Indiana Fever stars Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark have a strong bond both on and off the court. The 29-year-old guard joined Indiana in January 2025 through a high-profile trade from the Phoenix Mercury. She immediately emerged as a team leader and top performer.
Known for her toughness on the court, Cunningham consistently protected her teammates and never backed down from physical play. She showed this during the Fever’s matchup against the Connecticut Sun on June 17.
During the third quarter of the game, tensions escalated after Sun guard Jacy Sheldon and Clark exchanged words following a hard foul. Another Connecticut Sun player, Marina Mabrey, then shoved Clark to the floor, drawing boos from the crowd.
Fans believe Cunningham retaliated later in the game by grabbing Sheldon by the head. She brought Sheldon to the ground while the Sun player was attempting a layup. After reviewing the foul on Sheldon, the referees issued a Flagrant-2 foul and ejected Cunningham from the game.
Since then, Cunningham cemented her role as the Fever’s enforcer. However, a torn MCL cut her season short after 30 games.

WNBA: Sophie Cunningham’s Instagram post sparks playful exchange with Caitlin Clark
Cunningham and Clark have developed a friendship that continues to deepen both on and off the court. They trade playful jabs that show how comfortable they are with each other, and that is evident in their social media interactions.
On Monday, Cunningham posted a lively personal update on Instagram. The 6-foot-1 guard shared a collection of photos highlighting her off-court adventures from the past month. The gallery featured selfies as well as images from parties and outings with friends.

But the post drew extra attention when Clark made a funny comment. “Do u play basketball,” Clark joked, noticing that the glamorous photos included almost no basketball-related activity. Cunningham quickly replied with a witty response.
“do you want me to send you my highlight reel?” challenged Cunningham.
Cunningham’s comment has drawn the attention of fans. As of writing, the remark has attracted over 1,000 likes on Instagram.
The Missouri native is now an unrestricted free agent following the expiration of her contract with the Fever. She is open to returning to Indiana, but has made it clear she wants the highest possible contract.
Amid the WNBA offseason, Cunningham and Clark continue to playfully interact online, teasing each other. Their interactions also reflect the close bond shared throughout the Fever locker room. However, it remains uncertain whether the two stars will remain with the Indiana Fever for the 2026 season.
