The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have seen significant changes from the roster that was the first team out of the College Football Playoff rankings. With some players entering the NFL Draft or the NCAA Transfer Portal, things are going to look different in South Bend. However, there will be another player who has decided to officially retire from college football altogether. Let’s take a deeper dive into the captain who made this decision.
Notre Dame captain Donovan Hinish announces retirement from football

In an Instagram post on Monday afternoon, Hinish posted photos from his playing career with the caption reading, “To say it was a blessing is an understatement, thank you for everything ND.”
Hinish still had another year of college eligibility remaining and saw his brother, Kurt, parlay his success with the Fighting Irish into a multi-year career. However, he has decided to hang up the cleats. Back in November, coach Marcus Freeman discussed how he believes Hinish is a “high achiever.”
“And high achievers are consistent, right? He consistently chooses hard. When I think of Donovan Hinish, I think of a guy that just from where he’s from, how he was raised from his parents, his brother and sister, he is a guy that that’s who he is. He’s a guy that consistently chooses hard. And when you do that enough in practice, then all of a sudden it happens in a game that becomes who you are. And he’s a tough, tough guy battling through injuries and continuing to put team first.”
Hinish wraps up his career with 57 total tackles (29 solo, 28 assisted), 6.5 sacks, and one pass deflection over three years. It will be difficult for Notre Dame to replace one of its captains both on and off the field. It will be intriguing to see if he joins the coaching staff in some capacity or will just step away from the program altogether.
