The Chicago Cubs are projected to have one of their better seasons since that famous 2016 season. After making the postseason as one of the NL Wild Card teams, they are hungrier than ever. The front office has put a lot of resources into this Cubs team, and they are expected to win a lot of games. What is one MLB writer predicting will happen for the team this season?
The Chicago Cubs are predicted to win the NL Central for the first time since 2020

In a prediction piece for the entire league, MLB’s Will Leitch broke down each division. For the NL Central, he had the Cubs winning the division for the first time since 2020. Below are the standings Leitch predicted:
- Chicago Cubs
- Pittsburgh Pirates (NL Wild Card)
- Milwaukee Brewers
- St. Louis Cardinals
- Cincinnati Reds
The Cubs have not won a division in a full season since 2017. They are in the best position possible to do so with the additions of third baseman Alex Bregman and starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. With the Brewers trading away Freddy Peralta this offseason, there is a major difference in talent entering the year.
The surprise of the Pirates could be intriguing, but there are a lot of things that need to happen in order for this to happen. Chicago feels like the frontrunner to run away with the division crown. With a weaker remainder of the division on paper, this could mean a run at the best record in the National League. Of course, that would include a bye in the NL Wild Card Round.
This also includes star players for Chicago staying healthy. However, this is not a far-fetched prediction for the Cubs entering the regular season. The postseason prediction is not as joyful, though, as he has them losing to the New York Mets in the NLDS. It will be interesting to see how well they can perform throughout the 2026 season.
