The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been in a spot where they have seen some major changes to their roster following the 2025 season. There were rumors swirling about coach Marcus Freeman potentially jumping to the NFL and leaving the program, but we have gotten some major news regarding that situation.

Marcus Freeman decides to stay with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Freeman has decided to remain with the Fighting Irish in 2026. Freeman would also confirm this with a post saying so on Twitter/X. This is after multiple NFL teams have shown at least some interest in hiring the 2024 Bryant Coach of the Year. There were rumors that the New York Giants were basically ready to hand him the reins to the team, but it appears that he will be staying in South Bend for at least the 2026 season.
As a result of his staying with Notre Dame, he has also agreed to a restructured contract, putting his compensation in the “top tier” of college coaches. His contract was originally signed last season and had him under contract through the 2031 season. With the Fighting Irish looking to find a way back into the College Football Playoff after being on the outside this season, this is a major step for the team moving forward.

Freeman has had incredible success in the five years with the program. He’s posted a 43-12 record, including 5-2 in bowl games.
However, after missing the College Football Playoff this season, the team opted out of playing a bowl game. It will be intriguing to see how the team does going forward. But he will still be calling the shots for the Fighting Irish.
