Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has been heavily linked to two NFL jobs in recent months: the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.

The Giants have their eyes on former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh as their No. 1 target, followed by former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.
On Tuesday, a third AFC North job became available when Mike Tomlin informed the Steelers he was resigning after suffering a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night.
Not long after Tomlin’s announcement, Freeman revealed he would meet with the media on Wednesday afternoon.
“Marcus Freeman is speaking to the media in a press conference setting on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET,” Tyler Horka of On3 posted on X. “It’s the first time Freeman has been made available in this capacity since Notre Dame was snubbed from the College Football Playoff.”

It’s unclear what the nature of the press conference would be about.
Freeman was allegedly involved in a police report at a local high school wrestling match over the weekend.
Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman wouldn’t have to interview with Steelers

However, Freeman has also been tied to the NFL in recent days despite signing a contract adjustment with Notre Dame following the end of the 2025 regular season.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported on Sunday that league teams have pretty much disregarded the contract adjustment for Freeman. League teams could bypass the interview process if they wanted to hire Freeman.
“These teams who viewed him highly still believe there is a chance that he comes to the NFL,” Rapoport said. “They still believe Mike (Garafolo) he is a top-tier candidate. Now, it would probably not be like Marcus Freeman come in and interview. It would be they go through the process and then say, ‘This is the guy we want.'”
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday afternoon, Freeman is expected to stay in South Bend for 2026.
“In spite of interest from several NFL teams, Marcus Freeman still is expected to remain at Notre Dame for the 2026 season, per sources,” Schefter posted on X.
With Tomlin out in Pittsburgh, there will be speculation regarding Freeman and the Steelers. Freeman could put that idea to rest in the press conference.
Or he could confirm it.
