Last December, the Chicago White Sox traded star pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox in a deal that netted the White Sox four top prospects, including catcher Kyle Teel.
Teel made his big-league debut for Chicago this past June and was very impressive, slashing .273/.375/.411 with eight home runs and 35 RBI over 297 plate appearances. His defense could definitely stand to improve, but he has shown flashes of potentially being a strong defensive backstop.
Well, apparently, the Red Sox are attempting to re-acquire Teel.
Sean McAdam of MassLive.com has reported that Boston has expressed interest in the former first-round pick but that “nothing is close now” in terms of trade discussions with Chicago.
The question is, why would the White Sox move Teel at this point?

Teel is just 23 years old and displayed considerable potential in 2025. He also owns a lifetime .300/.401/.456 slash line on the minor-league level, and his plate discipline was evident in the 78 games he spent with Chicago’s big-league club this past year.
The White Sox demanded Teel be involved in the Crochet trade for a reason. Unless they can flip him for a much greater return, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense to move him, especially considering that Chicago is in rebuilding mode.
Plus, the Red Sox’s evident interest in Teel is rather strange given that they have Carlos Narvaez behind the plate. Narvaez struggled down the stretch in 2025, but he still posted solid numbers overall and was a Gold Glove finalist for Boston.
Of course, Narvaez is not quite on Teel’s level and is four years older than the White Sox catcher, so perhaps the Red Sox feel that Teel would be a strong enough upgrade to part with substantial capital for him in a trade.
Chances are, Chicago will end up holding on to Teel unless a wild offer comes through.
