A few weeks ago, the Chicago Cubs were just starting Spring Training games. Early on, players participating in the 2026 Word Baseball Classic got priority when it came to playing time, ensuring they were ready for the international tournament.
Unfortunately during game two of Cactus League play. Cubs first base prospect Jonathon long injured his elbow. He subsequently had to withdraw from his commitment to play for the Chinese Taipei in the WBC, and instead focus on getting healthy.
Now, with the WBC well underway, a positive injury update has surfaced on Long.

At 670 The Score, Bruce Levine revealed that Long had a bruised elbow and is cleared to return to baseball activities at the end of the week. This gives him an additional two weeks to ramp back up, which should be plenty of time prior to the season opener. Long doesn’t figure to secure an Opening Day roster spot, but he is someone that club could turn to quickly in Triple-A if needed.
All things considered, the update is an encouraging one for both Long and the organization. Missing out on the WBC is certainly disappointing, but avoiding a more serious injury keeps his development on track heading into the new season. With time still left to ramp up, Long should be able to enter the year healthy and ready to contribute.
