The Chicago White Sox were routed 14–2 by the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Day, as the home team cruised to an easy win. Chase Meidroth’s leadoff homer off Jacob Misiorowski stood out as an early highlight, along with Munetaka Murakami’s first Major League home run. Still, those moments did little to offset an overall poor performance by the Sox, who ended up on the wrong side of history in more ways than one.

After allowing an early run to the White Sox, Brewers starter Misiorowski bounced back in dominant fashion, striking out 11 batters over five innings and generating 25 total whiffs. His 11 strikeouts set a new franchise record for Milwaukee and set the pace for the team to accrue 20 punch outs as a team, also a record.

Colson Montgomery, Miguel Vargas, and Everson Pereira each struck out three times to fuel Milwaukee’s total. Andrew Benintendi, Austin Hays, and Edgar Quero added two apiece, while Chase Meidroth, Lenyn Sosa, Tristan Peters, Reese McGuire, and Derek Hill each had one. Munetaka Murakami and Luisangel Acuña were the only starters who did not record a strikeout.

In the end, Opening Day exposed just how much work lies ahead for the White Sox. While there were a couple of encouraging individual moments, they were overshadowed by a historic level of struggles at the plate. They weren’t any better on the mound either, as they were unable to contain Milwaukee’s offense, with issuing 10 walks not helping their cause.

Setting unwanted records is never the way a team wants to begin a season, and this performance highlighted key issues that must be addressed quickly. If the Sox hope to compete moving forward, they’ll need to regroup, make adjustments, and find consistency on both before these early trends define their season
