The Chicago Cubs and second baseman Nico Hoerner have recently agreed to a massive six-year contract extension, avoiding him from potentially heading to free agency after the season. Chicago has shown the ability to extend some young talent, with center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong also signing an extension since the regular season began. There was one big demand that Hoerner and his camp had for this contract, but what was it? Let’s take a closer look and discuss what it means for Hoerner and the Cubs going forward.
Nico Hoerner demanded a full no-trade clause in his contract extension with the Chicago Cubs

The Cubs had a press conference following their 6-3 home loss to the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon to announce Hoerner’s contract extension. During the press conference, the president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer made it known that there was one major demand that Hoerner had: a full no-trade clause. Hoyer mentioned how the deal was contingent on it as well.
The full no-trade clause means he will be with the Cubs through the 2032 season. The contract details have him making $12 million this season, $23 million in 2027 and 2028, and $20 million for the remaining four years of this deal. With Hoerner signed through his age-35 season, this locks up second base for Chicago for the foreseeable future.
Coming off a season where he received National League Most Valuable Player votes for the first time in his career, Hoerner is expected to be a force in the lineup and as a star-studded second baseman on the field. It will be intriguing to see how Hoerner plays heading into his 30s and if he will outplay his contract extension as one of the longest-tenured Cubs players in recent memory.
