The Chicago Cubs continue to see their players have strong showings in the opening games of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. While not all the players competing in the tournament are coming from major-league rosters, some are minor leaguers looking to get a spark and possibly get other teams interested in their talents. The Cubs saw one prospect play for Team Great Britain, so let’s take a closer look at how he did in today’s game.
BJ Murray has a good first game for Team Great Britain in the 2026 World Baseball Classic

Murray may be a prospect for the Cubs, but he was Team Great Britain’s starting first baseman in their first pool play game against Team Mexico. He would bat cleanup for this game and go 1 for 3 with a walk in the game. His first at-bat would be his only hit of the day, as he recorded a single in the first inning off Cubs teammate Javier Assad, but that was the highlight of the day for Murray at the plate.
Murray spent 2025 in Double-A Knoxville and swung the bat well as he would post a .242/.363/.418 slash line with 20 home runs, 89 RBI, 62 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases on 28 tries. This is his second appearance in the World Baseball Classic, competing in the 2023 edition of the event. In the four games he played, Murray would go 3 for 13 (.231) with a pair of RBI and one run scored.
With the ability to swing the bat well and play both corner infield positions and could be in the majors in the next year or two. Whether it is to be the next third baseman after Alex Bregman or if it is to be a piece in a trade, the 15th-round pick in the 2021 draft is looking to turn heads here. It will be intriguing to see how he continues to perform as he looks to impress during this year’s World Baseball Classic.
