22 overall pick in the draft.  For fans that do not know much about him yet, certainly will soon enough.  Indiana’s 2020-21 male high school athlete of the year is turning heads.  His on base streak sits at an absurd 45 straight games!

Colson Montgomery’s successful debut in Arizona Complex League

In 2021, Montgomery played 26 games in the Arizona league.  He immediately produced a .287, .396, .362 slash line in these games.  He also scored 16 runs along with 27 hits, 7 of them being doubles.  Montgomery immediately showed he belonged with solid production, and has only continued to improve as he moves up in level of competition.

2022 single A ball in Winston-Salem and Kannapolis

So far this baseball season, Colson Montgomery has continued to rake.  He holds an active on base streak of 45 straight games as of July 10th.  It took only 13 games with the Winston-Salem Dash for Montgomery to be promoted to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.  In 58 total games with both ball clubs, Montgomery has posted a .326, .431, and .484 slash line.

He has produced 21 extra base hits so far this season, with 6 being homers along with 33 runs batted in.  His patience at the plate has been spectacular.  Montgomery boasts a .915 OPS and 36 walks.

What lies ahead for the #1 White Sox prospect?

It is difficult to predict what comes next for Colson Montgomery.  Whether he will have a spot on the big league roster in the future, or if he will become an enticing trade piece for management.  It’s important to remember that his primary position is shortstop.  As we know, the White Sox now have a 2 time all-star at that position, in Tim Anderson.

What is undeniable, is that Montgomery’s stock is rising and rising fast! His performance in the one year he’s been in the White Sox system, show that they might have hit it out of the park with this draft selection.

Shortstop Colson Montgomery takes the top spot in the updated Chicago White Sox prospect rankings.

The updated 2022 MLB pipeline prospect rankings for the Chicago White Sox have been released, and a new face has taken the top spot on the list.  That would be 20 year old shortstop Colson Montgomery who was drafted by the White Sox in 2021.

Also in the top 5 of the White Sox prospect rankings this year, are outfielders Oscar Colas at number 2, and Yoelqui Cespedes at number 4.  These are two players to watch even closer due to the current hole the White Sox have at right field.

Although the White Sox already have their superstar shortstop in Tim Anderson, Montgomery is certainly a great talent to watch for in the White Sox farm system.

The White Sox farm system certainly is not what it used to be, but that is mostly because those players are now in the big leagues contributing to the team.  However, names like Cespedes, Colas, and Montgomery are great talents that are on their way.

While many feel Cespedes and Colas should be the top spot on the prospects list, it is Montgomery that receives the nod at number 1.

Montgomery has had early comps to players like Corey Seager and is a left-handed bat that hits for power, something that the White Sox could use.  Finding a spot in the lineup for him is going to be the big thing to watch as he could potentially make a move to third base if needed.

The most important take away?  The White Sox still possess nice talent that could contribute in future years. The consensus with the White Sox these days is that the time to win is now.

Nonetheless, there is nothing wrong with smiling in regards to the future of White Sox baseball ay Tony La Russa?

The White Sox 2022 season begins April 8th in Detriot against the Tigers.
